Generally I don't care for the back formation of adding modern to historical. In this case I love it. Go figure me.
Yep, one of the rare cases for myself, as well. For me, it is the placement in respect to the proximity of the vastly different styles to each other that works in this case.
Although, it could also be argued, to a lesser degree IMO, that the glass walls of the conservatory in relation to the classic Dutch Gothic style of HM is of a similar nature, juxtapositionally.
