Ah. Our insurance policy is great. My parents didn't have to add me specifically because anyone living in your house is covered to drive the vehicles, so mine is technically not listed under me, but I'm still covered (covered me in full after my accident without an issue). Even if that changed it still wouldn't be horrible because they give good students a discount. My parents wanted me driving my senior year 1. so I could do after school stuff and my mom wouldn't have to pick me up and 2. because there was a good possibility I'd be commuting to school, and even if I lived on campus I would still need a car and they wanted me comfortable. They planned their car purchases years in advance so I would have one of the cars. They also switched the AAA policy from my dad to me, which is nice.

Here the learner's permit age is 15 and 9 months, your must keep the permit for 9 months, record 60 hours of driving time, 10 of which are at night, and take a Driver's Education course, which includes three sessions behind the wheel with an instructor (not counted towards your 60 hours). I got mine a little late, about 16 and 8 months old.

Someday it will be just DH and I again on insurance. Dreamland. We at one point had 5 cars for 4 drivers. We are now down to 4 cars, 4 drivers as DS still has his car on our policy. He is not dumb.

Both of my kids got new to them cars when they were Juniors in High School. So happy not to have to schlep them around by then. I wouldn't let my DS take his away to college. It is a personal thing but one bad choice and.....
DD if she asked I would have let her but she didn't care and the student parking lot was a mile from her dorm. The University has an elaborate bus system that stopped outside her door and you can get just about anywhere. If she wanted to get her car, she had to take a bus to get it, so what is the point. Think University did that on purpose, lol.

If I had gone out-of-state they would have given me the SUV and traded in my car. I need mine to get to religious meetings as well. Right now they help me out with gas and insurance since I essentially use my car to get to school and religious meetings and run errands for my mom. They'd rather have me save my money.

And, the innocence of this video is why I do not support co-ed schools as an educational concept from age early teens until 18.

College, sure. K-6, sure.

6 - 12, they need to be separated. It's better for society as a whole. Smarter women, smarter men.

Her school is all Girls K-Prep through 12. The flip side of the coin is down the street, All Boys Prep School.
They best be smart, I haven't been told lately but when she was in elementary school it was $25,000 + expenses + books + parent donations which are printed for all to see $$$ amount.

The girls were are in theory the most problematic in middle school, so in middle school they are in Uniforms. They have very strict rules for the non uniform years as to what is appropriate school clothes and shoes. They don't mess around.

I have a few years to go, but my plan is...

1) Kid working by age 13 - 14 part time (< 10 hours a week) doing SOMETHING, and filing taxes around the same age. The debate her mother and I have right now is WHAT will she be doing? Based on her interests this past year, we think she's going to go the lifeguard route. She recently passed her Level 3 Swimmers exam with the Red Cross classes she's in, and seems very interested in aquatics as a whole. But, she's 9...hard to tell at this age. At least working by 15, though I'd like to get her into something sooner if possible (again, I stress, part time and summer work)

2) Kid finances first car (at VERY reasonable "parental" terms with 0% APR, extensive warranty and "family" discount) and the first car is a stick shift (her mother and I both love manual transmissions, and think it's a good life skill to have) and not new, but decent and well maintained (Mommy and I will pump some money into it that she won't know about).

3) She is responsible for the gas / regular maintenance of the vehicle, and as part of the agreement, provides us proof that she is maintaining the vehicle. She is also responsible for a portion of the insurance for the vehicle paid monthly to us in check or she loses access to the vehicle outside of school or school related functions. (yep, I'll lojack that sucker if I have to)

My ex and I are seriously considering sending the kiddo off to an all girls school in 2 years when she hits middle school.

Frankly, public education isn't bad (you know this). K-6 is very well done, and in most places 10 - 12 is as well. It's 7 - 9 where I think we lose them.

Middle school is too much change, too soon, too fast. I'm basing this partially on general observation, but also personal experience.
