My daughter was having trouble with a math problem yesterday and when I tried to explain it to her a different way than she learned at school she actually said "we're not allowed to think about what the right answer would be we need to follow the rules and show the work". Not allowed to think???! Awesome teaching approach.

And that's the problem right there. The methods they are advocating discourage real thinking. There are better ways to get students to think than making them analyze 3 different ways to solve a problem. It has to be so frustrating for a kid to have to do that every time. And I can't imagine how they'll handle higher math when just doing the necessary arithmetic is an ordeal. I'm sure the system has good intentions, but I fear for the end results a few years down the road.

Just saying, but teachers have been going way past their hours for a VERY long time. It's nothing new. The new curriculum and new programs, etc just adds to the boatloads of work teachers already have.
