What's Still On and What's Now Off

Well folks, it's been a good 10 year run. And just like the last good 10 year run (85-95) ended due to DLP's financial woes, expect many years of wilderness for us fans to wander in before good times come again.

Let's see... from Indy in '95 to RotR in '19... I guess that means we can expect the next level in E-ticket attractions to premier in 2043!

Brethren, adieu!

I do wish that things had gone ahead. A lot of people think it was not a theme that would be popular, but I just really wish that I could have seen what the resort would have been besides the couple of pieces of concept art.

Oh it would have been fun. I’ve stayed at pop century more than any other resort. It’s cheap and very good location for transportation.

Since Walt was born in 1901, you could celebrate the early days of Walt’s life in 1900 and 1910 and then start with the Disney studios in 1920. Would have been fun.

Well... the joke was the Legendary Years theme being applied to the Starcruiser's immersive experience. :hilarious:

You have to remember, a lot of fans hate that Disney owns Star Wars. They have no excitement for a hotel that they'll likely never stay or have a desire to. I thought the idea was really cool and I hope they go back to it. It will print money despite what some may think. Hotels and restaurants are priorities to WDW. But it's not likely to be at the top of their list, but none of us knows for sure what they're doing. Last I checked we were all just speculating and have heard rumblings, but who knows??

It also isn't a multiple tower resort like the Legendary Years were. It's one building, so it's a different scenario. But it's the inside that is no doubt expensive.

Hotels will be one of the first things they circle back to. But I have no doubt they'd like to fill up the ones they already have right now. We just don't know how travel will be impacted yet.

I would have liked to see the full Pop!...it’s always been a sticking point for me personally.

But I can’t say a throwback, historical property to the first half of the 20th century would resonate the way it would have needed too.

That idea very much was indicative of the Eisner personality/mentality.

It’s actually been an extend run without a recession in modern history...where big time Bobby jacked the prices to the point where the “fallback” defense of being to supplement with promotions has been weakened to the point it may not work.

Now we get to see the results of his grand social experiment.

I can see the Speedway "re-do" (really ... I kinda expected it to be cut anyway) being off the table. No upgrades to attractions. We'll never get the Big Thunder explosion, etc.

Easy things possibly budgeted for ...

I also think the Avengers E-ticket is DOA for Anaheim and Hong Kong.

Now of course they could always re-visit projects in a year or two but who knows?

"Good enough" has been their mantra more times than not. Remember that everyone.

While it's a WDW forum of course, anyone else think Paris' parks will suffer too? I'm guessing no Runaway Railway for them, at least for a while. Star Wars "land". I can see FROZEN and the new lake continuing and other things. They kinda have to finish Avengers Campus, right? Spider-Man Mania and the coaster overlay kinda have to be done. But who knows?
I think the avenger ride in Anaheim is more important than we realize...as is making Hong king more viable.
I know folks like the smelly Speedway, and I get it, but they could better utilize that space. Move the cars to EPCOT, do a better job theming the track, and it adds another attraction there. Not hard to create a track and move the cars. But they won't, lol. Just a thought.

TRON isn't a strong IP, but it has a cult fanbase. And it's a coaster, so it will be a hit. I mean, a coaster starring Aerosmith still draws in guests (I like it, but just saying ...). I can see why Penguin would suggest they continue that and do something like TRON Racers. Would be better than the cars getting a paint job (my guess on the "upgrade"). Wouldn't want them to invest in electric cars ...
Lightcycle will be incredibly well recieved

As far as speedway goes...I was really hoping/pulling for them to eliminate it as part of the tron construction or a larger New Tomorrowland refresh...but no such luck.

I don’t even know why they bother with the cars catering anymore...it’s not that mentality/nostalgia is gonna grow moving forward

AKA, a no-brainer and what should've been done in the first place (preferably about 10 years ago).

Honestly, looking at this situation purely from an EPCOT overhaul perspective, this work stoppage isn't the worst thing in my mind since 70-80% of the announced projects landed somewhere between "meh" and "blegh." Moana playground, table on legs, Poppins in UK, Play Pavilion, Harmonius... really wouldn't shed a tear for any of them based on what we knew about each. Even the proposed SSE overhaul, while certainly needed, always left me feeling uneasy because I just don't trust current leadership to update it properly.

I have no problem waiting longer, if only because it gives Disney second chance to create a final product more befitting EPCOT rather than IPCOT (no guarantee, I admit).
They could always put a carousel, M&G’s and a couple of flat, spinner rides where Innoventions West was located.

That wouldn’t happen. But I could see a vastly scaled down and simplified centre of the park to get guest flow up and walls down. Could even be a good thing depending how you see it.

Eh. Not sure why trees are a bad thing where the old fountain was? What was it really going to be? lol

I mean, I wish they hadn't demoed the fountain. But here we are. Open concrete isn't appealing, there's way too much of it in certain spots and especially with the wider walkways now. JMO, of course. You know more about this project than I or most do.

Same on the Speedway. I have no attachment. Just think it would fit well with Test Track.

And I was kinda hesitant to think about the Avengers e-ticket being DOA but it's likely very expensive. That's my sticking point. I do agree about Hong Kong and it's more likely to be built there. Anaheim was still years away from what I remember. Considering they have to finish the Spider-Man attraction and the Avengers Campus stuff, I can see it being heavily delayed and them not going back to it but ... who knows? Hong Kong needs it more but then they might as well just build two at the same time. So again ... this is one I'll be watching. Very curious about it's future.

Off topic alert!

Wasn't the theme of the 1920's area of the Legendary Years rumored to be Monopoly?

Back to what's on and what's off now... :)

Well they could throw up some kind of shade structure over a weekend and do it on the cheap.....

Like what they already had? Or a real shade structure?

Not towards you, but they just literally can't abandon everything. And it's not like they can't plant trees and carve out some paths. I think many have gone to "worst case scenario". I'm expecting the worst, sure, but common sense says they can't abandon everything.

They seemed to think what they had was fine.......

I vote for get rid of star wars hotel. Apply that money to other areas.
This makes the most sense considering tourism is going to be down overall, they won't need the extra room capacity (not that it added much anyways....). They certainly are going to have an interesting time trying to compete with other hospitality groups who will have no fear of price drops to fill rooms. Disney may actually have to consider steep discounts for a while as the economy recovers.

I agree, I suspect the Star Wars Hotel will sit as an incomplete frame like the Legacy Years buildings after 9/11.

Think about what the Star Wars Hotel was to be; a cruise ship on land! Psychologically the absolute worst environment to be in our post Corona world. Folks will be simply too scared.

I don’t even think that crosses anyone’s mind (“cruise ship on land”) as being an issue. The issue is $3K for two nights was difficult to swallow BEFORE this pandemic. Now it’s downright not happening.

Everyone is forgetting that the Star Wars Hotel is an experience, not just a bed and shower. It’s going to print money for them...no way they are going to stop.
