What's Still On and What's Now Off

...I imagine there won't be walls, but there will be a fairly large area with flower beds, patches of grass and a non-functional fountain. Which I would consider to be a shambles (at those prices)...
They'll clean up demo sites like Innoventions as much as possible and put down flower beds and sod to dress it up. No leaving debris in piles, construction equipment will be removed by the contractors and other materials put away, etc. It'll still be "empty space" but it won't look like a war zone.

How much of the underground "Utilidoor" structure do you think still remains? As I recall most of the infrastructure is in there.
In the pictures, it looks like everything is still there. I believe they were going to link it to the "Wonder Table" since they would have to get stuff into it somehow from backstage.

The entire tunnel is still there. Drill some holes, pour footers, toss up a convention center (CC building), done. I know there's more to it then that but the CC buildings are extremely modular and simple. There isn't much to them.

I actually had a weird concept in my head of a shortened West with a smaller table structure integrated in a tasteful manner a few months ago.

The barricaded off areas on the slab also match up with locations of elevators and service stairwells into the utilidoor. So then yes it appears to still be intact.

Makes sense to keep it honestly. It's just going to be covered in a different way (landscaping/small hills) and won't be seen by guests. The work is done to fit elevators back into it too.

To people that would know, was the plan to ditch the West tunnel completely or just attach it to the new structure? Seems like (another) poor move to ditch it for the reasons mentioned.

I never said masks alone. Masks are 1 of a long list of measures that are part of the next phase. Temperature checks. Disinfecting. Closing theater attractions.

I’d recommend this detailed analysis of the next phase in general, in which masks are but 1 piece:

and yes, over 2-3 months, not really an issue to ramp up production if $0.50 masks.
Disney clothing suppliers can stop churning out t-shirts and do masks instead.
The current mask shortage is very temporary.

Go read the article I posted. It is a large issue. You don't make sufficient masks out of clothes. You need special machines to create special material if you want them to properly protect.

I'll laugh if they end up rebuilding or building something similar to the original CC West building again. They could stick a bar on top, make it a "green roof", and call it a day. I wouldn't complain at all honestly.

AKA, a no-brainer and what should've been done in the first place (preferably about 10 years ago).

Honestly, looking at this situation purely from an EPCOT overhaul perspective, this work stoppage isn't the worst thing in my mind since 70-80% of the announced projects landed somewhere between "meh" and "blegh." Moana playground, table on legs, Poppins in UK, Play Pavilion, Harmonius... really wouldn't shed a tear for any of them based on what we knew about each. Even the proposed SSE overhaul, while certainly needed, always left me feeling uneasy because I just don't trust current leadership to update it properly.

I have no problem waiting longer, if only because it gives Disney second chance to create a final product more befitting EPCOT rather than IPCOT (no guarantee, I admit).

What’s the 120 second coaster? Guardians??

As for the new nighttime show, there’s no way that will still happen this year right? Especially if the parks do not open until June ish.

Our Insider has said they'll likely go ahead with HUS, even if delayed a bit because:
1. mostly done
2. EF not that popular and restaurants want a better draw for their dine & VIP-watch deals.

I don't expect the Star Wars hotel to be half-baked, just significantly delayed.
Similar to when Pop Century got delayed and eventually became Art of Animation, that was probably actually more-baked than Pop, AoA was an improvement on the original plan.
I expect the Star Wars hotel will open as planned, but just 3-5 years late.

The difference is a lot of the Star Wars plans revolve around not just being a place to sleep and shower and maybe pool as a value resort. Star wars relying heavily on entertainment teams, and those are often the first thing scrapped.

read the articles I posted. All masks protect — not the wearer, they protect from the transmitter.

It’s all about factors that reduce R, the reproduction rate.
coronavirus has had an R of slightly over 2.
If a perfect N95 mask reduces R from 2 to 0.1 great. But even if an imperfect mask reduces R from 2 to 1.7... great!

It ultimately will take a combination of strategies to reduce R to a level where you can have sustainable function. No single strategy or technology will reduce it to zero.... at least until we get a vaccine.

The whole goal is combined strategies that reduce R. All masks are effective at reducing transmission. Thus, if asymptomatic carriers are wearing masks... their personal R is greatly reduced.
Masks prevent super spreaders like Typhoid Mary (her personal R was estimated at 50).

Cancelling or postponing the Star Wars Hotel makes sense as it's peripheral, unrelated to anything else and invisible from the rest of the property.

But leaving the Epcot spine as essentially a vacant lot? Every visitor to Epcot will have to either traverse or skirt around the area.

It's almost like Disney is putting itself up for sale with a big sign in the middle of Future World that says, "Build to Suit".

It seems that a minimalized re-opening would be:

EPCOT

Front:
  • New entrance infrastructure finished (although, if there was any plan to re-do the bus area, that's sure to be gone).
  • Landscaping done (although, given recent history with fountains, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a planter for a while)

Spine:
  • The SE quadrant of demolished Innoventions can get a temporary building over the elevator stairs for access to the tunnel. They can landscape the open area nicely and put some various booths around (hello, beer garden!).
  • The Festival building (three tiered mushroom) will be on hold.. or eventually canceled or remade into something else.
  • Dreamer's point, wishing tree, spine entertainers on hold
  • The NE quadrant can continue to be gutted and sit there quietly like it has been for years mostly unused. They could at least use it for storage.
  • The Journey of Water will be just a landscaped side path to The Sea. Indefinitely delayed.
  • The Western quadrants of Innoventions will continue to become the new merch store and new TS/QS restaurant because they bring in extra money.

Pavilions:
  • Space 220, GotG, and Ratatouille will be completed because of extra profit and attendance boost.
  • I could see PLAY! would be on indefinite delay because it doesn't bring in extra money nor an attendance boost
  • SSE refresh: delayed for a year or so probably
  • Poppins, Coco, and anything to do with Imagination Pavilion including Figment pushed off for at least five years: basically, no new projects
  • Odyssey gets Epcot Expo removed and reverted back to a Festival spot
  • Wondrous China? Martin thinks maybe so if they were able to finish all the filming

Other:
  • Starbucks stays in its new 'temporary' location as well as all other merchant spots that were moved out (Art of Disney, Pin Trader).
  • Club Cool? In Odyssey? A new temp building?
  • HUS timeline delayed, but needed since EF isn't the draw they hoped it would be

MK
  • MK - GF walkway on hold (though bridge is likely to be finished I would think)
  • Reflections DVC/Resort on hold
  • SGE replacement on hold
  • TRON Cycle finished
  • TRON Racers (Speedway overlay) on hold
  • Castle repaint finished
  • no new electric light parade
  • 50th Anniversary celebrations? Likely bare minimum: banners and logos.

ELSEWHERE
  • All other front of park projects finished.
  • Star Wars Resort on hold
  • "Black Box" attraction in DHS on hold
  • basically: no new projects

Well, if USO has to forestall their third gate and put their plans into the existing two... I have an idea for them:

1. In Studios, give up:
a. New York theming
b. San Fran theming
c. MiB
d. F&F
2. Turn that whole side of Studios into London (UK)
a. F&F becomes the new Dracula/Frankenstein ride
b. Mummy stays as is
c. the rest of the environs has Phantom of the Opera, Invisible Man, Creature, and the rest of the UCM repertoire as various attractions (shops, shows, food service)
d. upshot: HHN and the UCM are in the same park!
e. 2nd upshot: the embarrassment of F&F is gone!
3. Fantastic Beasts (or any other Potter extension) replaces MiB
a. You get a seamless London theme going from the UCM gift show all the way to where MiB used to be.

Dangit that sounds good, but as mentioned previously, MIB is hugely beloved. At least, I've heard it highly praised. I wonder if MIB International allows for a London-based facade for the existing ride. It looks from maps and images that there's a lot of empty space to play with around MIB, but I don't know if there's backstage stuff there that can't be messed with.

Instead, I'd say put Fantastic Beasts into New York, given the first film's setting. Save for the Fallon building, I don't know how much of it wouldn't pass for early 20th Century. Absorb some of, if not all of the Production Central into New York and retheme the Rip Ride Rocket to one of the Beasts. Retheme the Hollywood Bowl-style area to a Central Park. Are the Blue Man Group still in the old Nickelodeon Studios? Even if there is, there must be space there for a new Potter E-Ticket.

Which makes no sense, much like many from all these "new members".

As an older member, I'd like to throw in not hating that they're taking the higher route and not saying that the worker's health doesn't matter.

...hey won’t want to be near each other...providing the 19th hole is shut down.

Too cranky 😉

Spent a week having my sports radio show decry why we can't at least play The Valero if everyone doesn't pull their balls out of the cup.

And anyone who has played football knows if you play to protect the lead you will end up losing. Prevent defense will prevent you from winning.

Playing it safe and running the ball is a coward's way. Best throw the ball on the goal line.

... and relying on one AoA indicator for MCAS input without a standard data mismatch indicator in the PFD or MFD.

I have... no idea... what any of that means.

You need a better imagination. Virtual queues dont have to use ROTR as the model. Can let guests book them in advance like FP... or done at resort for resort guests. Or lots of other methods so you can do it, with guests spread out.

For quite a few years now, Dumbo has been working off of a non-standard queue model. It can work. Why can't Magic Bands be scanned into a system that essentially works like taking a ticket at the Deli?

Again, the mask can fall off and considering Disney couldn't get smokers to stay in designated smoking areas, to think guests will follow the strict rules is more than hopeful, especially considering the type of people that would be willing to rush to an amusement park during all this.

But... it hooks around the ears/back of the head (depending on the model). How on Earth can that fall off?

A correctly fitted useful mask is painful to wear all day.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but as an asthmatic with glasses (Jeez, I sound like a stereotypical need) I can't take wearing a mask. I usually forgo a protective one when doing work because I feel like I can't breathe and any time I exhale it blows right out the top and fogs things up so bad I can't see. Anyone else have problems like this?

Come on Bobby! This is the PERFECT TIME TO GET THIS STUFF DONE! There are safe ways for the contractors to work! Home builders are still working! Or is the silly unions forcing the stoppage?

Silly unions, trying to protect the work force.

My hope is that the beer tower as I call it (fancy festival tower) will get axed. Seems like a complete waste of money then and especially now.

They want the space. I'd rather the space be its own seperate space that's centrally located rather than taking up a pavilion and blocking off attractions.

  • TRON Racers (Speedway overlay) on hold

Is that a confirmed thing? I've only heard conjecture on it being a good idea.

true. It’s a proposal of many groups. Including the direction it appears the CDC is going. There is not unanimous agreement, certainly.
