To the average park guest, it's about so much more.

Yes, it is.

And that's why it is so incredibly disappointing that Disney keeps charging more and offering largely the same stale, poorly maintained entertainment year after year.

And you don't have to be a Disney online 'critic' to realize that. What if you visited in say spring of 2008 and then stayed away until this past spring. In FOUR years, exactly what new product of any substance would you have to experience?

No, it doesn't always have to be new E-Tickets, but when you have FOUR theme parks that together comprise the world's top theme park complex, you would think that something could be added each year at maybe one of them. And maybe an E-Ticket every 4-5 years at one of them ...

You are quite right it is about so much more.

I think Disney was ready to tell the world what was going to happen at Hollywood Studios and it was going to be that Cars Land was coming to Florida Than Star Wars was purchase happened and everything went back to square one. I understand that there have been additional Star War attractions than Disney wanted and Lucas did not approve. I think that everything is being look at one more time.

I have absolutely no emotional attachment whatsoever to either the Simpsons or Beauty and the Beast (or any Disney animated feature, for that matter...)

Doesn't matter.
A well done land is a well done land. Emotion need not factor into it.

Could not disagree more. You're telling me that if Harry Potter land was just about some generic wizards and not the franchise that everyone fell in love with, it would be just as well?

yes. You do realize that the majority of Disneyland was just "generic" lands and it became the most famous theme park in history? Most of Tokyo Disneysea is "generic" as well and everyone raves about that.

My point was that continuing to increase the cost of the AP and cut offerings is going to result in less usage. I can certainly anticipate in the coming years not getting a Disney World AP and getting a Disneyland seasonal AP, or heaven forbid, only length of stay passes.

Yes, I buy merchandise, but even that's been homogenized to a point where much of it is less desireable (he says wearing a very subtle Disney World zip up sweatshirt).

It is ridiculous how much they have jacked up the wdw APs. We did not renew this year however we still have our UNI APs that have barely gone up and you get to renew them at a significicant discount esp if you have been a long time pass holder. Also they give offer you a lot of discounts.

That's a good point. I still have a very hard time seeing how a Simpsonsland is going to translate into anything that I'd ever care to step foot it, but I see the point now.

If Avland was going to happen and this press event was really about announceing the project wouldnt hey have marched Mr Cameron out there and had a REAL release....instead of dusting off the old concept drawing? "Around the world" would lead one to think this event was going to be about WDW....but it wasnt, it was really about.....well nothing. Carsland has been opened for how long? Everyone knew it has been doing well, dont need a press confrence to tell us that. What exactly was the point? I dont even see it being advantagious to the mommy bloggers.... What they told us about Avland is basically its still a rumor.IIts still in its early stages? really? 2017 - 2018 ? 74 I think your are being optomistic there. We are on the eve of 2013. By the time they get out of the early stage it will be 2014....its taking almost five years to build FL....God only knows how long it will take to get to construction faze much less finish. Then if we go by history and they have staged openings....maybe 2020. Thats six years. Not so far fetched...huh?

This so called press event has been a disaster from the get go, Uni must be laughing thier collective butts off. A dusty renedering of Avland and telling us how great Fl is.....all Uni has to do is point to all the construction going on and call it a day.

Ok, I know it may just be me, but I don't understand the appeal of Cars Land. We had to get to the park when it opened, to wait in line at another location for 30 minutes to get the Fast Pass, for a ride with a return time of like 3:50. Come back to the park at 4:00 and wait in the Fast Pass line for another 40 minutes or so, in the hot sun, to ride a ride that seemed very similar to Test Track. Why does DHS need a Test Track? Overall the themeing was great, but the thought of spending that amount of money again on something WDW already has seems pretty crazy. I enjoyed Crush's Coaster ride in Paris more!
If given the choice, I too would bring Crush to DHS instead of Cars Land or RSR. :lookaround:

Yes, you can develop a great land without a franchise, but I think the franchise can be a big hook to get people there especially in the early years of operation. As td1129 said, there is no way WWoHP would have been as popular if it was just a generic wizard theme.

You can develop a theme park ride or area with a well known property, that is what gets people to come check it out and spend initially because they are familiar with it. You can develop a great theme park attraction or great area without a property already well known tied into it, and have the masses check it out, more importantly talk about it to have others check it out, and return to spend more money. This is what Magic Kingdom's greatest classics did. Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain will all great on their own merits.

When you have both combined, you have The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and that is going to be insanely popular on both examples for a long time.

So to review what happened at the "What's Next" presentation that was retitled to "Around The World";

  1. They reviewed everything that has just opened this week in New Fantasyland
  2. They showed some additional concept art for Seven Dwarves Mine Train opening in 2014
  3. They briefly mentioned Avatarland and showed a very vague photo of a very vague model of green Styrofoam. No opening date was mentioned.
  4. They summarized the other minor projects happening at WDW, the biggest of which was the new Splitsville bowling alley at Downtown Disney
No announcement of Cars Land coming to WDW was made at all, and no new parades, attractions or major entertainment were announced for any of the other WDW parks. Now gather your personal belongings and please exit to your left.

That was it, right?

Heading for the great escape.
Serious question, why is it any different the Gaston's Tavern? For people who enjoy and have a connection to the Simpsons (and there are a lot of them) getting to go to a re-creation of Moe's tavern is just as exciting as a BatB fan getting to go to Gaston's Tavern.

But its just not magical, nor more importantly, for the ubber fhan dans, Disney made.

Sorry I'm late to the thread but I have 2 things to (hopefully) contribute.

1) The announcement name change could go either of 2 ways. In previous years, they've used the "What's New, What's Next" name to announce that a planter was being added to the entry plaza of one of the parks and little else. TDO realizes this and could go either way; there are massive announcements (Cars/Avatar/etc.) or even less and they had to change the name. We'll see tomorrow.

2) As a member of the military, I'm very restricted to any west coast based cruises due to the drug wars in Mexico; it's one of the world's most dangerous countries. If I took a west coast cruise on any line, I and my colleagues in uniform would have to remain on the ship in most Mexican ports and virtually all of them on the west coast. I don't have a problem with DCL leaving California if it was for that reason.

Thank you for your service. I agree taking a ship or any trip to Mexico right now is not on my wish list. We have friends that were taken hstage there, and it is more common than it seems is being reported. The violence is astounding. I do not blame them if DCL is avoiding it at the moment. Also, I got about 1000 notices for discounts on cruises from Galveston all this year, I wonder if they were selling well enough? (we live in nj, not tx, I would never want to spend the money on flight plus a cruise)

Neither have reached the cultural impact of the Simpsons, nor have either reached the highbrow level of humor the Simpsons was famous for in its heyday. You're comparing apples to oranges.
not to mention, both southpark and family guy have had episodes dedicated to the simpsons. Remember "Simpsons did it"?

Beauty and the Beast will always have a special place in my heart. It is the first Disney animated movie I ever watched, and it is my favourite Disney animated musical of all time. But I also have been a fan of The Simpsons since I was a kid, and I am extremely excited about entering a heavily-themed mini Springfield land. I don't even drink alcohol, and I can't wait to step inside Moe's. Also, my little sister (11 years old) loves the Simpsons and is just as excited about this mini-land as I am. True, the show is a comedy and a satire, but that does not mean viewers do not have an emotional attachment to the show. Hell, I even shed a tear while watching a certain scene in the movie.

Go ahead, admit it, it was the spider pig scene wasn't it?

And not trying to be rude but let's not compare a smaller project venture for Universal to freshen things up with a bonus themed Simpsons Resturant/enhanced theming of an area, in the same park that is getting three new E-tickets within the next three years and many smaller attractions(some housed in an entirely new land) to MK's(the highest money making theme park in the world) one new quick service location that was the first of any activity in that park for YEARS.

Also, ultimately Moe and Krusty Burger may have more basis for a themed food/beverage set. There are fictious drink and food companies and brews in the TV series. It is nice that Disney made one up and all and I think Gaston's Tavern is a rightful place to be represented in the village setting but it does not exactly drag people to buy into it like Butterbeer or Duff.

I've already posted this in another thread, but isn't it amazing that FLE2012 (so, not including the Mine Train Coaster) gets you just about the same as Universal 2013 (Simpsons+Transformers), but Universal is taking less than 1 year, and costs a lot cheaper?

Little Mermaid = Transformers
Dumbo Spinner = Kang/Kodos Spinner
Be Our Guest = Simpsons Fast Food District Restaurants (Krusty Burger, Kentucky Fried Panda, etc.

Only difference is that BoG is sometimes a sit down restaurant!

And, if you include Mine Train Coaster, then you compare to London/Gringotts/Hogwarts Express

Not to mention everything that has opened prior at both Universal parks the past five years. Compared to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, since we should use their two most money making parks as a comparison example...not much. (let's even throw them Nemo)

It is the facts that are sad.
