What Should Disney do About Vaping?

For what it's worth, the limiting of vaping to designated smoking locations wasn't put in place for general health reasons, it was done for perception reasons. When someone is vaping, regardless of the health effects, it looks as though they are smoking, especially to the most impressionable demographic, children. Much in the same way Disney made a commitment to keep smoking out of their films, this was a way to keep the practice limited to areas off the beaten path. I for one would love to see smoking banned from the parks, but I can settle for the limited designated areas, as they are usually easy to avoid.

As many have pointed out, drinking is just as destructive, but there is a fundamental difference. The difference is, once the act of drinking causes someone to potentially endanger other guests, they would be kindly escorted off the premises by OCSD. The very act of smoking inherently puts other Guests as risk, yet it is allowed to continue. For that reason, I think Dismey is well justified in limiting the locations, and smokers should consider themselves fortunate to have those. No one needs to smoke to survive, it is a choice. Cars are big polluters as well, but especially in the US, they are a necessary evil. Those who choose to smoke outside designated areas, and per the park rules, this includes vapers, are breaking Disney's written policies, and should stop immediately. I don't accept excuses about there not being enough areas, it is the rule, the locations are what is provided on private property, and that should be the end of it. Everyone has the right to smoke, but they do not have the right in the Disney theme parks to do so wherever they wish. Since vaping is essentially a neutered form of smoking, it too is rightfully held to the same standard, and the rules pertaining to it should be likewise respected.

I'm a former smoker. Three packs a day. I vape now, and I vape at Disney world. I don't have a big cloud blower I carry around. And I don't do it in open public...not because I care about anyone's opinion, but because there are kids around. If you see me at Disney, you will never see vapor emit from me. I hold it in. I grew up wanting to smoke because of watching family do it...I wouldn't want any child to think that smoking or anything like it is cool. But I will say, I don't care what you think about how I look...people look ridiculous vaping??? Judging people on what they do is pretty childish...

It should be only allowed outside the view of kids, and not bother someone else. As with smoking.

I have to say this here.... Regardless of the vaping issue, what you do, or how I feel about vaping (everyone here knows my thoughts on the subject) that statement from you is downright silly. That is exactly how you judge someone. You judge a person based on their actions. If a person commits murder, they are a murderer. If they steal, they are a thief. If they make you laugh, they are funny. A person's actions are precisely on which you base judgement. If you want to make a valid argument then you should have some basis in reality.

Very well said, it would be nice if all vapers, and smokers saw it this way

Basis in reality? My reality is it's childish to view ALL vapers the way you do when there are rule following people, like me, who also share the need for people vape or smoke to do it in designated areas and not around children...
I also wasn't making an argument, I was giving my opinion.
Get a grip, even being a vaper, I'm on the same side of the fence as you.

I agree people vaping should stay in the smoking areas, it's no one's business to judge someone for why they may be doing it, ...no one here is offended if their kids see people drunk out of their minds in Epcot?

Then say it like that. Your comment was made as a general statement regardless of what you "meant". I just found the idea that you think judging people based on their actions as childish to be pretty ridiculous. That is exactly how society judges people. Their actions.

If you were speaking on vaping only then your comment should have read as "Judging people on vaping is pretty childish..."

Ummm, I am. Not much I can do about it as there are no "drunk spots" in WDW where they can all be corralled together, but it does bother me on the few occasions we do see it. Drinking responsibly is not that hard. Also, I am not getting kidney disease if someone walks by me drinking. :D

I understand that, and I will try to remember that...as this thread was about vaping I figured it was implied I was talking about vaping, and that's all. As someone who is usually judged by my past actions and not by my current, I usually don't tread lightly. I apologize man.

Electronic cigarette juice is made up of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine(if you choose to use nicotine) and natural flavourings(assuming it's a reputable company). It's not water vapour. From what research has been done so far it may not be completely harmless BUT it has significantly less chemicals then the stinky counterpart. There hasn't been enough research done yet to have a concrete argument that it is in fact bad for you.

As obnoxious as the "cloud chasers" may be, I would MUCH prefer people walking around blowing clouds that smell like cotton candy, mangos and fruit punch instead of second hand cigarette smoke.

I would say make them vape in the smoking area but that defeats the purpose of them trying to get away from cigarettes by subjecting them to second hand smoke while they consume their "healthy alternative"...

But, as it's what the private company who owns the land has asked, as a vaper, we should follow their rules

I remember the first time I saw someone 'vaping' ....it was only a few months ago, outside of a local shopping mall.
I saw this guy seemingly taking hits off of a square shaped gadget in his hand and puff out a huge cloud of 'smoke'.
The impression I was left with was here's someone just looking for attention.
He did all the 'hey, look at me' poses and made sure to really accentuate the 'big puff'.
Not knowing what I was seeing, I thought to myself it was actually smoke like a cigar or cig would give off.
So assuming that, I remember thinking at the time it was pretty inconsiderate of this guy to be blowing all this 'smoke' around in a area where a lot of people and their kids were standing close by.

This Summer I got a crash course on what this apparent new fad is all about when I visited a popular local beach and noticed all the 'vaping' shops on the scene.
I put two and two together and remembered the guy I saw outside of the mall...and finally understood what this was all about.
Seeing all the signage and products on display sure helped clue me in as well.

Last week, I learned two co-workers have taken up 'vaping' ...and do it right in the building when on their breaks.
One does it to try to help her quit smoking cigarettes, the other 'vapes' a flavored puff to help her break her candy addiction.

So after having said all that, I would have to say that if people want to do it in a public place, particularly a family orientated Theme Park like WDW, it would seem the smoking areas already designated would be the best option.
I think too many newcomers seeing it would assume as I did when I first saw It that its just a fancy way to smoke a cigarette.
Even if users feel it's harmless, the general perception from a visual standpoint from someone not in the know is it's 'smoking".

Definitely agree with the visual aspect of vaping. It's too difficult to distinguish the difference between the two which is not a good thing. Smoking area does seem like the best option, unless there is a dedicated "vaping" area. Maybe they can put it in the new SWL and brand it as "Cloud City" :p

I'm not pro or con 'vaping'....just sharing my observations.
If it helps people quit smoking for real, or provides them with some pleasure, more power to them.
However, when it's brought into a public space where not everyone may understand what it 'is' exactly, that might be a issue for some.
Most would likely assume as I first did that it's another form of smoking.

If I had not been educated before learning of my co-workers taking up 'vaping' recently, I would have been stunned to see them puffing away in the back room of our workspace.
I'm not a smoker, and I'm not keen on the smell of the smoke, but have no personal issues with 'vaping' thus far.
Just seems like yet another seemingly harmless trend.
If people want to do it, let them......just be mindful of those not in the know around you.

I've never seen cloud chasers at the world. Usually just the guys with the pin vaporizer around there necks. I used to carry rigs that would produce massive clouds, but they quickly verge on the price of smoking cigarettes, something I was trying to get away from when I started vaping. I haven't been to MK in almost a year (december 2013), but would have no problem talking to someone chucking clouds right on main street usa...at all.

Actually, quite a bit is known about vaping. The CDC, FDA and several other public health studies (independent of the industry) have been done.

Except in the published findings from the World Health Organization. ;)
Both true, but what hasn't been done are the studies on the long term effects of vaping for both the vaper and the second hand people. That's because they haven't been around long enough to have sufficient data. We do know that the aerosol vaper emitted by the vaper does contain some toxic elements though less than smoking but we don't know what exposure to those levels over extended periods does.

Seems appropriate to not expose people to second hand vapours until the data is in and we know whether it's safe to have long term second hand exposure.

And what is so horrible that this report revealed?
Have you read it yourself?

Because these were the main take aways-
1) The biggest health risk currently is Nicotine overdose
2) There is no longterm study yet that has linked vaping to issues such as cancer. However, looking at the individual ingredients some can contain carcagenic elements, BUT the vaping delivery system dramatically cuts the amount imparted by the traditional burning method.
3) Vapers themselves risk eye and lung irritaion.
4) The second hand vapor, although not harmless, produces less toxicity than ciggarettes.

The actual recommendations fron the WHO in regards to public vaping? Don't do it indoors.
