What if this thing fails?

The biggest issue you have with price is it might cut out it becoming fond in peoples hearts like it is ours (as a previous poster mentioned). Due to people not getting to go as much if never. Also wonderful world of disney no longer being a thing with limited channels hurts (if youre over 40 im guessing, at one point you had like 5 channels, and disney was on weekly pushing the magic). Disney has to get them young. What you would see is no new rides, or super cheap no theming, cost cuts, and areas of the parks ting down and nor reopening. Basically what you are seeing partly now except thats greed, and we are still getting new things.. and its super crowded. When crowds are nom existant is when youll se price drops. This will never happen though. Because before it can both domestic parks will be destroyed. One by water and one by either earthquake or fire.

Well, I just know people that I know that used to go every 2 years now are waiting 5. But your right attendance is still up, and ya know what maybe Disney should not be something the average family goes to every year. When we were kids it was a luxury and we went every 6 years or so.
After reading this, and remembering how we only went like once every 3 years for ONLY two days (not quoting father from CoP here), that does beg the question:

Is Disney trying to weed out the *cough* lower payers to get the high(er) rollers?

Harsh I know, but Disney is a business and from what it looks like they are trying to bring in more money at a higher rate...? I could be totally wrong on that but that is what I am starting to see.

Nope you are right. People complain its to crowded. So time to weed out middle class and below. Maybe even middle upper.

But at the same time, what if that doesn't play in Disney's favor and they start "failing" in certain areas, especially in the parks?
Until there is real competition there will always be replacements. I wonder how all the tour group things work (like pricing). Universal scared disney and is why we are getting new stuff. But following harry potter with kong fallon and f and f, i think made them calm down. The third park if done right will hopefully scare them again. But the issue is... universal isnt disney. The princesses, mickey minnie. Universal cant compete with that under 10 age. You can argue minions but its not the same.

I'm seeing a day, maybe a year after Star Wars opens that many people just say "enough is enough", it's not worth it anymore. Either the crowds or the prices will be too much to take.

I don't see WDW fail or fall anytime soon. ;)

On the contrary. Naturally WDW will/has already fall(en) as an interesting creative endeavour. But there is an enormous market for a central US hub for selfies, boozing, shopping and celeb character experiences.

I think we have a better shot of some psycho country hitting us with a bomb before WDW is gone in my lifetime...(i'm 54). I feel comfortable that the physical me will be worm food before WDW is gone. Life's too short to stress on the what if's...

So much depends on Star Wars, IMO. If the WDW attractions are popular, if the movies continue to be popular.

If both end up being flops, then WDW could have some issues.
WDW would ride the popularity of their classics for awhile, but popularity can be fickle, especially where vacations are concerned.

Just take weather as a factor. If FL was hit with enough bad weather, people might question the safety of traveling there.

But WDW also has a major abilities to attract folks via discounts.

It has already been planned for. if everything fails there will be major price increases, new up-charge events, and significant cutbacks.

On the other hand, if things are a smashing success, there will be major price increases, new up-charge events, and significant cutbacks.

If the theme parks survived 9/11, they can survive anything.. That said, if at any time, the TWDC thinks its IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THEIR SHAREHOLDERS that the TWDC sell off the theme park division and simply license the characters, they would do it in a heart beat!

Its never about whats best for the theme parks or the theme park guests..
dont give them that idea...

If it fails? Speaking about the entire company?

More than likely some sort of larger company or investment firm will buy the licensing rights and everything else that makes Disney "Disney". Chances are this investment vehicle would even buy the name "The Walt Disney Company" and operate as so because of the brand power. Honestly after a few generations people wouldn't even know that it's not the "real" Disney anymore.

The parks are such a cash cow that I don't see any way that it would entirely fail and be shut down. Definitely cutbacks and reduction of property or some other sort of downsizing could happen, but if Disney couldn't find a way to operate the parks profitably another company would surely inject capital into the parks for a slice of the pie buying another 10+ years.

The only thing I could see that eviscerates Disney as a company would be a combination of events...

1. Disney's IP falls into the public domain and other companies create much better content with it. This is incredibly challenging and not as easy as just "Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, let's make a Mickey film". We're talking about massive amounts of IP falling into the public domain, but Disney continues to buy new IP which just draws this out even longer. This is what would render the DISNEY brand name useless.

2. Live sports become irrelevant. People just stop watching which would effectively kill ABC. The future of broadcast cable is nothing more than live sports, so that's a segment of the company that needs to fail as well. I do feel like Disney is losing interest in this business segment though and wouldn't be surprised to see it spun off in the next 5-10 years as they shift their focus to on-demand content, which only buys them another avenue to exist in.

3. Hyper-realistic and interactive VR comes to life. No need to visit Disney World. You can touch, feel, hop on rides and interact with other people through VR from your home. This may not even suffice though. There are intangibles that come into play as well.

I think if all three of those things were to come to play without Disney changing their business in any way it would effectively destroy the company. Disney is well diversified and for it to simple cease to exist is hard to imagine. Like I said previously the DISNEY brand is so valuable there likely would be someone to swoop in a purchase the assets and operate under the Disney name.

I could discuss this forever....
