NICE!

Ironic that the sun sets on the old LAL and trees while a new visually beautiful EPCOT rises... :D

Exactly...Just a visually pleasing EPCOT.LOL

New is good in that sense.
Um... it looks like the old Epcot. How is it "new?"

5 palm trees versus the clusterf*ck of palm trees that were there before

no sculpture underneath SSE but a new one is most welcome

SSE's legs would be powder blue and not light grey

a series of blue paint in shades beneath SSE's legs, unlike the orange and navy blue paint from 1982

black and silver trim to compliment it, not the 1982 mustard yellow and purple lights.

would have new lights, smaller plants, and new benches and trashcans.

*yawn* anything else, or do you suppose we want big hair and tube socks to go along with that?

Holy cow, that's nit-picky.

I see palm trees framing the golf ball in both.

I see a light shade of blue in both (because light gray and powder blue are SO different).

No, sculpture... sure... but you said that you would like one just like before.

Blue and blue instead of blue and orange.

The trim is the biggest difference! Woah! It's like Epcot is replacing a chair rail! It will make it a whole new park!

New lights? Yawn.

Smaller plants? Yawn.

New benches and trashcans? That's a major selling point.

I thought the merf reaction to the addition of a new pinstripe on a wall was over.

Wake me if Epcot decides to do something that isn't retro.

I (actually) agree. Let's hope for something new and bold in the area around SSE (and in the whole of Epcot), not what was there in 1982 (or any other time). I know that world will not end if the ascending palm trees don't ever return.

Architecturally speaking, every mid-1990s "update" to Future World's sign systems, Epcot Plaza, and Innoventions (Communicore) areas is now more outdated than the structures they replaced. In the late 90s, the industrial look was extremely popular because it seemed high-tech. Now the steel beams, concrete structures, and monotonous color palettes simply look unfinished.

Tastes change. Future World needs to be updated to look timelessly futuristic...maybe WDI should heavily borrow from films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Star Wars universe.

Test Track (mostly its queue) looks horrendus as well and is no longer relevant especially consdering GM is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Needs a redo at least partially.

As long as it does not get re-themed to Cars I would be fine with a Test Track Refurb.

This is a very common problem with architecture, indeed with many things that go through style cycles, the most appalling look is that of previous popular style, and then that style slowly gains re-acceptance in appropriate uses.

Look at the new monorails at DL, in the 80s the original styling would have been considered dated, now that look is very in and "retro-sheik".

Just wait, soon enough people will be appalled by IKEA uber-simplicity soon enough.

Guess I never thought of it, but Future World shares the problem of staying ahead of tomorrow that Tomorrowland does.

Oh, we`re already there!

A new clutter-free central plaza and other bits should help it be a little less retro-pop culture and a little more timeless ;)

I bet Disney is waiting till the results of Universal Studios openning of their Harry Potter attraction to see if they'll do any refurb/expansion in EPCOT. They probably have some plans in the works (like alternate versions of the Gemini project), but their just waiting to see how Universal does.

(I took the liberty of correcting "chic.")
Hmmm. You make a good point, but that's why WDI should create their own look instead of copying everybody else's.

We're in the middle of a modified version of Project Gemini now.

Soarin, Seas w/Nemo, refurbed SSE, M:S, etc.

The Mouse is all too aware of Potterland. They have plans in hand as discussed elsewhere ;)

Competition is good :D

I'd like to see that Rainforset Rollercoaster in AK rather than Epcot. To me it just really doesn't feel like an Epcot attraction but it would work well in Animal Kingdom. They could have like a mini rainforest land or area.

"Please note: If you enter Disney's Rainforest Area you will get wet!"

That five year old Jim Hill article was hilariously funny. It was all presented so confidently and definitively. Project Gemini is approved, and on October 1, 2006 Future World will reopen as a dramatically updated and changed location known as Discoverland. And that's all there is to it folks!

It reminds me of Mr. Hill's more recent confident statements that Night Kingdom is a go and it will open for sure in 2011. :ROFLOL:

Interesting that the price tag was only 500 Million for all of Project Gemini. The California Adventure Extreme Makeover budget is 1.2 Billion Dollars for 2009 to 2012.

I would say these were band aid fixes rather than long term solutions. Even with Soarin, I can see the Land pavillion changing. I think Nestle has pulled out of the Land sponsorship. Whoever Disney gets to be the next sponsor of that Pavillion may want something totally new to build on the success of Soarin. Many factors will drive the changes in Epcot, not just long term goals like Project Gemini.

If Disney has some viable ideas for Innoventions (Communicore), Imagination Pavillion and the Wonders of Life, then I'll believe were actually doing things in line with Project Gemini. Otherwise, I think we just have temporary fixes.

I hope certain parts of Gemini never happen. Time Racers etc.

I don't think tha time Racers can physically happen. I think the only way we'll ever see Time Racers is if they build it somewhere that isn't inside of Spaceship Earth. I think SSE in its current format (meaning a dark ride) is pretty safe from deestruction. Now the content of the ride is up for grabs in the future I guess, but I don't think the ride system itself can really go anywhere (from an engineering standpoint).
