@Sumrdog - I guess I will hold off any plans for me to climb Mt McKinley in the future seeing how poorly I reacted to running up that hill at 1200 ft.
As I understand it, the closer you are to sea level the more difficult it can feel to acclimate to any elevation. And if you add any other factors like allegies, a head wind, a hill climb, that 3-4% can seem like a lot more. I think you could still be a mountaineer
I think the reason it doesn't affect me is because I run so slowly anyway, its like I am at a brisk walk by some standards
