Trip Report Well, I guess this is happening... July 12-28 Trip Report - Pre, Live, and Post

Hello and welcome to another Brifraz trip report. If you traveled with us before you know how it usually works - a brief pre-trip outline of plans, lots of live trip reporting, then after the trip some poorly completed scattered posts to try to wrap things up. Well, I'm doing a legit pre-trip this time. Why? Because there are some issues right now. Maybe you didn't realize that?

Which means I'm going to lead off this thread by opening it up to the debate. It's my thraed and I'm okay with that. A little debate will keep things lively - now I'm not talking about something like the thousand plus pages of debate on the mask/precautions/COVID threads, but a little discussion is totally fine and all opinions are welcome. Now, let me be clear I'm not asking I 'what you would do?' But, after reading things below, I welcome opinions on 'what do you think we would or should do.'

Obviously, you can't get into those kinds of discussions without knowing who we are and what we are all about. Here goes. Feel free to steal our identities if you need to.
6e44e73a-9723-4362-bef0-4b69fa60a0c5.JPG

Our crew is a trio. Two nearly-50 year old adults and a 16 year old rising senior in High School. The two adults are high school teachers and have been since the 1990s. Obviously that means our only potential vacation times are summer and Christmas. Two teacher salaries have by no means made us rich, but we prioritize travel. We feel it 'broadens the mind' even if it is somewhere we've been before - always trying new experiences and interacting with new people (heck, we've driven across the USA 3 times and Canada once). You can see in my signature, we head to WDW often and try very hard to make each trip unique in different ways. We had trips in December (with extended family) and January (as leader of over 100 high school kids plus families) and were planning a summer totally away from the World. We had a vague plan to travel to Europe for a few weeks driving through multiple countries. It was going to be the last big family trip before our daughter goes to college. But we just couldn't afford it - there was just no way to make it work. Since we are DVC and have some family-owned timeshare, we can stay at WDW (or that area) for pretty much nothing more than our expected annual fees and we drive from Maryland, so transportation is pretty cheap. Airfare and hotels around Europe was cost prohibitive. Our daughter already has a senior Disney trip planned with friends for next summer and we were possibly doing a couple trip as well, so buying an AP for late this summer through early next summer is also an expense that we expected (although we didn't expect it until next year). Thus, some time in late January, we decided that we would do some smaller trips (including college visits) around the country and then spend a week at WDW.

Sadly, the smaller trips are pretty much all gone due to the current health crisis. But our WDW trip is not until mid-July, so it might still be happening. Health-wise we are all in pretty good shape. Sure, we've got the usual little things that tend to happen as you get close to 50, but nothing that makes our immune systems compromised and certainly nothing that puts us in a higher risk group. As a pair of high school teachers, we get exposed to pretty much every bug that shows up in our communities and in general we weather things pretty successfully. Our daughter currently works at the local grocery store which similarly puts her 'in harm's way' on a regular basis. While the concern over the coronavirus is certainly in our minds, we also are used to taking precautions and have very little innate fear of getting sick. We also have no problem wearing masks or taking other preventative measures if we are traveling.

Why would we even consider still heading to WDW? Well, just like everyone, the past couple months have been tough for us (obviously, far less difficult than for many). We have been relearning how to do our jobs, we've had to cancel 11 major shows/performances (we both teach performing arts), and we're facing the prospect of our jobs/roles changing dramatically in a few months. Our daughter has (again, obviously) missed out on a number of usual things for HS Juniors and is quite concerned about the prospect of her Senior year being very altered. The stress and uncertainty of these things makes the idea of ANY kind of escapism very appealing - even if it is limited and changed from our usual expectations.

There's a little background on us and some elements of where we are coming from with this (possible) trip. For the sake of discussion, let's assume that WDW will be relatively fully open by mid-July, but with significant precautionary measures in place. I'll be back soon with some of our thoughts on the trip and what we might or might not be planning and doing if it happens.

Okay, let's finish up our revised Tuesday! About 4:15pm we headed to Animal Kingdom with the hope of hitting a couple attractions before closing. It being Florida in summer, there were some cloudburst showers passing through so we got a little wet heading into the park - oh, and we had to activate our Annual Passes, so we didn't really get into the park until pretty close to 5pm. With such a short wait, we headed right to Flight of Passage, but made a quick pit stop on the way to get a few pictures with a PhotoPass friend - the only one we saw out most likely because of the rain passing through. We were his only customers, so he had some fun with us getting quite a few different poses - here's three of them: one 'normal,' one 'masky,' and one 'cute.'

IMG_0632.JPG

Flight of Passage was showing a 15 minute wait and that was pretty accurate. We got to the top of the ramp waiting to enter the pre-show area right about 15 minutes after getting into the queue. For those who haven't read elsewhere, they are spreading parties out between the two pre-show rooms and then just showing one combined video that has elements from both rooms. Instead of being on individual dots with your ride vehicle number, you are on a large red dot for your entire party. Once inside, they are leaving one empty 'banshee' between each party. I was a little disappointed that they are not wiping down the vehicle between riders, but I know it doesn't make much difference with the way this virus is transmitted. Of course, the ride was enjoyable and as soon as we got out, we headed back to Africa for a late safari.

On the way back we passed the Festival of the Lion King building and there was a CM at the entrance... which seemed a bit odd. She said that they are 'playing it day by day' with that show and that there was a chance it might be open some time in the next week or so. Not that I fully trust a front of house CM there, but certainly interesting if it is the case. Is it being done without the Equity roles? And, if so, I'm not sure what exactly that looks like... hmm...

Anyway, we got on the safari about 5:45pm and enjoyed a good evening ride. Despite what some others have experienced, we were not permitted to remove masks while on the ride. Not really a problem for us, but others had said that masks were not required on the safari, so again, certainly interesting. The young zebra was out on the savannah grazing pretty close to the main track of the ride and one of the elephants was trying to be photogenic, so I obliged.

We got off right about 6pm, so the park was closing and we made our way out and drove over to Disney Springs for dinner. I was pretty impressed with the crowd management (well, not much crowd) and mask wearing at Animal Kingdom. Other than some kids not doing so well at distancing in the FoP line, things were quite good. Disney Springs wasn't quite as good. Still only 10%-ish of people not in compliance, but we didn't really see any kind of policing going on. We walked pretty much the entirety of the old Pleasure Island and into West Side (sorry, I don't know the Springs neighborhood names) behind a couple and their two kids who had masks around their necks the entire time. We kept our distance.

Anyway, on to the important stuff! Dinner at CityWorks. Really enjoyed it. The girls both had burgers (my wife had the Scorpion one which she said did pack a little heat) and I had the Tinga Chicken tacos. All very good. But, of course, the highlight was...
IMG_8472.jpg

You just can't beat a couple 'choose your own adventure' flights of Florida craft brews. In fact, I have a suspicion we may end up back there another evening on this trip...

As alluded to above, we did walk through the majority of the Disney Springs area and stopped a few shops along the way. Compared to normal summer crowds it was not too busy, but compared to what we have seen in Universal and Animal Kingdom it felt very crowded! We did also grab the Pineapple Dole Whip nachos at the snack stand near the Co-op and enjoyed those before heading back to the room. And now... sleep.

BTW, tomorrow morning (and afternoon/evening) is going to be Magic Kingdom now that we have altered our plans (and park passes) based on this evening's activity!

Good morning one and all. Getting ready to head to Magic Kingdom this morning - not with any great plans in mind, just to be there and enjoy a few attractions and possibly shop a little bit. Of course, I was up this morning by 6am, so I took a bit of a longer walk around the Saratoga Springs complex. Pretty odd feeling to be at any Disney resort in mid-summer and realize that it is maybe half occupied (at most). None of the buildings here have full parking lots and about half the buildings appear to be completely empty. Not that I expected things to be totally full, but the level of occupancy is definitely lower than I expected. To that point, I walked from about 6:20-7am and saw a total of 4 other people. 2 guests and 2 CMs hanging out at bell services. Toward the end of my walk, a couple CM cars were pulling in to the resort. That's it. Based on past July trips, by 7am there is quite a bit of activity as people are heading to parks and getting breakfast, etc. Just feels pretty weird. And... for the record, I wore my mask the whole time even though I was mind bogglingly socially distant from anyone else. Must be the teacher in me trying to be a good role model??

But who wants to read about my crusades and observations, when there's a pretty picture to look at!! Disney Springs at sunrise.

Good Wednesday to everyone. This morning was our first 'opening' experience as we headed to Magic Kingdom. Okay, actually, we were a little slow getting going and didn't make it to TTC until about 8:55am, so the park opened while we were on the ferry heading over. There are dots all around the ferry for each party to stand on and remain socially distant and the benches are marked as off limits, so a little different experience for sure.
IMG_0644.JPG

As we walked up to the tapstiles, there were very few other people. The longest lines were just a couple people and most of those were because they were having issues of some kind. We got in right away and were somewhat amazed at that fact - usually 5-10 minutes after opening is still pretty crazy. And once in the park, we were similarly amazed by the lack of crowds. The first thing we actually were doing was scouting out possible spots where we might be able to get my daughter's senior pictures later in our trip - since the private photo shoot got canceled and they aren't really doing any other options. Right now the cranes are still around the castle (although down lower), so the path toward Merida's M&G spot isn't really good, but once we had passed through that way, we decided we needed to do a little driving, if for no other reason than to check out the Tron progress. And since our daughter is just days away from getting her license, I let her take the car out by herself.
IMG_0652.JPG

Next up, we headed further into Tomorrowland in order to find a spot for a picture like this one. Wait time was maybe 5 minutes at most.
IMG_0657.JPG

And as we continued to move around Tomorrowland, we helped rid the area of Zurg by helping Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Neither of us got very high scores on this time through, but we had fun nonetheless! As we left Buzz we really weren't sure of a plan. We didn't expect to be able to do all three of those things in less than an hour including checking out possible photo locations. So, just a few minutes after 10am we crossed the hub to grab a snack. But had to pause along the way!
IMG_0680.JPG

Granted, we were a little disappointed that they were not using the music from the Tinkerbell movies! ;) Only a few options were available for food at the time and we weren't really in the mood for waffles from Sleepy Hollow, so we just grabbed a snack at the Liberty Market.
IMG_0682.JPG

Frozen blue raspberry - it's not just for breakfast anymore! Not pictured is the tub of Cheddar Cheese Flavored Snack Food Product (which really is not very good, but I always seem to find a way to eat the majority of the tub). After our snack, we headed toward Big Thunder as even the wait there was still just 15 minutes (only thing listed over 20 minutes during our two hours in park was 7DMT which got way up to 25 minutes). When we got to Big Thunder, we saw that the 15 minute wait was a legit line through the queue building which is always one of the warmest spots to wait for a ride, so we changed plans and headed toward Adventureland. As we had watched the app all morning, both Pirates and Jungle Cruise had been listed as temporarily not available, so we knew they weren't opening with the rest of the park, but our timing was fortuitous as they opened at 10:30am, which happened to be the exact time we were walking by. So, we hopped on Pirates for a ride.
IMG_0684.JPG

Both sides of the loading were being used and boats were only carrying two parties each, one in the front couple rows and one in the back couple rows. And at that point in the morning, some boats were leaving empty. The ride was fun and as it was getting close to 11am and we wanted to at least walk through the Emporium to check for some things, we starting heading out after some quick shopping. But first we had to pause and wave to these lovely ladies.

IMG_7450.JPG

You can't really see at the bottom of the picture, but there were two families with little kids that the princesses (and fairy godmother) were reacting to and us - that was all! We found ourselves on the monorail back to TTC just a few minutes after 11am. The monorail was one party per door (or half a car).

Not sure if it will be the same this evening when we head back, but Magic Kingdom was decidedly empty this morning for sure. Doing Speedway, Space, Buzz, and Pirates as well as taking a 15 minute snack break and shopping through most of the Emporium as well as the shops on the other side of Main Street in just a bit under 2 hours seems a bit crazy. As far as I noticed, everyone was fully compliant with mask usage and social distancing the entire morning. The only people I recall seeing without masks over nose and mouth were in the parking lot. Starting to think that if the entire US could do things like WDW is with distance and mask use, we might be in a better situation overall (granted, this morning's reports from DHS are not quite so promising).

We were his only customers, so he had some fun with us getting quite a few different poses - here's three of them: one 'normal,' one 'masky,' and one 'cute.

Awwww, even with all the changes, rainstorms still make crowds vanish! Glad you had fun with the photographer!

I was a little disappointed that they are not wiping down the vehicle between riders, but I know it doesn't make much difference with the way this virus is transmitted.

So glad you got on FOP so quickly! Thanks for reminding us that wiping down the seat after every rider isn't necessary in terms of COVID transmission, as long as the guests make sure to hand sanitize and wash their hands!

The young zebra was out on the savannah grazing pretty close to the main track of the ride and one of the elephants was trying to be photogenic, so I obliged.

Awwwwwwww, evening safaris, what a great adventure! You're lucky the zebras and elephants were feeling photogenic!

I was pretty impressed with the crowd management (well, not much crowd) and mask wearing at Animal Kingdom.

Cheers to Disney for enforcing the rules! :geek:

And since our daughter is just days away from getting her license, I let her take the car out by herself.

I bet she's so excited! Hope the driving wasn't too scary on the way down! My mom would always worry I wouldn't put the car in reverse backing out of our driveway when I was learning how to drive.

Sounds like you had a fantastic morning at MK!! The timing of walking by just as Pirates opened, pretty sweet!

You can't really see at the bottom of the picture, but there were two families with little kids that the princesses (and fairy godmother) were reacting to and us - that was all!

This picture made me cry! I miss character meet and greets, so it will be hard to not have that in the Fall but at least we can see them. I have so many wonderful memories with characters and I know I'll have the opportunity to make more eventually....At least we get to see them!

Okay, I get it. You're being a bit impatient! Of course I was awake before 6am, but I'm not sure anyone else around here would've appreciated the click-click-click of me typing out my post at that point. But, now it's almost 8am and they are awake - so, here you go. Let's call this "A Salute to All The Lands of Magic Kingdom, but mostly Fantasyland." Oh, and you've only got 2 hours! (if you just did that in your head in Sam and Kermit's voices than you are good to proceed... if not, we might need to talk)

After the R&R afternoon (I was very happy to get to watch some EPL soccer) we got back to Magic Kingdom just a little before 5pm. Upon entry, we headed counter-clockwise to switch things up. Also as we started going in, there was thunder and lightning in the area and a few drops of rain coming down so all the outdoor attractions were down. So we hopped on Pirates to start things off - technically, I believe this means that we rode Pirates twice in a row just with a 6 hour pause between them. We walked right onto the ride.

With storms around, that meant that Splash and Big Thunder were both down and it looked a bit like a ghost town back there! We headed back to Haunted Mansion next, but I felt the need to at least get a picture of Tom Sawyer Island on the way.
IMG_0688.JPG

A couple things of note that surprised me today - the riverboat was running (didn't think it was going to be) and there were CMs at the Tom Sawyer boats this morning. We don't think TSI ever opened up, but they were there and it is on the new maps, so... ? When we got to Haunted Mansion we walked right through the front two rooms and right on the ride with no wait at all. It appeared to us (and maybe memory is just failing) that the end of the graveyard scene at the end of the ride was different - the opera singer was either missing or not lit and there was a trio of ghosts in that area who seemed unfamiliar. Not sure about this and will look much more carefully next time around.

Now it was time to head into Fantasyland and where better to start than It's A Small World! So far, all three attractions had been showing wait times of 5-10 minutes, but once again we just walked on without a moment's pause.
IMG_8483.JPG

In fact, you might be able to tell that we are the only ones on our boat. And, beyond that, there were four empty boats in front of us and one empty boat behind us. You might be getting the impression that crowds were pretty light? We are guessing that between the storms being around (never really hit MK beyond a healthy drizzle) and DHS and Epcot opening, everybody had found somewhere else to be. After IaSM, we crossed the path to Peter Pan and... yup, walked right on. In fact as we got to the boarding area the CM there said "Yay! Guests!!" It certainly is nice not to have to wait in lines, but it's also a little sad and a lot weird. As the healthy drizzle was happening when we left Pan, we went inside to watch Philharmagic. Now, we did have to wait in there, but that was just for the next show. We were far from the only people in the theatre and everyone can rest easy knowing that even with seats blocked off and multiple announcements about which rows to use and where to sit, people still failed to move all the way across the rows and plopped down right in the middle making other groups walk around them to get to open seating.

With the drizzle and still some thunder around, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was not running, so our Fantasyland tour moved over to Winnie the Pooh next. I know it will come as a shock to you at this point, but... we walked right onto our honey pot.
IMG_0693.JPG

As you can see in the picture... it was a very windy day, indeed! Since we were right in the area, our next stop was the Teacups. I won't ride with the girls because they attempt to set rotational speed records when they ride, whereas I work to keep the thing from spinning at all (it's harder than you might think).
IMG_8487.JPG

And, in case you missed the common thread here (or Philharmagic maybe threw you off), we were the only people on the ride. Next up, we headed back to Little Mermaid and, after the extended walk through the entire queue area (really??) we hopped right onto our clams with many empties around us. When we exited Little Mermaid, the drizzle had lightened up and (evidently) the thunder and lightning had moved far enough away that the Mine Train was back up and running. So on we went! Not quite a walk-on, but that was only because they were having some issues with the unload area and had to unload a train in the loading area - no idea what was going on, but it was fine by the time we finished the ride!

So, let's summarize. Into the park a little before 5pm. Pirates, Haunted, Small World, Pan, Philharmagic, Pooh, Teacups, Little Mermaid, and Mine Train. We got off Mine Train at 6:57 and decided NOT to try to dash to something else to get one more ride in. I can't even fathom doing all of Fantasyland in half a day, much less under two hours (plus two other attractions and walking almost the whole park). Now, I know we didn't go to the circus area, but both Dumbo and Goofy didn't really appeal to us with the weather.
IMG_8498.JPG

By 7:45pm, we were back at Saratoga Springs and quite ready to get some dinner! Our daughter stayed in the room and ate, while @MeffysMom and I went up to Artist's Palette and grabbed some sandwiches and a bottle of wine and had a nice dinner in the Turf Club waiting area.
IMG_0702.JPG

I think the plastic cups really create that romantic, vacation atmosphere, don't you?
IMG_8501.JPG

And that wraps up our Wednesday adventures. Today is a bit slower paced. As I mentioned earlier, I was up early as usual and took a longer walk all the way over to the Treehouses and through some sections of SSR that I hadn't done other mornings. Overall just a couple miles, but the highlight was definitely finding a few friends who walked with me for a little bit. Sorry for the blurryness - they just wouldn't stay still and pose for me!
IMG_0708.JPG

My wife is about to start her class (and is getting a little weary of 7.5 hours in front of a computer screen each day) and in half an hour our daughter has a virtual college visit. After that, she and I will be making a little trip to Disney Springs for some morning shopping and then I think we are just chilling for most of the day with a possible brief evening trip to Animal Kingdom for a visit with a Yeti. See you tonight!

Pirates is a great go-to rainy day choice!! :geek:

Well, it's so nice to know that some things never change! It's not like the seats on the end are bad views, but some people just don't get it.

Aaawwwwwwwwwwww, you got a romantic evening with the Misses! How sweet! :inlove::inlove::inlove::inlove: Looks like a nice place to have a quiet meal!

Why, they most certainly do! :inlove::inlove::hungry::hungry: We actually ordered plastic wine glasses from Amazon that are magnetic and fold down for traveling, but they look like regular wine glasses. They were like$15 but have come in handy on many a quick getaway or a Disney visit!

Hope everyone out there had a good Thursday. Ours was quite low key here in the World. After our daughter's virtual college visit, she and I headed over to Disney Springs to do a little bit of shopping and she used some of her hard earned hazard pay from the grocery store where she works to get a few small things. On the way back to the room, we stopped off at Chip 'n' Dale's Cafe to grab some lunch. Never heard of it? Neither had we! It's the snack bar for the LBV Golf Course and happens to be hidden behind the main building at Saratoga Springs (kind of under the Turf Club Bar and Grill) and has some nice lunch options and slightly lower than the average Disney prices. And there's nothing wrong with a good grilled cheese, tuna salad sandwich, and hot dog for lunch! Once @MeffysMom had finished her lunch break, our daughter and I hung out in the bedroom as she watched some tv and I read and listened to music (oh, and we both napped a bit). Pretty lazy day! Until it was time for Animal Kingdom at 4pm. Once we had all gotten ourselves ready we headed that way and got into the park around 4:30pm. So, an hour and half to enjoy.

And much like yesterday at Magic Kingdom, it was pretty darn easy to do quite a bit of enjoying. Upon arrival, the girls headed right to Expedition Everest and rode twice in a row with no real wait. I wasn't feeling up for the Yeti today, so I went to the Maharajah Jungle Trek and enjoyed walking through (although just one tiger was visible at all today and she was hiding out in a shady corner to stay cool). Next up was a trip over to Pandora to ride the Na'vi River but we did get some entertainment along the way.

IMG_8515.JPG

While it isn't quite the big thrill, the Na'vi River really is well done and very pretty. But... much to our shock and surprise, the Shaman was missing! Not sure where she's gone, but it was just a screen today and the AA was totally absent. I hadn't seen that anywhere on these or any other discussion boards, so I'm hoping it is just a short absence, but it definitely looked a bit odd.
IMG_8526.JPG

Flight of Passage was only showing a 5 minute wait, so we went ahead and rode that again. Enjoyable as always. I need to point out something that we noticed that I'm not sure we have ever seen before this trip. At the very end of the ride if you look down when the Banshee lands, there is a little creature (we have taken to calling him Gollum) who is sitting in the greenery looking rather odd. No idea who or what it is, but certainly an odd little thing in there. Next time your ride, look down at the end and check him out! And somewhere in there, I stopped to get some pictures of the faux fauna.
IMG_8519.JPG

It was about 5:45pm at this point (yes, two Everests, Na'vi River, and Flight in about an hour), so we headed back to see if we could still hop on the safari. And we did! Last truck of the day and we had it all to ourselves. Not a whole lot of good activity this late in the day - giraffes, zebras, and lions had already left the 'stage' but we did see 3 cheetahs lying our in the open (pictures didn't really turn out) and the three white rhinos were not in their usual location, but hanging out around the warthog area and right next to the road.
IMG_8529.JPG

Definitely a surprise to see them over there and as close as they were. It was going on 6:15pm by the time we got off our truck, so we headed out of the park. Late this afternoon we had decided to have a decent dinner tonight, so we had booked House of Blues and headed there for some dinner. Got the Smokehouse with two proteins and that was more than enough food for @MeffysMom and myself to enjoy and since our daughter had a salad and we shared some mac and cheese, there is more than enough for another meal worth later! Oh... and beers!
IMG_8532.JPG

And now, it's 9pm and we find ourselves back in the room relaxing a little before bed and figuring out some plans for tomorrow afternoon/evening at Epcot and trying to make sure we avoid any crowds there. See you then.

Your vacation so far sounds awesome! Low key, but still enjoying the Disney life! Good for your daughter to earn money and then be practical about how and where to spend it!

Wow! We did not know about this either and we are planning to stay at Saratoga this fall! We will have to check it out!!!

pon arrival, the girls headed right to Expedition Everest and rode twice in a row with no real wait.

Everest is the best, but twice in a row is all the G-force I can take!

What a perfect way to end the day!!! That and dinner at HOB! I will have to look for Gollum this fall! Thanks for the tip!

Relaxing and reading by the pool and reminded why Disney is what it is (and why it has such a loyal following). Lifeguard CM who just rotated off duty stayed by the pool playing with a little kid for about 10 minutes. Full break time or continue to create magic for a little one? As a veteran teacher I love seeing this so much!
