Trip Report Well, I guess this is happening... July 12-28 Trip Report - Pre, Live, and Post

Hello and welcome to another Brifraz trip report. If you traveled with us before you know how it usually works - a brief pre-trip outline of plans, lots of live trip reporting, then after the trip some poorly completed scattered posts to try to wrap things up. Well, I'm doing a legit pre-trip this time. Why? Because there are some issues right now. Maybe you didn't realize that?

Which means I'm going to lead off this thread by opening it up to the debate. It's my thraed and I'm okay with that. A little debate will keep things lively - now I'm not talking about something like the thousand plus pages of debate on the mask/precautions/COVID threads, but a little discussion is totally fine and all opinions are welcome. Now, let me be clear I'm not asking I 'what you would do?' But, after reading things below, I welcome opinions on 'what do you think we would or should do.'

Obviously, you can't get into those kinds of discussions without knowing who we are and what we are all about. Here goes. Feel free to steal our identities if you need to.
6e44e73a-9723-4362-bef0-4b69fa60a0c5.JPG

Our crew is a trio. Two nearly-50 year old adults and a 16 year old rising senior in High School. The two adults are high school teachers and have been since the 1990s. Obviously that means our only potential vacation times are summer and Christmas. Two teacher salaries have by no means made us rich, but we prioritize travel. We feel it 'broadens the mind' even if it is somewhere we've been before - always trying new experiences and interacting with new people (heck, we've driven across the USA 3 times and Canada once). You can see in my signature, we head to WDW often and try very hard to make each trip unique in different ways. We had trips in December (with extended family) and January (as leader of over 100 high school kids plus families) and were planning a summer totally away from the World. We had a vague plan to travel to Europe for a few weeks driving through multiple countries. It was going to be the last big family trip before our daughter goes to college. But we just couldn't afford it - there was just no way to make it work. Since we are DVC and have some family-owned timeshare, we can stay at WDW (or that area) for pretty much nothing more than our expected annual fees and we drive from Maryland, so transportation is pretty cheap. Airfare and hotels around Europe was cost prohibitive. Our daughter already has a senior Disney trip planned with friends for next summer and we were possibly doing a couple trip as well, so buying an AP for late this summer through early next summer is also an expense that we expected (although we didn't expect it until next year). Thus, some time in late January, we decided that we would do some smaller trips (including college visits) around the country and then spend a week at WDW.

Sadly, the smaller trips are pretty much all gone due to the current health crisis. But our WDW trip is not until mid-July, so it might still be happening. Health-wise we are all in pretty good shape. Sure, we've got the usual little things that tend to happen as you get close to 50, but nothing that makes our immune systems compromised and certainly nothing that puts us in a higher risk group. As a pair of high school teachers, we get exposed to pretty much every bug that shows up in our communities and in general we weather things pretty successfully. Our daughter currently works at the local grocery store which similarly puts her 'in harm's way' on a regular basis. While the concern over the coronavirus is certainly in our minds, we also are used to taking precautions and have very little innate fear of getting sick. We also have no problem wearing masks or taking other preventative measures if we are traveling.

Why would we even consider still heading to WDW? Well, just like everyone, the past couple months have been tough for us (obviously, far less difficult than for many). We have been relearning how to do our jobs, we've had to cancel 11 major shows/performances (we both teach performing arts), and we're facing the prospect of our jobs/roles changing dramatically in a few months. Our daughter has (again, obviously) missed out on a number of usual things for HS Juniors and is quite concerned about the prospect of her Senior year being very altered. The stress and uncertainty of these things makes the idea of ANY kind of escapism very appealing - even if it is limited and changed from our usual expectations.

There's a little background on us and some elements of where we are coming from with this (possible) trip. For the sake of discussion, let's assume that WDW will be relatively fully open by mid-July, but with significant precautionary measures in place. I'll be back soon with some of our thoughts on the trip and what we might or might not be planning and doing if it happens.

Once back at the room, we all relaxed for just a few minutes before heading to Disney Springs for our Boathouse reservation. It's one of our favorites and our daughter always gets and LOVES the filet mignon sliders - and I love what a good deal they are, comparatively. But, you didn't come to a Brifraz trip report for me to talk about our meal, you want the pictures of the drinks

STRAWBERRY GIN FIZZ. I MUST GO TO THE BOATHOUSE BAR JUST FOR THIS IN NOV!!!!!!! Not surprised people aren't following the rules, hope you're able to stay far away from those people!

It was very good. Quite refreshing after the hot day.

It was only 5-10% of people, so pretty easy to avoid. And we have been lucky enough so far that nobody has been BOTH taking off their masks and getting closer than 6ft. There were two young ladies at CityWalk who had masks off and were a bit in front of us and seemed not to really care how close they were getting to people, but we managed to avoid them pretty well. And there was a guy at Disney Springs who was carrying a drink and not wearing a mask - evidently so he could claim to be drinking from it. I think he had already perhaps had a drink or two and didn't really seem to care about much of anything.

But, it really hasn't been that bad! Today as we head out to Universal, I'm curious how it will look on a week day and I'm definitely going to be looking for the CM Preview reports from Epcot and Hollywood Studios b/c both of those are a bit of a concern.

The drinks at the Boathouse look great. We have a reservation there for mid-August and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm not a seafood fan but hubs is so I ate there reluctantly a few years ago and I had one of the best burgers I've ever had there. I hope it will still be on the menu, it had pimento cheese spread, BBQ and bacon. Have fun today!

Happy Monday everyone! It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who has followed my trip reports before to know that I was up by 5:30am and took a nice walk around Saratoga Springs while the girls slept in just a little bit later. It sure is peaceful early in the morning (and with half the resort empty).

A little before 9am, our daughter and I headed out to Universal for a morning on the Studios side of things. Not planning to do a whole lot of attractions, but spend a couple hours there and then come back to the room for some lunch and to relax, which is where we are right now - lunching and relaxing! Later today we will be heading back with @MeffysMom, but this morning we did get to enjoy a few things.
IMG_0625.jpg

In fact, here's a short pictorial essay on the attractions that we enjoyed this morning. I hope you enjoy my slightly abstract approach to things.

So, to go over what exactly that all meant.... we arrived in park at about 9:40am. Our plan had been to go through Studios in a somewhat clockwise manner starting with Minions, but upon checking the wait times we realized that pretty much all the guests start with Minions (wait time was 40-50min) so we skipped that and my daughter rode Rip Ride Rockit with pretty much no wait at all. The first picture is my view while she was riding - I kept that bench well settled on the ground. We then headed counter-clockwise and did the Simpsons ride (that's Krusty's head and hair) with about a 10 minute wait (including the 'line-up' room where the different characters are like carnival barkers). Next up was Men in Black - that's an in-ride photo of one of the buildings that the aliens pop up in. Since we did most of Potter-land yesterday we skipped through there and did Transformers (NEST). We haven't done that in a number of years and don't think our daughter ever has and now I remember why. The motion combined with 3D is a bit rough for me and not really knowing the Transformers universe, it was pretty unexciting for her. Last, but not least, for our morning was the Shrek 4D movie which was fun and certainly the most rigorous social distancing (seating each party individually in the theatre) and cleaning (spraying down all the seats after each show). All of that took us less than 2 hours and we were heading at about 11:40am.

The lighter crowd made social distancing much easier/more prevalent and mask wearing appeared to be a little more 'by the rules' today. Now some difficult lounging by the pool and possibly a nap and then we will head back to Universal (most likely some Islands time).

Hmmm... since I don't do red meat, I didn't really check out the burgers - sorry! The filet mignon sliders are a HUGE hit with both my wife and daughter, so those might be worth checking out!

Where were you planning to visit?

The original plan was to fly into Paris, stay 5 or so days, then rent a car and drive a loop around Western Europe - south to Spain, then west to Italy, north through Austria and Czech Republic to Germany and then back to Paris. It was almost a month long plan similar to our two drives across the USA and one drive across Canada. Even before COVID-19, the expense ended up being more than we could deal with this year which is why we ended up with a Disney trip (which for us is a way of saving money to maybe do Europe some time in the next couple years).

That would have been an awesome trip, but lots of driving. For when you do it in the future: avoid weekends for your driving days. Many vacation rentals in Europe go from Saturday to Saturday and the addition traffic can be horrific. To give you an example: where we’ve gone several summers to the beach is approximately 4.5 hours away. On a Saturday it could take 7 hours. When the same place started offering Wednesday to Wednesday rentals, our drives were back to 4.5 hours.

Following along. I think attitude is important and yours is great! The openings could be looked at with a pessamistic viewpoint, or a positive one. Thanks so much for the positive ones. I know all is not perfect at this time, but you are at Disney!!!! Can't wait for the rest of your report!

So, I honestly think that there is no better nap than the nap a day AFTER an extremely exhausting day. This afternoon (after my postings), I got a good hour long nap which really hit the spot. No pictures of that, sorry!

@MeffysMom's class wrapped up a few minutes before 4pm, so we were headed back to Universal a little after that and got into the park at about 4:45pm. This evening we were back on the Islands of Adventure side of things. Soon as we got in, the girls books a ride with Hagrid that was pretty much coming right up (I believe it was for 4:50pm) so we headed right back in that direction. Originally, we were going to do Hulk and Spiderman tonight, but the line for Hulk was between 50-60 minutes all evening, so back to Potter-ville. They rode right away while I wandered around the shops for a bit. The line moved pretty quickly this time so they got through by about 5:15pm. Oh, and they got a picture with some of Hagrid's dragon eggs.
IMG_8433.JPG

Soon as they were off, right back onto the app they went and booked it AGAIN for 5:30-6pm. So we had a few minutes to do some other stuff, which meant a quick Forbidden Journey with Harry and friends. There was no line and really we didn't see anybody anywhere between entering the queue and the load area, so we snuck our masks off for a quick second to take a picture.
IMG_8436.JPG

Please don't tell the Universal Police! After that one, we decided to take a step back from the thrills and did a ride on Flight of the Hippogriff. It was our first time ever riding that one and it was fun (in the same way Goofy's Barnstormer is), but the lap bars are NOT suitable for taller people! Ouch, right on the knees!

The girls then headed back to the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid again and were done about 10 minutes after 6pm, which meant a pretty empty park as we were exiting. Strange to see Hogsmeade area empty like that!
IMG_8439.JPG

And nice to be able to get a shot of ourselves without any fear of people showing up in the background.
IMG_8442.JPG

(please note people in the background)

Once out of the park, it was time for dinner at one of our favorite places in the theme park area (both Universal and Disney) and that is Toothsome's Chocolate Emporium (or whatever it's called). Which is pretty funny because we really aren't big chocolate people. In fact, don't think there was any chocolate in our meal! But, those milkshakes are pretty darn impressive.
IMG_8446.jpg

I'm thinking that the lack of focus on that one is most likely because these were sitting nearby.
IMG_8444.jpg

The bourbon in the Peach Smash was definitely an influence on the milkshake's photograph! But, as always the drinks were delicious. As was the food. Our daughter always gets the berry crepe (lemon curd inside and fresh berries on top). And it never disappoints.
IMG_8448.JPG

And us grownups decided to share a couple appetizers - the Totchos (with cheese, andouille, green chiles, and bacon) and the BBQ chicken flatbread.
IMG_8449.JPG

Really good food and great fuel after a long day in the Florida heat. Much as we are a bit bummed out that parks are not really open past sunset and that evening activities are quite limited... we are very happy to get back to the room, drink a bunch of water, and get to sleep somewhat early.

Thanks! All is certainly not perfect and I'm not sure I'd call my viewpoint totally positive... but, I know how much we all need positivity in our lives and I like to share whatever I can generate with those around me. There are certainly some moments on this trip where we wonder what the heck we are doing, but so far, I still maintain that my trip to Wal Mart about a month ago was far more 'high risk' than anything we've experienced down here (so far).

Good Tuesday morning everyone. Okay, well, I guess it's almost 1pm here so a little after morning. We just had a big old cloudburst come through here at Saratoga Springs, but now the sun is out and the heat index is working its way right back up over 100 degrees! Nothing like Florida in July (the temperature at home this week is actually forecast to be warmer than Florida, but the humidity and sun angle down here make that 'feel' temp much worse).

This morning was another visit for Universal for my daughter and I while @MeffysMom was busy working hard here in the room. Today we did Islands of Adventure and managed to hit just about everything we wanted to do in a two hour window. We arrived about 9:15, so a little after park opening (which seems kind of sacrilegious, but I feel like rope drop is the worst scenario in our current state of things) and headed right to the Marvel Island (after securing Hagrid's for 9:40am). Historically, I don't really ride Hulk - and it helps save time by not making us use lockers - so our daughter hopped on that by herself to start the day. The wait was listed at 10 minutes, but really took pretty close to 20 which wasn't really an issue, just an observation. Then we did Spider-Man without any real wait, just a few seconds at the load area. So we circled the lagoon and got to the actual-virtual line for Hagrid, which was much shorter and faster moving today than the other time that I did it. All of this meant that we were moving toward our water adventures right around 10am. Ooh, but had to get a picture first!
IMG_7438.JPG

That's definitely the look of people who are ready for some wet. First up on the agenda was Jurassic Park River Adventure. Either I'm getting way more observant or the animatronics were moving less or, more accurately, waiting longer to start moving. Or maybe it's the reduction in misters? But it was fun and got us suitable wet. Then it was over to Dudley Do-Right which I always enjoy as I was a big Rocky and Bullwinkle and by extension Dudley Do-Right fan in my youth. I tried to somewhat explain things to my daughter as we walked through the queue. Which is a VERY long queue, especially when we were the ONLY people in it the entire way - at least three logs in front of us and two behind us were totally empty. She did enjoy the puns on the signs, so that was fun! It was a couple minutes before 11am at this point, which is when Bluto's Barges opens up, but the rope was down so on we went. Of course, this one is the big soaker and it did not disappoint - we were both totally soaked by the end. But at the beginning I was ready to hang loose!
IMG_7439.JPG

A bit to our surprise, Universal was NOT requiring masks on any of the water rides. On Dudley and Bluto, it made some sense since they were both one party per vehicle which is more than enough distance for sure! On Jurassic, there were just two parties on our boat - we were in the front and another in the back which made it feel a little less comfortable, but it was still a good 10ft between the parties, so I guess it's okay to de-mask.

After 6 rides in 2 hours, we were headed back to Saratoga Springs to enjoy some lunch and relax... which is what we are doing now!

Which brings me to our plans for the next couple days which have now been quite altered! With the coursework that @MeffysMom is doing requiring her to stay in the room from 9am-4pm and our daughter and I having pretty much done everything we want to at Universal (and many things multiple times), we've decided not to drive back over to Universal this evening... instead, we just booked Park Passes for Animal Kingdom! Yup, we are a little nuts as we will be going there right at 4pm for just a couple hours. But we decided we really want some Disney park time at this point! We also booked a dinner at CityWorks for 6:45pm tonight, so we will head right there from Animal Kingdom.

This might end up altering tomorrow's plans as well as we had been planning to do Animal Kingdom in the morning and then back again in the late afternoon, but now might just have a lazy morning at the pool or some time at Disney Springs. Thursday and Friday have also already been changed a bit as our daughter has signed up for a couple virtual college visits those days at 9am, so we won't quite have the mornings we had planned for either of those days either. But, I'll make sure to keep you updated each day!

If I could ever be a morning person, I find that I would enjoy the peaceful walks around the resorts, as well. @riverside

That is so cool, that you were able to jump on such a popular ride without a line!! :geek:

and that is Toothsome's Chocolate Emporium (or whatever it's called)

Toothsome's may be what eventually gets me to Universal. That and Harry Potter. I find it hard to leave the Disney bubble but I keep hearing good things about Toothsome's and Universal so I may have to see what the fuss is about eventually.

Our daughter always gets the berry crepe (lemon curd inside and fresh berries on top). And it never disappoints.

Looks delish!!!

You guys sure have gotten a lot done at Universal!! I hope you enjoy your quick trip to AK this afternoon! I'm sure @MeffysMom will be delighted when her course work is over and she can join you!

Ohhh, and I want to know what your daughter thought of her "virtual tours." Sad that's the way it has to be these days. Nothing like visiting in person. I hope wherever she ends up she is happy and enjoys the College Experience.

I am an alarmingly morning person - even after a late night, I rarely sleep much past 6am. Great...at times.

The Potter stuff is pretty awesome, especially if you are a fan, which our daughter is. Toothsome’s has some amazing dessert type stuff and everything else is solid. The theme is reminiscent at times of the old Adventurers Club at Pleasure Island which was a favorite of mine for many years, so that helps a bit. Plus our experience with staff there has always been excellent.

Our daughter has already done 6 or 7 virtual college tours and while she’d much rather be there in person, she does enjoy the virtual events and learns a lot from them. She is slowly narrowing down choices!
