Pre-Trip WELCOME HOME...Our First Trip as DVC Members!

Well this is very exciting for me to be putting together...a pre-trip report for our first park visit as official DVC members! My wife Kelly was adamant about returning to the World in December to experience Christmas in Disney World so we started looking into what our trip might look like back in January.

The last couple of visits we've made WDW, including the most recent in August '16, we rented DVC points to stay in DVC accommodations. We started looking at what that would run us for a trip in December and ended up stumbling across a few resale sites. Well after a few inquires and a lot of research we ended up putting in a bid on a membership at Saratoga Springs to get our foot in the door.

Almost 10 long weeks later we finally received our official membership information from Disney yesterday and here we are...proud DVC members but still kicking ourselves that we didn't seriously look into doing this years ago!

Nonetheless, we are super excited and as new members we quickly started getting into the nitty-gritty of planning our Christmas vacation.

WHO
The usual suspects. Me (Matt), my wife (Kelly) and our two daughters (Ella and Lennon). It's early enough that maybe the grandparents might sneak their way onto the trip but at this point it's just the four of us. We had such a blast last year and we are very much looking forward to getting back again this year.

WHEN
This much we have planned. We will be making our journey from the snow and cold of Edmonton, AB down to what we hope will be far warmer weather in WDW from December 6-16, 2017. I am very much looking forward to wearing shorts for 10 straight days in the month of December which is definitely not going to happen here at home!

WHERE
We jumped online last night once we had everything confirmed and set up with the membership and quickly secured a studio at our home resort, Saratoga Springs. While we'd have no issues with staying here for our upcoming adventure, the idea at this point in time is to look for accommodation elsewhere once the 7 month booking window for non-home resort stays opens up.

We have been floating around a ton of options to this point and ideally our top choices would be (in no order whatsoever) Boardwalk, Beach Club, Wilderness or if we get really lucky, Grand Floridian. It's more than likely we will have to jump on some wait lists for our requests and maybe even split resorts for our trip but that wouldn't be an issue at all. At least we know we have a place to stay and we can start looking into the rest of the trip details from here to December.

*EDIT* - Since first posting we've switched resorts. First night will be spent at AKL and the rest of the trip will be enjoyed in a one-bedroom villa at the Beach Club. Very much looking forward to experiencing two resorts we have yet to stay at.

We have put our name on the wait list for that first night so hopefully the entire stay will be at Beach Club but if not we will definitely make due.

WHAT'S NEXT
We've got a pretty long countdown before we finally step foot back at WDW and from now until then we can concentrate on all the other particulars. As Canadian residents we will be taking advantage of the 25% off theme park tickets, we'll have to secure flights and of course we will be on top of potentially changing resorts, booking our ADR's and scheduling our FP+ once those windows open up.

There will be many updates made to this report in the coming months but I couldn't wait to get back on here and share our news!

Pumped to be DVC, very excited about seeing WDW all dressed up for the holidays and I really can't wait to experience Pandora for the first time!

Looking forward to posting more details as the planning unfolds and I hope that you'll continue to read along and provide your suggestions for restaurants or other fun experiences we should try when we make our way back.

Awesome! Thanks for letting us know
I haven't read this whole thread yet (sorry!!), but can't say enough good things about the new breakfast at Trattoria al Forno!! Definitely was a highlight of our last trip. There were 5 of us and each ended up ordering something different and nobody was disappointed! I really enjoyed it not being a buffet.
Plus the character interactions were so much fun!! Rapunzel and Ariel were great, but Flynn and Eric really stood out and we had fun playing with them.
Highly highly recommend and can't wait to go back!
I've done 1900 Park Fare also and would pick Trattoria al Forno over and over again, unless the characters were really pulling you back to 1900 Park Fare

We are in Ontario, about an hour east of Toronto. I am travelling with my daughter (14) and my parents. I will definitely keep an eye out for you and your family. When I get some time to get some planning done I will start a Trip Report of my own. Hopefully our plans will have us in the same parks one of the days.
Canadian over here too! Where abouts in Ontario are you? Were in Oakville!

Great plans so far!

We are also DVC members (well my parents are, which we've inherited since we don't really travel much as a family anymore....I'm okay with it LOL), Canadians AND heading to WDW for Christmas (however our trip is December 26 - January 4). Can't wait to hear more about your trip plans...your just a couple weeks ahead of our "important" dates, so I'll be sure to keep on the look out for your updates!

Thanks for your great review! I'm thinking this will be more than enough for us to give it a go. Besides, it's always nice to try something new.

We've hit 180 days and our ADR window is open...kinda.

We have two separate resort reservations so one window opens today and the rest tomorrow. At any rate, we have booked our first restaurant reservation for Chef Art Smith's in Disney Springs on the evening of December 7th. We likely arrive too late on December 6th to really put any plans in place and the next day we will be moving from AKL to the Beach Club so we planned to just hang out and stay away from the parks until the 8th.

Menu looks tasty at Chef Art Smith's...looking forward to it.

Rest of the dining plans will be in place tomorrow morning.

After another early morning wake up call but our dining plans have been set! Luckily we were able to book everything we were hoping for with the exception of the Plaza. Our timing for that one didn't work out though I'm sure we'll be looking at ways to shuffle things around to hit up a favourite.

At any rate, here's the full list...

December 7 - dinner at Chef Art Smith's (new)
December 8 - dinner at Teppan Edo
December 9 - dinner at the Crystal Palace (no dinner times at the Plaza)
December 10 - lunch at 50's Prime Time Cafe
December 11 - breakfast at Cape May Cafe (new)
December 12 - dinner at via Napoli
December 13 - lunch at Beaches and Cream
December 14 - Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast (new) and dinner at 'Ohana
December 15 - breakfast at Be Our Guest (quick service) and dinner at Mama Melrose (new)
December 16 - farewell WDW breakfast at Kona Cafe before flying home.

Not a bad list in my eyes and a couple of new dining experiences for us, as noted. We will be using the Dining Plan this year for the first time which will likely be a benefit with three character meals on the schedule.

Hopefully we can find a way to make an exchange for the Plaza somewhere along the lines that doesn't screw up the planning we are doing but we shall see. Christmas parties at MK have made planning a little more challenging this trip but no big deal.

Now that this is done the next big item to cross of the list will be flights and counting down to the 60 day window for FP+!

@Matty30 you should be able to do your Plaza dinner as a walk-up. The Plaza stopped accepting dinner ADRs (and only allots a few lunch ADRs) in order to cater to walk-ups. :)

I'll be on the lookout for your lovely family as some of our dates overlap.

Ah...thanks for the heads up! We didn't know that about the Plaza. We've already had to make some adjustments as the date we originally had slated for the Christmas party was sold out. We've added the Plaza for lunch on December 12 so all our bases are now covered. Made a number of adjustments to the list above which I'll update soon.

It would be so cool to run into you during the trip! Hopefully our paths cross while we are both there

And just like that we've already made changes to the ADR schedule. Mostly dictated by the fact the December 14th Christmas Party being sold out. We've secured tickets to the Party on the 12th instead and have adjust our reservations accordingly.

So now things look like this...

December 7 - dinner at Chef Art Smith's
December 8 - dinner at Teppan Edo
December 9 - dinner at the Crystal Palace
December 10 - dinner at 50's Prime Time Cafe
December 11 - breakfast at Cape May Cafe
December 12 - lunch at the Plaza and dinner before the Christmas Party at 'Ohana
December 13 - lunch at Beaches and Cream
December 14 - Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast and dinner at via Napoli
December 15 - breakfast at Be Our Guest (quick service) and dinner at Mama Melrose
December 16 - farewell WDW breakfast at Kona Cafe before flying home.

Looks like we now get to enjoy everything we wanted so hopefully we're all set!

Been a while since the last update and it seems like we just can't stop tinkering with our plans for the upcoming trip. As we have detailed earlier in the PTR, we were planning to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge the night we first arrive in WDW, December 6th, before moving to Beach Cub Villas fore the remainder of the trip the next day. We also put in a wait-list request for the Beach Club should that first night open up.

Well, as I randomly decided to check the DVC website this morning to see if anything different was available to my surprise a one-bedroom, lake view villa at the Grand Floridian was open on the night of December 6th so I quickly called member services to make the switch. Both Kelly and I are pretty pumped to be staying at the GF even if for one night. Will be super cool to have that lake view as well...what a way to kick off the trip.

GF was first on our list of places to stay once the 7 month window opened up even though we knew that was going to be a long shot. At least this gives us a chance to get a little taste and say we stayed there once!

This has, however, forced us to more than likely book a red-eye flight departing Edmonton at 12:05 am the morning of December 6th with a layover in Toronto before landing in Orlando around 1:30 pm. Figured if we were going to use a decent amount of DVC points on one night at the GF we might as well make the most of it as opposed to landing at 8 pm and checking out the next morning at 11. We may be playing with fire having the kids fly all night but I'm hopeful we will survive and make it work!

This has also allowed us to book another ADR for the evening of the 6th so we will be heading over to an old favourite at Whispering Canyon Cafe for dinner.

Even more to look forward to with the change of plans. The weather here in Edmonton has been absolutely brilliant of late but I must admit I'm hoping this hot summer weather passes us by quickly as it will mean we're that much closer to Disney!

How did I miss this PTR from one of my original WDWMagic friends, @Matty30 ?? Congrats on becoming DVC members and booking your magical very long Disney trip!!!! My family bought DVC a few years ago and since then, they've gifted us our resort stay with their points ever since. It's a beautiful, generous thing!
You guys will LOVE AKL and while I've never stayed at Beach Club, I've heard wonderful things. AKL is so welcoming, peaceful, and heart warming. Your dining options look fab. Happy continued planning!

Thanks you for reading along and for the congratulations! Crazy to see how so much has changed since we first became WDWMagic friends many years ago! We look forward to many years of great memories with our DVC membership and maybe, just maybe, when our kids get a little older we can be just as generous as your family is to you.

I was looking forward to AKL and have heard all the same things you've described but as of today we ended up moving that original night at AKL to a lake view Villa at Grand Floridian. Can't really go wrong either way I'm sure but hard to pass up the chance to stay at GF, even for a night!

Just means we will have to enjoy AKL on a future trip.

I totally love how you guys keep tweaking plans. We tweak like 15 times so I relate. It adds to the fun, right? There are so many options. GF will be great for the girls to be so close to MK.

The countdown to actually leaving on the trip just seems so far away....makes it tough to sit on our hands and wait which usually leads to all kinds of tinkering and adjustments here and there! Definitely adds to the fun and keeps the trip topical. Even though we still have many months to wait it seems like it's coming quickly thanks to all of the additional thoughts we've had since booking everything.
