Good afternoon everyone, since my engagement in September I have set a goal to loose some weight by my upcoming honeymoon in November 2013. I am 24 years old and at the time of my engagment i was 146lbs. I am down 9 pounds since then, and just been walking and using "my fitness pal" app to count calories. Does anyone else have any goals they are trying to achieve by their upcoming trip? Tips they want to share? Support they want to give?

My DH and I always feel like we have to "train" for our Disney trips. Yes, want to lose weight for those pictures but mostly, your body does so much more moving and different things while at Disney. If you train for that, you will also loose weight. So you might want to run for weight loss but also walk. You have to get use walking all day for those days in the parks. Also weights for strength training - carrying the back back for 12 hours and just getting your muscles used to standing all day. Make sure to get those steps in - 10,000 - it will also help train for walking in the parks. :) My DH and I are currently going through IVF and the focus has become to become healthy lifestyle and not weight loss b/c I can't make any big changes to my body while going through this. But, I have lost weight and feel great with just these 10 changes. Here are some things I have found b/c the result is that I have lost weight:

1) take one day a week and make it meatless. (careful of too much soy b/c it can alter your hormones)
2) whole food blending for smoothies in the a.m. We invested in a Vitamix - the thing is amazing. We do whole food juice blending every a.m. using frozen berries, protein powder and spinach. Its a great way to get those fruits and veggies and protein in the a.m. and you should see my skin now!!! WOW! Totally makes a different.
3) avoid preservatives and packaged foods
4) Half your plate should be low carb veggies (avoid corn, potatoes, peas, etc)
5) drink water - I read a great article on when to drink water. You should have 2 glasses when you wake up before coffee to help your organs get moving. 1 glass before each meal to help feel full. 1 glass before a shower to help stabilize blood pressure bc we tend to take showers that are too hot. And 1 at night before bed. This is to help hydrate b/c we get dehydrated during the night.
6) incorporate yoga for stress release b/c cortisol from stress (i.e. from planning a wedding) can add pounds even when you are loosing weight
7) avoid artificial sweeteners and all sodas.
8) to detox daily - warm water and fresh lemon. Like a cup of tea with out the tea.
9) reduce caffeine
10) avoid white sugar and white flour.

Hope these help!!

I work with 6 dietitians so I am always asking for diet advice from them. They have all pretty much said watch your calories along with your fat, sugars and sodium.. Get as much protein as possible as well as fruits and veggies. Make sure you ALWAYS take in at least 1200 calories a day because any less and your metabolism slows down and you actually lose weight slower cause your metabolism is all outta whack! Considering they keep our patients alive with nutrition regimens, I think they know what they're talking about!! lol ;)

I'm totally with you on the fruit smoothies, except I have them at night. Ever since I was little I've been used to having a "dessert" before bed, so the smoothie is my new dessert. Much healthier than some of the other crap I was eating. I'm glad you posted this...I've been meaning to add spinach to my smoothies and keep forgetting.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of Vitamix do you have? I'm looking to get one soon. :)

ETA: Here's the smoothie recipe I use...the Alton Brown (of Good Eats/Iron Chef America) buff smoothie. I use this recipe as my starting point and customize from there...for example I use regular 1% milk instead of soy (probably will switch to almond milk soon), pomegranate juice instead of acai (if you watch the video he says to pick a purple juice for maximum nutrients - I try to make sure whatever juice I get is no sugar added), and rather than peaches I use 6oz strawberries and 6oz blueberries. And I want to add spinach to it, which I keep forgetting. But I have added it in the past and it doesn't change the taste at all. Biggest issue is trying to find frozen fruit at somewhat cheap prices...

When I make this smoothie for my husband he has a "yellow" version: milk, mango/orange juice, banana, pineapple, peaches and mango. :)

I walked a total of 63 miles while in the parks in January . We had breakfast in our room and had either lunch or dinner each day. (We're not big eaters). I gained 5 pounds. I did lose the weight shortly after we got back home. I even skipped on the Mickey bars this time! I have since lost 23 pounds.

We got the vitamix that has the extra blender - for dry items - as well as the larger blender container for wet. We do not have the variable speeds - thought it was unnecessary. We have power on and off and high and low and it is more then enough. I have to check at home to find out the exact model type.

We use almond milk + protein - vanilla. We use frozen mixed berries, spinach, flax seed, and the almond mild. We also make the green monster. :) Try carrot and pineapple! :) Its a good combo too!

A friend of mine, decided to see a nutritionist about 6 months ago. Needless to say, 6 months later she's down 59 pounds. She wasnt on a diet" exactly. She was allowed to eat anything she wanted except potatoes, rice, and pasta (after 8 weeks she was allowed to eat a special pasta... i cant remember the name) However, it worked by spreading out the most calories/carbs toward the beginning of her day. I recently started it and have lost about 9 pounds in 6 six days.. Another friend of mines started 3 weeks ago and has lost 21 pounds. And none of us are the type of people who drop weight fast, so this is truly a magical moment for all of us. Good Luck to you all. Only 152 more days to get in shape for disney for me!:D

Thanks for the info! I was into green monsters awhile back too but OD'd on them...LOL!

Here's what I'm looking at...we have a Vitamix outlet near us that sells refurbished models:
https://secure.vitamix.com/Certified-Reconditioned-Standard.aspx

Normally I don't like buying anything refurbished but I like knowing that the store is right there in case I have any issues, and it comes with a 5-year warranty...

That's fantastic! I hope you and your buddies continue to do well! :)

I went to a nutritionist in 2009 and she basically told me how many of each "group" to eat per day - i.e. 2 carbs, 7-9 (!) veggies, etc. It worked initially and I lost 20 pounds (I was super motivated with my wedding coming up...haha). Unfortunately it wasn't something I could realistically enjoy doing for the rest of my life and I gained 10 of it back after the wedding and a back injury. :( I hope you continue to have more success than I did!

Now I'm on Weight Watchers, which has worked better for me. I lost that 10 pounds I gained back, plus 10 more! Still have a bit to go though...

Different things work for everyone, just a matter of finding what is realistically sustainable...I think. Still trying to figure it all out!
We LOVE Alton Brown! He is so funny and informative.
I love AB too! Did you see his "Live and Let Diet" episode? That's where the smoothie recipe is from. We just ditched cable and I do miss Good Eats :( Need to look it up on YouTube I guess.

I love My Fitness Pal!

Now that I'm firmly ensconced in middle age and my metabolism has decided to give up the ghost, I focus less on pounds and more on generalized fitness goals like, "be able to run a 5K in x minutes," and practical goals like, "be able to fit in the same clothes for the rest of my life." ;)

My Disney World-specific goals are to increase my cardiovascular fitness so I can comfortably walk the parks all day, and I promise myself certain "delayed rewards" for good dieting, such as a special table service dinner or Disney snack. I find that a great motivator is, when I'm tempted to touch an unhealthy snack, I ask myself, "which do you want more -- that Cheeto right now, or an ice-cold, creamy citrus swirl, melting slowly in the Florida sun, in a few months?"

Both my DW and i have changed to a LCHF diet since june last year and it has worked out fantastic for us. ( 10 stone total betwwen the two of us(140lbs)) . Started regular excercise also walking at least 2-3 miles everyday and including more things as we tone up ( crosstrainer/Zumba).My best advice for anyone loosing weight is Slow off is better. Also check with your GP before changing anything drastic.
Keep perseveering everyone as its not always easy but the benifits will come :D

Congrats on the 23 lbs!!! We basically did the same thing last year, I'm sure I walked around that and I didn't eat all that bad, or so I though. I gained 7lbs. Made no sense to me, I ate yogurt parfaits and Eddy's Strawberry bars (instead of mickey ice creams). Came back from Disney and packed on another 10ish lol. I've gotten back on track after that and now I am actually close to the lightest I have ever been as an adult.

I turned 60 this year and I started to prepare for Disney by walking on the treadmill. Not running but walking building up my strength. I also cut out all soft drinks and only drink water know. Cut down a lot on my sweets too. Not losing a lot but feeling better. Its a start!

This is the one we have:

http://www.qvc.com/Vitamix-Creation...ck,.product.K38547.html?upsh=1&sc=K38547-CSWB

Normally we don't buy things on QVC - but it offers a payment plan and its the best price - we checked EVERYWHERE! And this was the best price. We actually got it for less then it is currently going for. $399 and fee shipping.

We LOVE it! I have a smoothie board on Pinterest. My signature has the link to me on Pinterest. :)

1.Don't stop eating the stuff you love. Just eat less of it. I have been doing that for years and have dropped over 120 pounds. If you stop eating what you love you will crave it more and binge.

2. Even light exercise works wonders. Walking, does wonders, light weights not more than 10 pounds.

3. Nine pounds is good for any woman, just don't overdo it.
