The USA Today article should provide some nice publicity for Universal. It is more of a fluff piece than anything else.
But there was one thing about the article that stuck out. Am I the only one that was surprised by how much of an arrogant Al Weiss was? I don't know what kind of context those comments were made in, but they really came across as very rude and condescending, considering that one of them was false. At least Bob Gault is not running around trashing WDW. This comment really struck a chord with me:
>>>"Let me put it in perspective for you," says Al Weiss, president of Disney World. "Universal's critical mass is still less than what (Disney) offered 25 year ago."<<<
That is ridiculous. Let's see, 25 years ago, what did Disney have? Three resorts, one theme park, a couple of golf courses, a dining/shopping, and a camp ground? What does Universal have? Two theme parks, three resorts, a dining/shopping district, and a water park. They both have their differences, but I believe that Universal has a second theme park rather than a campground and some golf courses has a slight edge. If he was referring the actual land ownership, then he would be correct, but considering that Universal has basically comfortably into under a 1,000 acres that Disney spent over 6,000 acres for, that doesn't really matter.
I think the real point of the fluff- er, article, is the first sentence:
"Bad news, Mickey. Your days of dominating tourism to Orlando may be numbered."
That is true. The days of WDW being the only major resort in town are officially history. Over the next few years, Universal is going to hammer that fact home, and if Weiss's comments are any indication, they are not going to see it coming.
I sincerely hope that Disney is not going to choke on the humble pill they are about to swallow.
