Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

Who: Tuvalu and Woody

Happy New Year!

I had to get through the busy holiday season before wrapping up this trip report. And going to WDW immediately before Christmas only added to the chaos ~ but more on that in a minute.

EPILOGUE

Our bonus day ended up being a highlight of our trip and we did manage to avoid bad weather on our drive home. My dad’s military interment service was a few days later and the happy memories/nostalgia I experienced at Disney had provided the respite I needed during a very sad and difficult time.

No regrets with Keeping Genie in the Lamp. As you read, Woody and I were able to do everything we wanted without paying extra to skip lines. Personally I wish all attractions were standby only, like they were July 2020 - September 2021 (and 1971-2000 😉). I don’t mind waiting as long as the line is moving. (Fastpass of any sort bring standby lines to a halt.) Additionally, many standby queues have cool things to look at!

Full disclosure ~ I did contemplate purchasing Genie+ for a day on my upcoming December trip with Em, for research purposes. But after reading multiple reports of the epic fail of Genie+ during Thanksgiving week, I decided against it. I was also prepared to pay for an Individual Lightning Lane (ILL ~ could there BE a better acronym? 🤣) so that Em could experience Ratatouille. Turns out I didn’t need to.

Thus I Kept Genie in the Lamp for a second time. No regrets there either. I did not plan to write a trip report for December so I didn’t take many pictures and have only a few notes. But a few things happened that I’d like to share, so keep reading if you’re interested.

Glad to hear it can be done. Given the fact that we are going during low crowd levels (if there still is such a thing) and we have 10 days in the parks, I am hoping we can get it all done without shelling out any extra dough! However, I am fully prepared to pay to ride Remy if we have to :)

The title of this TR is so perfect Tuvalu! We did the Genie+ in December and didn't think much of it. I truly wish we went back to the paper fast pass days! I would definitely be interested in reading about your trip with Em! Thanks for entertaining us with your WDW adventure! 🥰

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ~ I have a love/hate relationship with visiting WDW right before Christmas. I love being there surrounded by festive decorations and music, the holiday illumination of the parks at night and the anticipation/excitement of the season that’s in the air. BUT….I hate having to rush around beforehand (wrapping/shopping/cooking/baking/freezing) to ensure everything is prepped and ready for Christmas….prior to even leaving home. It’s a lot of work in addition to the usual “before vacation” tasks!

However my beloved daughter only turns 30 once and ‘twas a milestone to be celebrated! Teaching prevented us from going earlier in the month (on her actual birthday) so when break began we hit the highway.

Over two years had passed since we’d walked along the Sassagoula and it felt great!

(@LeighM you were right about trees and garland in the lobby of POFQ, they were lovely. 🎄🎄)

Which park did we visit first?

(Hint: It should make @Zipitidoda proud.)

She’ll have to settle for our selfie. The tree PPP had disappeared, and the other PPP (standing near the tree, mind you) would not take our picture as her job was to take photos of the front entrance. :bored:

We didn’t have as much time in the park as we would have liked, thanks to a hellish drive to FL which took two hours longer than usual. More importantly, we had a dinner ADR with a fave Magician that we did not want to miss!

Em and I were privileged to introduce @Nunu to Burnt Ends Nachos and Chocolate Lava Cake at Whispering Canyon Cafe (though you wouldn’t know it from the picture. 😉)

Apparently it had been gussied up for the holidays. It typically looks like this….

….at least that’s how it looked the many times we’ve inhaled it in the past.

(Note to the chef: the ice cream belongs atop the warm cake, for the ultimate hot/cold gooey contrast. The fruit is completely unnecessary!)

I now get why you've been giving the Burnt End Nachos and Chocolate Lava Cake, great reviews, those discoveries of yours, are to die for, although the best part, was enjoying them alongside good friends! ❤️

Oh, and please add Frank and me to your list of grateful Magicians on your recommendation of Mama Melrose's. ;)

Sorry it was such a rough ride down to FL! I bet a lot of Disney guests are so thrilled to be able to walk along the Sassagoula once again! It's too bad you weren't able to get a PP picture in front of the AK tree. Your dinner at WCC sounds delish and that warm chocolate lava cake is on my must try list now!🤣

I'm interested! December trip reports are my favorite. It's my birth month, so I'm always trying to gauge when are the best December days to go, what are the ins and outs of beating the holiday crowds, etc.
December has become a very popular month to visit over the years. Generally the crowds are least the week after Thanksgiving and grow exponentially the closer it gets to the 25th. All bets are off the week between Christmas and New Year's, the most crowded time of the year. (This was even true back in 1995, the one time my family went that week and vowed NEVER AGAIN.) As always, rope drop is your friend.

Glad to hear it can be done. Given the fact that we are going during low crowd levels (if there still is such a thing) and we have 10 days in the parks, I am hoping we can get it all done without shelling out any extra dough! However, I am fully prepared to pay to ride Remy if we have to :)
With 10 days in the parks you should have no difficulty seeing everything without utilizing Genie+. Remember on your Epcot days you have two opportunities to get a BG for Remy, at 7 am and 1 pm. If you have more than one Epcot day scheduled, I would definitely try for a BG on your first Epcot day and hold off paying for Remy.

Though we found ourselves posed in front of another Christmas tree, temperatures suggested a summer day (or Christmas in Australia, I suppose. 😉)

Put us in the group of folks who consider Hollywood Studios to have the best holiday park decor. The retro theme is festive and fun. However I also think the park’s small size makes one feel like they are smack-dab in the middle of a Hallmark movie, with Christmas surrounding them nearly everywhere they go.

But ~ like the other parks and resorts this year ~ cutbacks in the quantity of decorations was obvious. Toy Story Land was missing Christmas Cookie Hamm and Woody was not wearing his Santa hat. Fewer lights adorned bushes and there was no garland or wreaths in the stores. I hope the cuts were temporary due to current labor shortages but I have a small fear that those “cost savings” will be permanent.

Additionally, some decorations don’t transition well to the 50th blue/gold/earidescent color palette.

(@ajrwdwgirl we were the last car to leave the dance studio and heard Daisy’s Wicked Witch cackle again!!)

Most guests find ride stoppages annoying. I’m one of them. It disrupts the flow of what you’re experiencing and breaks the fantastical illusion. When the ride restarts, it takes a few moments to “get back in the zone” so to speak.

Ride evacuations on the other hand……I’m ALL IN!!!!

I confess to becoming giddy with excitement those (few) times I was part of an evac. My most recent one was the highlight of my day. (How sad it that?!! 🤣)

Em and I were doing battle on Toy Story Mania (@LeighM Midway was dropped when the new entrance opened in Toy Story Land) and she was besting me in score. Normally this would bother me and I would become an even more aggressive player, but today my focus was on accuracy rather than speed. My accuracy percentage was the highest it had ever been as we entered the Ring Toss room and I was looking forward to seeing how high it would be at the ride’s conclusion.

I will never know.

We had just begun to toss our rings when this happened. The aliens went into hiding.

We sat staring at the screen for a minute or two.

Then….LIGHTS ON!!

Shortly after there was an announcement to remain in our seats (duh, we were trapped by lap bars holding our laser blasters) and that cast members would be coming by to escort us out of the attraction.

Oh my gosh we’re getting evacuated!!!

I was so excited I dropped my 3D glasses on the floor of our vehicle….twice. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My initial reaction was to take as many pictures as possible. I started discreetly as we waited our turn.

To free guests, a CM must unlock the side panel and lift it up.

The doors to the vehicle then open automatically, which cause the lap bars to raise up. Each guest disembarks the vehicle and utilizes a step stool (which is carried from vehicle to vehicle) to get down to the floor. Guests are instructed to stay put until a CM returns to lead them in line through the other sets, picking up other trapped guests along the way.

As Em and I waited my hand was poised on my phone, ready to snap more pictures.

“Mom, DON’T!” Em warned. “You’ll get in trouble.” (Code for Don’t embarrass me, Mom.)

I amused myself by looking at all the lights and booms in the ceiling, leftover from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - Play It! (I’d been inside that attraction dozens of times as it was a family favorite.)

Walking through Toy Story Mania with the lights on was pretty cool. And I probably could have taken pictures without getting into trouble, as there are YouTube videos taken by ride evacuees. But it was more important to keep the peace with my daughter!

At the exit CMs were scanning tickets/bands to grant each guest a recovery pass.

6749C3BD-B0FF-4E35-8158-0C8334992BE5.png

Of course ROTR, MMRR, Slinky Dog and one other attraction(?) were exempt. Em wasn’t up for RnRC or ToT, and Toy Story remained down so our recovery pass went unused.
