Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

Who: Tuvalu and Woody
When: October 22-29, 2021

I've always wanted to experience a ride evacuation - on an attraction I've done lots of time like HM or something. NOT the first time riding MMRR. Such a sad time LOL. Thanks for letting me know about the Midway drop.

DHS at dusk was a pretty sight to behold.

I hope you like the picture. It’s the only one I’ve got. Em and I hurried over to Sunset Blvd. for the Sunset Seasons Greetings show.

Where we waited and waited. 6 pm came and went and no projections on the Tower of Terror. What the heck?

Turns out DHS began their holiday projections later than the other parks.

We couldn’t stay any longer.

No Way José. 😉

We didn’t make it to the Magic Kingdom until Day 3.

I had not packed enough shirts for warm weather. Thankful I found a festive top to purchase at DHS the previous day.

Em was sporting her World Series Champions shirt which got her a few “Go Braves!”

We made it to the park for early entry. Did not Arty Pooh, but should have. We went to Peter Pan first and were on and off in ten minutes. Then we trekked to Pooh where we waited 25 minutes during early entry! (Still worth it 😉.)

The new digitally-remastered Philharmagic is terrific and the Coco scene blends in seamlessly. Em and I are once again in love with Philharmagic, like we were upon our first viewing in 2004.

What are the odds @tonystark that in 2021, my doom buggy would stop above the ballroom not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES?!!? I should play the lottery!

The park was very busy but we managed seven attractions without the Genie. We headed out in early afternoon and enjoyed a (rainy) boat cruise from POFQ to Disney Springs. Em purchased a cute Mickey slingback backpack from Vera Bradley, with gift cards she received from her students. (Fun fact: Disney Gift Cards can be used at the Vera Bradley Store in Disney Springs.)

The meal we looked forward to most was dinner at Steakhouse 71. Woody and I had that fabulous lunch in October, and I expected dinner to be another home run.

It wasn’t.

Em and I were seated in a far back corner near an exterior exit door. There was another mother and daughter right next to us and a family of 4 adjacent to them ~ while the majority of tables in the main area remained unoccupied. Oddly we all had different servers! Ours, under the guise of being friendly, was actually very pushy in trying to upsell us. When we didn’t order any extras, she “accidentally” overcharged for the two sides that were included with our entrées. (It would have been easy for me to overlook the additional $22 had I not been paying close attention.)

Unlike The Wave, there is no complimentary bread service at dinner. Pull-apart “monkey rolls” are available for the low price of $12. 🙄 Em and I both ordered steak (when in Rome….) She had the filet mignon with macaroni and cheese.

The filet came in two pieces. I ordered the beef tenderloin medallions which looked exactly the same. I expected the “medallions” to be smaller and more than two in quantity! (But our server could have messed up, who’s to say?) Each steak came with one sauce of your choosing. Em had Bernaise, I went with the Chimichurri. The beef itself tasted fine but was not buttery-soft like tenderloin should be.

The steak frites (with chimichurri) I’d had at lunch were much tastier.

The sides were the best part of the meal. Em said her mac and cheese was outstanding. My yummy au gratin potatoes were the same as The Wave’s.

But….

What was once a good dinner value (The Wave) is no more. No bread, no drinks (we only drank water) and two entrées was a pricey $86, after the AP discount.

From now on we’ll stick to lunch.

I’ve been out in that corner of Steakhouse a few times when it was the Wave. I just thought they were trying to hide me as a single diner.

we did Steakhouse for breakfast and lunch over Thanksgiving and it was fine. The meals were tasty enough but I wasn’t as in love with it as the Wave. I did like the art on the walls, especially the hallway into the restaurant.

We were there before our World Series gear arrived in the mail, but Rhett wore his Braves hat just about every day and got soooooo many "Go Braves." I think we were there within about a week of them winning, so it was still very fresh. I think Em's shirt is the same one we got!

We need time for things to happen.

Following along!

Disappointed to hear this about Steakhouse 71. I always loved the Wave and I wasn't as upset about the replacement of it when I heard what was planned. I think we're going to have to at least give it a try, but maybe it will be for lunch ;) .

I'll tell you one things servers are such a huge part of the whole experience. If you get a great one, an OK meal can be awesome but if you get a bad one...man o' man it just about ruin the best meal in the world.

Sorry for all of the likes! I have been absent a couple of months and I am trying to get all caught up.

Belated Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to Em! I hope her 30th was great! Wishing her many more happy and healthy years to come!

I am making a point to try LTT on the next visit. It always looks so good! We were there Thanksgiving week and the week after and geez, the after Thanksgiving crowds were in full force last year! We normally love that week. Hope once the 50th is over, the lower crowds will be a thing again that week.

I agree 200% about the HS Christmas decor, I enjoy it the most by far.

Looking forward to the rest of Em's birthday recap!
