wow...
I guess that mall isn't usually surrounded by a lake.... wow....
and you live two min. away. How did your home fare?

Well, Luckily, my home is to the top right of the picture. The big white and red building is blocking it. As far as I know, no flooding in my home, but I am not sure about the roof.

I'm back in Metairie, LA till Wed. We're going back to Arkansas for a while until Oct 3. Then we'll decide if my son will finish this schoolyear on schedule in Ark., or if we'll return and re admit him on the extended school schedule. My house stinks to high heaven, even with the fridge out because the meat blood came out the freezer when the power went out and soaked into my tile grout. We had to ditch it, but the stink won't leave, even after soaking in straight bleach. Also my some of my tile roof shingles are missing, wood fence bent over, gutters messed up and stuff but we didn't get any water inside the house YET. Please don't let another hurricane hit us. We'll all get fubar'd with another hit. I live right by 17th street canal levee on the lucky side. BTW the levee was blown by officials. At least that is what 2 of my neighbors reported seeing with their own eyes, live from metairie on my phone right after the storm. This was before the media hype and the coverup.

I pray for the others who weren't so lucky.

BTW the damage to the area is severe. I can't believe the sights from I10 in kenner and Metairie. Driving down vets. and W. Esplanade has me speechless. Many missing roofs, power lines down, many many huge trees upreooted and broken. Many homes are gutted and the remians are on the curb by the piles of fly laiden garbage that stinks bad. Many apartments are destroyed and the streets close to my house are blown up for the engineers to get concrete to patch the canal with. Street lights are getting restored but many intersections have no lights and have temp stop signs. No stores have ice and they close real early if open. Many fast foods are closed and have limited menu to buy. It sux here and I couldn't get into eastern New Orleans so no reports. No crossing the 17th street canal by Vets, w esplandae, or met road. I think today Western N.O. is allowing people back but the rest is supposed to be still closed.

Good luck and god bless everyone affected.

Just got some news from my mother about my wife and my apartment. Well, a ton of shingles have been blown off, the celing in our kitchen and our den is starting to peel as the sheet rock must have gotten wet. The condenser (A/C) for our apt. got blown over on the roof, and the water line on my truck is about 3-4 feet from the ground. So, I believe that there should be some nice mold growing in the cab, and some nice filthy water in the exhaust and oil pan (i guess).
But, it could have been a lot worse.

You wouldn't happen to live in a 1st Lake apartment? We service Windmill Creek and I've heard that all of the first floor units got at least 2 feet of water.

Then they came back to make sure everyone's power was on and told us goodnight (and Jodie went to bed to work another 84 hours straight)

No, I live about a block off of Causeway, between Vets. and W. Esplanade.

Sorry to hear that man, I hope everything works out OK for y'all. I live(d) two minutes away from you on Carrollton Ave. Wish I could have met y'all but we're going to live in Arkansas at least 8 months then move somewhere permenant while renting my houses on Carrollton. Good luck.

Funny, I am in West Little Rock. We have been here for a month. We are staying at the Ashbury on Chanel Valley Drive. I am waiting for my landlord to get insurance approval to get some repairs done to my unit. We didn't flooded, but my celing is peeling, and my a/c on the roof got blown over. As you know, living there with no ac sux.

I have run into so many people who are homeless. They come into the offices asking to be put on the waiting list. The most heartbreaking is the elderly. Most had lived in their homes for 40+ years and now have nothing and arent' allowed to return to view their homes. One couple who came into an apartment that Mary and I were cleaning, said they lost everything and they were at least 75 years old. She almost started crying and we put our arms around her.......*I'm tearing now*. Mary and I told her that as soon as she got settled in; that we were going to come look her up and have coffee with her. She got so excited and said "Please do". These people need alot more than material things, and if we can give them a smile for 15 minutes, then we will.

Is it 5:00 yet?
I just want to add my two cents..I am glad everyone has checked in. Things are slowly getting back to "normal". It's weird to live in my home which is fine and then when I drive down the road I see so much destruction. It's hard to get used to it. I have been able to drive down hwy 90 since I work for an Architect.. almost everything is gone down there!! That storm surge ruined a lot of buildings. It's very depressing...you can't even tell where you are because most of the familiar landmarks are gone. We'll get through it!!
Luckily I don't have to cancel my Dec Disney trip!! I am definitely looking forward to getting away for a while!

Well, the wife and I finally returned home on Sat Oct.15. Man, some of the destruction leaves me speechless. As we drove around the neighborhood we live in, and I grew up in, I felt like crying. Part of my stomach dropped. It is so weird seeing some of the houses. Some are pretty banged up, but still in good enough shape to live in. My heart goes out to all of those who lost everything.
We came home knowing our air conditioner was still not replaced, so I got us two window units for the mean time. We had to get home, I missed out on a bunch of cash jobs, and a job interview bieng that we were "stuck" in Little Rock.
Luckily, we did not have to cancel our Dec. trip to WDW. Boy, do we really need it!
Under the circumstances, it's good to hear most of you who have been displaced, and affected by Katrina and Rita are ok.
