WDW Permits Part 3

Yeah, but they weren't responsible for the placement of it.

When the hat was originally conceptualized the ears were going to be movie reels, that would have also doubled as Ferris Wheel's. It was going to be at the front of the park, but park ops didn't want it. Instead merchandise said, "we'll take it" and so it becomes a pin store. To me, the placement of the hat is a bigger issue than the hat itself. If the hat was out in front of the park, I don't think anyone would care.

I agree with the opinion portions of your post (I had never heard of that original intent or the ferris wheel thing, so I won't agree or disagree).

It's a cool icon and fits with the theme of the park. Fantasia is a classic Disney film, and DHS is a "film studio". However, putting it right in front of the Chinese Theater was a completely irresponsible decision. That building was amazing, and they devoted a LOT of resources into replicating the original theater exactly. I'll never forgive them for the placement of the hat.

If they just want to move it somewhere else, that would be fine. I still think it's a far more impressive icon than....whatever the official icon was before (the Earful Tower?).

FYI, Concept art for the Sorcerer's Hat Ferris Wheel is in the first few pages of the Imagineering Field Guide to Hollywood Studios. I believe Jim Hill has also talked about it either on our show or Magical Definition.

That's the only one I don't have...and it's because our local B&N stores never stock the DHS copy. They have plenty of the other 3, every time I check. Very odd. I guess I'll break down and order a book online.

08/11/10 Update

Big day for permits, especially for those filed by Disney's own "construction company" - Buena Vista Construction Company. Always vague filings, but thought-provoking.

Two permits were filed for 1396 MK Drive. One was specifically for "Be Our Guest Cart 1" and the other was for "#B". Another permit filed for 1400 MK Drive with no details. All 3 map to essentially where BatB will go - which makes sense, given the description.

Also in the MK, some work at Pirates by Disney, and refurbishment of 4 elevators by Otis Elevator.

At Epcot, work at the "East Gate Facility" and SSE.

At the Studios, they're doing something to Trailer D-5, which is back on Cypress Drive.

Over at AK, some work at Tusker House, new electrical outlets in the aviary buildings, and (let's not get excited) something at Everest.

Very interesting stuff but how often do you check into this?

Are you asking me? If so, I update this thread daily with the new building permits (Notices of Commencement) that are filed with Orange County for projects at WDW.

It was just a general question! So you check the County's permit list daily? Wow, very commited you are. I haven't been on these boards in a while but will definitely be checking in on this, thanks for your diligence!

Oh boy, permit to complete SSE work. If this gets out there it will revive about 10 different threads. Good work and very very interesting.

Very interesting. I am really starting to dislike the vague construction permits though. Lol.

I'm glad that they are starting on Be Our Guest. I can't wait until the next aerial pic!

Yup. Every single day. Sometimes I'm a day late, if I get busy or forget. I inherited the task from Master Yoda, who had kept it up for quite a while.

It's mundane and often unfulfilling, but there are the occasional gems (like the start of FLE) and ones like today that spark discussion (even if they're really just for replacing a handrail or something silly).

I know. That's what I'm afraid of, especially with the one for EE at AK. They're either fixing the Yeti....or removing all of the Yeti artifacts from the queue with the hope that guests will forget he ever existed

BVCC can be counted on for their vagueness. While everyone else has to attach a survey sketch and provide meaningful descriptions, they get away with just listing an address and putting a description like "Equipment, labor and materials required to complete project."

I like to think they do it on purpose because of people like us - to keep us in the dark on their "in-house" projects. But it could just be that they know they can get away with it and are lazy about filing permits :)

And yes, looking forward to Scott's next aerial photo contribution.

Haha, yes I like to think it's because of us.

08/17/10 Update

Apparently they've been saving them up for several days. Big day for filing permits today.

It appears that they're going to do some planter work in the area of the Hat.

Lots of work at the International Gateway. Also, the drawing attached to the SSE Electrical Work filing is humorous, as it specifically says "Spaceship Earth Geodesic Dome".

There's one for "Electrical mock-up" at GF Building 9. I wonder what they're mocking up. Maybe a possible remodeled guest room?

Electrical work at Space Mountain.

Big guest room refurb starting at Movies. Buildings 1-10.

Some electrical and misc work at the Reservation Center up in Orlando.

And the last one I had to put under UNKNOWN because, honestly, I've never heard of "Maingate Mall". I even Googled it. Any ideas?

Does Disney own a strip center along US 192 perhaps? A lot of the hotels along US 192 west of I-4 have traditionally used the term "Maingate" to describe their location. That's Osceola County though, not Orange.

It's possible, though I've never heard of it. Maybe something down at Flamingo Crossing (or whatever it's called).

That specific permit was filed in Osceola County, btw.

First post!

Could the "Maingate Mall" reference refer to the toll booth replacements and any etc. happening around the "main gate" of WDW? This would mean that the word "mall" was used meaning an expanse of land rather than as a shopping center. Probably a long-shot guess...
