News Walt Disney World will not host any further Night of Joy events

Lets keep this on top. GD is nothing like NoJ.

GD at the parks is just an informal gathering of people, not a big concert infront of the castle like NoJ was before it was moved to WoS.

Sounds like from the comments here that NoJ, was long past its time and was ended for similar reason to why GradNights was ended. It's unfortunate that the actions of a few ruined these events for all those that behaved, but also sounds like the organizers could have and should have done more to ensure proper supervision.

If NoJ wanted to continue they would still need disney to be willing to sell the park out to them. There are very few organizations/companies who pay to buy out the MK as it is HUGELY expensive. And if the events were causing vandalism/"operational difficulties" its doubtful disney would want to rent it out to this organization.

Yes they could have their attendees just pay ticket sticker price and go all on the same night, but its doubtful that they'd want to do this as I'm sure it would cost more than the NoJ package deal that they had for 35 years. Also if your just "attending" a park that would mean no concert on site which was the core of the evening.

Sorry. I am genuinely missing your point. What does Lets keep this on top mean? Confusing comment. Night of Joy and and Grad nights were disruptive to operations overall for guests overall at WDW. I am just unfamiliar with the phrasing of Lets keep this on top. Disney has a history of dropping events like this including Star Wars and Soap weekends. All relevant to the pattern.

Not sure that’s possible. For a majority of NoJ’s run, it was held in the MK with large stages and top CCM artists brought in. Not really the same as “buying the park out”, and not a matter of commitment. This event needed Disney’s backing to happen as far as I can tell.

Not really. Gay Days happen without buying a park out. They do not need Disney. They can adjust what they do in a park or a different venue just like Gay Days. Flexibility if the cause and event is worth it to those involved and their commitment to event like Gay Days has. Many of their events are in parks unofficially and others off property. Compromise if the event is worthwhile.

Not sure what you’re getting at here, seems like you’re eager to compare this to Gay Days when they operate quite differently.

Sure the NoJ promoters could choose to go in a different direction, but that’s doubtful given they had spent 35 years bringing in multiple acts to the MK. Events like this happen all over the place throughout the year, so WDW is hardly the only option. What made NoJ different and special was the MK, so when Disney decided to move it, there really wasn’t a reason to keep it on property at the prices they’re likely being charged.

I don’t blame Disney for making the change if it was an operational nightmare. I also don’t blame the NoJ people for moving on. I’m sure they will continue what they do and will find other unique venues. Just not sure what it has to do with commitment as you stated.

Predictions from last year's thread...

Now that it's not held in Magic Kingdom, I hope it's popularity drops and the event is discontinued. This is one event Disney doesn't need in my opinion. I always thought mixing Disney with in your face religion was always kinda iffy.

As long as Universal has Rock the Universe (another fantastic event, I make a point to go when Kari Jobe attends) the event is going nowhere. It truly makes bank. Also being honest, it's not in your face, at all.

It is so sad that they are discriminating against Christians , Disney is supposed to be all inclusive but I guess not. It's not about money because this event mad3e a ton of money and it was awesome that young people were introduced to Christ so sad.

I don't think there is any discriminating taking place here. Fact is it was very difficult from an operations perspective.

But yet, the tour groups keep coming, and WDW isn't addressing that behavior...
Yeah like the South American groups in the summer. They put out rules for them and totally ignore and they run wild Crickets. they pay money... Other group not so much. Oh and they are renting out 3 hrs at MK at night now for big bucks. Money is now ALL Disney is about.

Like Grad Nites these were operational nightmares for the cast, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

However, I do wonder if someone finally wondered why Disney was hosting hard ticketed events targeted toward a specific religion. Gay Days, for example, while not a religious thing, isn’t a Disney-sponsored event and the organization which manages it does after hours buy-outs on their own and sells tickets to these private events. Seems antithetical to Disney’s “we are open to everyone all the time.”

Something tells me the next change will be Candlelight adding in other non-denominational stories.
Boy I am surprised that they have not done that ? I am sure it is coming. Unless they can figure out how to make more money out of it.

put me in the camp that's partly amazed it ran as long as it did

generally, maximizing profit is akin to polite conversation; avoid anything that would keep a dollar from your pocket; ie. politics and religion

the joy checks cashed for 30+ years yet the scale tipped and it was axed

where do you get your information those things never happened.

Over the last 10 years across multiple Disney forums, there have been dozens if not hundreds of posts from CMs describing Night of Joy. You take a bunch of repressed teens, set them loose without their authoritarian overlords, and you're in for a debaucherous event. You can find similar reports of event staff across the country who consistently report the same thing. If you use the search function in this forum or others you can find specific details etc...

I don't follow the events, but yeah, they seem to happen pretty frequently.

4 times a year. January for the full marathon, February for the Princess Half, April for the Star Wars Half and November for the Wine and Dine Half. A total of 13 days in a calendar year. Fewer days than hard ticketed events, like MNSSHP and MVMCP, that close MK early to regular guests.

And the parks aren't closed for the races. The only race that might impact any of the parks is the full marathon, as the course runs through all 4 parks, with the runners bringing up the rear most likely running in parks that are open. runDisney events bring in millions of dollars in registration fees, merchandise sales, hotels, and food and beverage each weekend.

I think we're headed into dangerous territory here. We should probably keep the discussion confined to canceling the event as it pertains to business and logistics. Otherwise, I fear it will be shut down and it's an interesting topic.
