News Walt Disney World will not host any further Night of Joy events

I'm sure it is a 100% financial decision. Disney is cracking down on value. They would need to raise the ticket price to $100 a day and probably felt attendance was low anyway compared to other events. I wonder if group rates are next.

That should make Rock the Universe at Universal even more crowded. (And one day of that was canned last year because of Hurricane Irma).

Looks like Grad Nights and Night of Joy at MK were both pushed out because of business decisions (aka $$$), so this is just gas on the fire of the argument that the value in Disney World is dropping.

Every year we heard what a nightmare these were for cast. So I guess it was time to move on. And as others have said, they're making money on other things, they don't 'need' NOJ anymore. I assume Universal will continue it/their version? I know many who do enjoy it (at Universal). I don't mind them offering contemporary Christian/pop musical acts, again, many many guests enjoy it, but it seems better suited for Universal.

My bet is on that Steven Curtis Chapman ran out of hymns to screw up.

Teenagers by the busloads (many of them there with complimentary tickets from church youth organizations, outreach programs, etc), non-parental chaperones (and not enough of them) and a lot of kids who just viewed it as a free trip to the MK.

What could go possibly go wrong? ;)
And very questionable behavior that I'm not allowed to discuss on this site. If you are that curious, check other websites that discuss the very questionable behavior with guests. :cautious:

...Yeah it was that bad :grumpy:

I would imagine it had less to do with money and more to do with the behavior of the guests attending both events.

Probably 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Given the current price point and all of the problems that went on, I feel quite safe in saying that Disney felt the bang to buck ratio just was not there.

If Disney could sell the place out at $500 a head then they would still be going on.

thought events like this were part of the reason for building that new venue at espn world of sports

though im sure the attendance was alot lower last year than years when it was at the MK as i could see lots of people going and not caring about the concert and just using the time to go on rides etc since i doubt they kept all the concert goers hostage in the hub by the castle

35 years is a long time to keep doing the same thing over and over and over again

and like others said events like halloween party have gotten super popular now that when every night sells out they pretty much run out of nights in the month to offer it enough times to meet demand

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. Front-line Cast Members be damned lol.

I had to make a slight edit.;)

I went once with my kids karate school. I have never wanted to leave a place more than I did that night.
I respectfully disagree. I believe the CM’s who have shared the nightmare stories from these events. What I don’t like is that it is pinned on religion, when no one knows the beliefs of the troublemakers. They don’t check that at the front gate. ;)

As others have said, it’s the lack of supervision and maturity that caused the problems. Plenty of well-behaved teens and adults enjoyed the concerts and attractions. It’s a shame that some couldn’t handle it.

Clearly Disney was ready to move on from this event when they moved it to WWoS, they had to know it would fail there. They simply don’t need this event anymore from a financial standpoint, I wouldn’t make any more of it than that.

Like Grad Nites these were operational nightmares for the cast, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

However, I do wonder if someone finally wondered why Disney was hosting hard ticketed events targeted toward a specific religion. Gay Days, for example, while not a religious thing, isn’t a Disney-sponsored event and the organization which manages it does after hours buy-outs on their own and sells tickets to these private events. Seems antithetical to Disney’s “we are open to everyone all the time.”

Something tells me the next change will be Candlelight adding in other non-denominational stories.

I guess over the different park locations, it probably seems more frequent to me than reality...

Run Disney really does not really impact park operations. The events are prior to opening.

My oldest kid did his college internship at Disney 2011-12. His comparison was older teens let loose in parks that normally don’t have that freedom and well..he dreaded high school Grad Nights as well, same reason. Equivalent of Prom nights on steroids.

Night of Joy can still happen if they Wish just like Gay Days. Gay Days are well organized but not by Disney nor is it an official Disney event. It has gone on for decades and I see no end. If Night of Joy Wishes to they can organize the same event themselves just like Gay Days. Depends on if they are that committed to the event. Time will tell if JOY has that type of commitment that the Gay Day organizers do. I’m very curious to see if they do.
