Virgin Megastores, including Disney location, will shut down this summer

I wondered about this after seeing an amazing collection of empty deconstructed shelves in the Classical section of the store a week or so ago. I guess my unfortunate hunch was correct.

I will miss Virgin - they always had the most interesting humor book selection. But then again - who buys CDs anymore?

I offically have no reason beyond the AMC theatres to visit anymore, (and I only go to that theatre because it's convienent).

True.

Gah. I'm so crushed.

Twas' the only place on property that sold Anime, Comic Books, MST3K, Video Games, and Action Figures...

And Travis is correct in every watchmen inspired statement he's made thusfar.

I second that! If it wasn't for the theater being so close, I'd stop going to DTD also. Yep the megastore will be missed; it was a great place to hang out while waiting for your movie to start or waiting for PI to open. But this wont effect Disney, I'm sure they've got a plan already...just like they do for PI:rolleyes:

I have to admit, I haven't been to DTD in so many years. We don't even bother. :snore:

The closing doesn't shock me, considering the technological world we live in...people are downloading and iPod-ing more than buying CDs.

Oh well. Let's hope Characters in Flight helps boost the morale!

Rarely went to Westside anyway. Cirque and dinner were about it.

Marketplace I'll still go to.

AC, but that's a whole different rant. :lookaroun

My initial observation was that Virgin had kind of a cool subversive feel to it, considering the location.

I remember the first time I went in there sometime in 2001, I came across a tell-all bio by some adult film actor and thought how strange it was that you could flip through something like that at (technically) Disney World. It was kind of a neat counterweight to all the pixie dust, I thought at the time.

I'd probably be scanning the wire reports for any news about a deal with Barnes and Noble or Borders for that massive hulk of a generic building...

Yeah.

Barnes and Noble would be good. Borders a little worse.

According to Google Maps, there is a Borders at the LBV Factory Stores just off property. The closest B&N as I can tell is further north near Universal.
So of the two, the "best choice" would probably be B&N.

What else besides a book/music-store could fill that shell? I don't know, I don't know...

The only reason I went into the West Side on my last trip was because the PI bus stops were closed for repaving and they were using the West Side bus stops instead.

Before that, I'd have to go back to June '07, when I was doing a photo tour of all of Downtown Disney. I actually stopped into Virgin Megastore, but only to get a snack and drink in the café while I cooled down from the oppressive heat that day. The café's outside balcony also made for a couple decent elevated photos of the West Side.

Maybe they could use the rest of that space as an internet cafe?? I don't know.. I hope Apple wouldn't get a store there... I'd prefer a B&N..
An Apple cafe/restaurant isn't out of the realm of possibility...

Of course, the signature dessert:

Apple pie...
