Virgin Megastore

Would ESPN Zone really be all that great? I've never been to one but all I picture is just yet another overblown themed corporate resturant... not the type of thing that will draw in the locals.

Every "Sunday Ticket" bar in this part of town is packed for NFL games (and college games)--Alehouse, BW3s, Fridays Front Row... Part of living in a town when none of the locals are "from" here. It wouldn't take long for an ESPN Zone to attract a local crowd in the traditional WDW off-season.

The arcade, while pricey and busy, will also be a big draw for families. I spent nearly three hours playing in there a few years back. For a sports fan it's even better than DisneyQuest.

an idea, ESPN zone gets VMS building and also the Disney Quest. Apple gets The PI Clubs. A Genius Bar in the spinning dance floor!

Now something that has been bugging me, I can't find a single report that Virgin is closing. The only thing i have seen is that they are helping the company that use to be VMS in the UK, and that some stores in the US are closing...

I haven't seen any reports saying this either, however it looks like it going to happen. Zavvi, who i believe own Virgin Megastores in the US but only rebranded in the UK, are shutting down a lot of shops in the UK at the moment. It is Woolworths fault really, they used the same supplier, so when Woolworths went into admin, so did the supplier, which lead to Zavvi also going into admin.

It sucks really, i always went into Virgin multiple times during my stays at WDW and always ended up buying many CDs and books from there. They did have absolutely everything, and a large section of my cd collection is from there. As for the future of the space it is in, hopefully HMV will take over to keep me happy lol. Does HMV have branches in the US?

I don't understand why you would want ESPN Zone's enormous, expensive arcade next to DisneyQuest? I could see that making DisneyQuest even less popular, but maybe Disney would enjoy not having to run (read: allow to stagnate) their own arcade anymore and let someone else deal with keeping everything state-of-the-art. All we then do is trade a large, empty Virgin Megastore for an even larger, empty DisneyQuest. Either way, Disney will end up with a large, empty space that they need to replace with something novel and flashy. My guess?

Convert DisneyQuest into a DVC and call it a day...

To the person who said they would never switch to downloads (I'm sorry for not remembering your name, it was 8 pages ago), it's a very real possibility that if you plan on listening to music in the future...that may be your only choice. If you refuse, I hope you have your players of past ready to go, as you will be digging out 8 Tracks, turntables, cassette and CD players and listening to music from the last 4 decades. :lookaroun

I can see an Apple store in that space. True if you're visiting and getting ready to jump a plane back to somewhere, you might not be shopping for a laptop, but with the iPod Touch, you can download music from your iPod, so no iTunes on a computer necessary. Same with an iPhone. And I bet you'd be surprised at the number of people who impulse buy an iPhone (and other products, I'm sure). Accessories would probably be a big seller there-you got there and forgot your ear buds, or decided you need a more protective carrying case for something or a car charger for the way home. If nothing else, it's a great place to touch, feel and try Apple products-a big demo store, essentially. My $.02.

I believe a report came out today saying for the record industry to surivie fincially they would have to stop releasing CDs, or at least on less of a scale they currently do. I think that will be a shame, as over the past couple of years i have began collecting CDs. I still refuse to make the switch to an ipod from CD players untill i have to in order to enjoy new music.

Ahhh, I have been waiting for someone to make this point. ESPNZones arcade will always be primarily sports related and more hands-on participation. Whereas Disneyquest games that are software/computer based are more strategy or virtual in there execution.

To me the two facilities would compliment each other and I think the increased foot traffic the ESPNZone would create could actually help DQ.

Especially if Disney were able to offer ticketing packages for all the attractions including the new balloon ride.

Who knows, maybe they will even bring back ticket books with A-E tickets for DTD :)

honestly, with the loss of Pleasure Island, the water parks and more option should just be made to include the balloon ride and any possible replacement for Virgin...I don't care to play a game of golf, so I'll just be buying a separate water park ticket on my honeymoon.

I'm really just skeptical of this increasing foot traffic to DQ, even if there are different types of games showcased. I just don't know how an overpriced arcade that hasn't been significantly updated in 10 years and has no particularly good dining options could compete with ESPN Zone--of course, if they finally gave DQ an overhaul, that would change things. I do, however, think an ESPN Zone would be very successful.

I always thought it would be cool to use one of these enormous spaces and convert it into a series of night clubs (I know Disney isn't likely to do this anymore)--have 1 admission price and no gang presence. It would end up being very much like a cruise ship, with different-themed bars and clubs, and climate-controlled--nice for Florida. The space would be big enough to devote a floor or two to kids, with bowling and some arcade games (take the most popular DQ offerings and move them together), so parents could have fun separate from their kids, but still in the same building. How family-friendly...

I actually like the "cruise ship" concept for clubs. Seems more likely they will opt for specialized clubs at the resorts including bringing back the AC (hopefully).

I think they could drop the admission price for DQ and go with ticket books instead but your idea is good and I can see where they would go that route too.

:

Some of us refuse to sacrifice quality. And the future will be artists releasing directly ( as pioneered by Marillion) either on disc or download, record companies are unnecessary.

It looks like this will be closed by the end of January along with the remaining few stores in the USA. This leaves a huge store along with most of PI still empty. I would think Disney would struggle to get a tenant for such a large unit so may use it for something themselves or split it. Any ideas or rumors of what will happen with it?

Wal-Mart???.....:cry::hurl:....Joking....or, God, I hope not......
Man Pleasure Island is not pleasurable anymore.............

What happened to the Downtown Disney I used to love??? That area has totally lost focus.....

I agree on the ESPNZone theory.

BUT, if there was an Apple store, at least it would suck in those tour groups in the summertime! At the Apple store at the Mall at Millenia, its swarming with tour groups in the summer.

I would have thought it would be obvious that such a large empty space in the centre of Disney is bound to be the flagship store for the newly incorporated Buy 'N' Large

hey watch what you say, Vinyl records are making a slight come back for those who dont like the digital noise and want a warm noise instead... Radio stations are not going back to it but many older consumers are buying new turntables and getting some new music on Vinyl.

Vinyl never disappeared it was just and Audiophile toy. You should see some of those record players (so expensive). On the other hand is just a fashion trend. Because they do it, someone else has to do it to.

I for once wont buy vinyl, way more expensive that a CD (and I am not a DJ anyway)

Now whatever comes in our way çest la vie.

Now for the person that suggested the casinos... There a story about that, But i won't talk about it here.
