The pictures aren't working for me...
OK Can we see them?

It seems possible they could do it up here. Like you said, they could fix up that old technology so that todays youth could see how far we've come in the last 20 years. seems like a fitting idea for epcot.
The first time I just went up the second time I asked permission and was allowed up.
See a full video tour at Mousebits in a week or soso as some one who never got to visit imageworks in its glory, what did all the things do? what were the pin tables? it looks so cool up there!
Unless you are a CM, don`t try it.Can you PM me to how to get up there?

Not anymore I`m told. They have sense removed this area from the tour, but if you ask your guide politely they will likely take you up there.

...It's almost like going...Back to the Future! *Hit it Silverstri!
Great pics, and it's definately a shame all of that sits upstairs unused. It's funny to be honest. So many people mourn the loss of the original ride, but looking at the pictures of the upstairs, it's almost as though it never left. Everything is still the same.
I wonder if when JII closed in 1998, if there ever was a plan to redo the upstairs Imageworks. Surely there must have a been a plan from the initial start of the project. I'm sure some great things were proposed, but then $$ came into play, and it all went kaput.
Personally, I'd love to see the whole upstairs come back as an entirely new Imageworks. Keep the Rainbow Corridor, though. Just a homage to the original attraction, and a little tribute for those of us who were lucky enough to experience back in its prime.
But if the space were to be utilized for anything else, why not an EPCOT Center style exhibit, similar to the EPCOT Gallery. Think about it, they wouldn't even have to change much cosmetically. That whole color scheme and style IS EPCOT Center. It IS the 80s. If everything were to come back on and work, and you left anyone who got to experience it back in the day up there, I'm sure they would totally forget that the original ride isn't there anymore. Maybe even be tricked into thinking that we're back in EPCOT Center.
Point is, and it's been beaten to death, it's a shame that such a unique area in Epcot goes unused. We all the know the current ImageWorks is crap. Hell, the 1982 technology could beat the crap out of the technology in the current ImageWorks if were to suddenly come back on. What is supposed to be an interactive playground of the future is now just an ugly mismatch of McDonald's Playland tubing and some cheap Photoshop programming.
Nope, it was always the plan to move it downstairs... Liability and insurance are to blame.
Could you expand on that? I mean the why and wherefor of the liability and insurance thing.
Just because the IW was on the second floor?
The second floor was not very easy to evacuate in case of a emergency.
Especially in the event of a fire... Their evacuation procedures for disabled guests were shocking (and ineffective)...
