Unsettling “security” checks.

In 35 years of traveling we have never stayed anywhere involving a room security check. When we stay in hotels for an extended period we always ask that the cleaning staff to not come by. We can clean up after ourselves. We have never been woken or knocked on.
This new world you speak of sounds very paranoid.

I suspect you haven't traveled much since the Vegas incident. Pretty much every major chain in the US now has a similar policy and in many cities they actively pursue it.

Or simply... enjoy the housekeeping services as a perk of staying in someone else's property.

I love being of someone always keeping my area in tip top shape for me. I don't know why people are so opposed to housekeeping. It's a perk.. use it.

After reading all the responses, the question is without everyone guessing ... just what are the checks for? When you originally check in they will know if your a family, a couple, or traveling single. So if you die in the room the single person is at risk. But then how many single people go and not travel with friends staying in other rooms.
Human trafficking, are they picking up children in the parks? Parents would be the first to report their child missing and a manhunt would begin. Human traffickers are spending money bringing their captives to the park to have a good time? They are not that nice. The extreme would be luring older teenage kids away.

When it comes to weapons anyone can carry them. But you can’t carry them through an airport. And if your staying in a DVC all you need to do is go to the kitchen area and open a drawer for a knife.

Your pre-checked through security when you first get to the park then fingerprinted when you enter the park. So Disney has you linked by name and fingerprint in their data base.
Is there anyone who stays at a hotel and doesn’t go to the parks?
So the field could be narrowed down for checks, but is everyone checked so people don’t feel singled out. Hence why some people just get a head pop in the room and possibly others don’t.
Anyway you look at it the WDW bubble has major cracks in it and it’s also a sad look at the history of the present times.

I don't know of any specific incidents, but it would be the perfect place to "make an exchange". Where else would an adult escorting a crying child arouse less suspicion?
Why on earth would people involved in that sort of thing, pay to stay in an expensive hotel, with security check points just to park there to make an exchange?
I think the initial thought about checking for guns or just anything weird is right on. Probably also checking there aren't petsbor 3 air mattresses set up as well.

When my husband and I go to watch the Atlanta Braves play we stay at the Omni hotel. This hotel looks out over the outfield of the ball park. Security checks are done here all the time. Hotel security does these room checks twice a day. I was coming out of our room when a plain clothes security officer was knocking on the door across the hall from us. He waited for someone to answer, then entered the room. We were at the end of the hall overlooking the outfield. We rode the elevator down with him. He told us this was the policy of all Omni resorts now and they have a few complaints, but they still do it! We have no issue with it at all.

I didn’t like this when I first heard about it, but at this point, it’s in place and probly not going away any time soon. Knowing this, there are two options: choose to stay at a WDW resort and accept the fact that this is going to happen and plan around it, or choose to stay at an off-property hotel. As previously stated, any resistance or aggression while dealing with the security checks would most likely result in further suspicion and scrutiny. When you book a room at a WDW resort, I’m sure there’s a clause in the agreement about the security checks, so, in an extreme case, failing to live by the terms of the agreement as a resort guest could result in getting booted out. Knowing about the situation beforehand, then complaining or resisting while you are there, is ridiculous. It sucks that this situation exists, but it is what it is-deal with it, or go somewhere else.

I got patted down and wiped for bomb residue because my pants were bejeweled on the back pockets and they were detected by the swirly machine at Orlando airport. They showed me the scan and my butt was glowing.

LOL, I know what you mean. I wore a top with a few crystals on the top part by the neck for some bling. I got stopped and patted down by a very nice and apologetic security lady. She explained that she was sorry to do this, but the crystals or any bling can be hiding things they are concerned about. She was very nice to explain. Since then, I wear the bling when I get there:)

When was the Vegas incident?
We take two to three vacations per year. Never had anyone knock or come into our rooms for anything.

If that is what you room tag stated it was different from everyone else's.

"The Disney hotel and it's staff reserve the right to enter your room, even when this sign is displayed for maintenance, safety, security, or any other purpose. The Disney Resort hotel staff with knock an announce their presence before entering".
I should have been more clear in my statement. The statement that the hotel would call us to arrange at time was stated to us via our first phone call after the first knocking on the door that woke us. My apologies I wasn’t clearer.

In regards to security checks, I read that states that allow legalized recreational marijuana usage, is that people are allowed to smoke pot in private at home or in private such as in their hotel rooms if they are in states such as California and Colorado. To possess small amounts is legal also. Anyone know if Disneyland CA hotels follow state law or not?

My guess would be no smoking in the rooms because their rooms are all non-smoking. My hotel is all non-smoking rooms, and that means no pot smoking, either. I couldn't begin to guess what their viewpoint is about pot smoking in designated areas.

The last several times, there was a letter on the bed explaining the room check policy and offering to schedule a time if that was what you wanted. But I don't remember any wording about not ever knocking if the room occupied sign is out.

and this is why I find the other poster claiming they expected to get a phone call strange. I've got the same message from several posters on this, if you want to ensure you won't be disturbed the onus is on the guest to tell the front desk not to disturb them during certain hours (eg 12noon-4pm).

What are you people doing in your rooms in the middle of the day that you're so concerned about being caught doing?
Napping , showering, changing clothes due to swimming, resting, and honestly I'm sure you can think of something adults do that being disturbed is a turn off.

I am still annoyed In having to pay for these interruptions though sometimes they are better about it than others. If my sign is on the door, I expect to be left alone. I have no issues elsewhere when I travel. Most wil leave you alone for a day before even thinking of bothering you.
