Here is the ride system I found out from Screamscape...it's a Maurer Sohne design. This will be the first of its type in the States...

http://www.maurer-soehne.com/amusement_rides/x-coaster/x-car/

2nd x-coaster in the US... first multimedia X-car installation in the world though, I think. This is not really all that new, the only difference is saying their would be LEDs on the cars which the previous press release did not.

Too bad I'm out of town when they will probably release more details...

Can you imagine how much backlash there would be if Disney decided to building something like this Uni coaster at any of their parks?

What's the theme of this ride? Youtube? Sensory overload? Generation Y?

It really sounds like a lot of people have a double standard: Disney has to be flawlessly themed, while Universal can get away sticking an unthemed coaster at the entrance to their park...

Wow. Fret, fret, panic, panic. Chill out, people. It's like it's code red around here or something.

Anyways, I'm happy to see Universal getting something new. That park desperately needs it. There's really not a lot to do inside its gates right now. And I like how they're tapping into making this a really personal experience for the guest. But would I wanna watch someone's screaming mug while listening to some sort of music? Maybe. If the camera were to switch between the person and a view of the track (maybe the guest choosing when to have it switch), then it would be more interesting. And I think the inclusion of a dramatic orchestral score would be a lot of fun to toss in too.
Making the entire ride more dramatic and pulling the people watching it in. It'll be a neat ride to watch and hear.

What exactly do you think is going to happen to Walt Disney World? It legitimately sounds like from your posting that WDW is actually going to go out of business.

Don't be absurd WDW isnt going to go out of business but it will loose a chunk of market share which will hurt them in the long run.

Universal's sudden interest in quality hasn't been seen since IoA opened, and I welcome it. The competition is necessary to spread out crowds and to force both sides to create innovative attractions.

Remember this, The coaster is going in an industrial area already... In fact with this coaster other bonuses will be coming, like the new seasonal warehouse near the kid zone to store parade floats, and be a house and such... since they are using more of the soundstages... and they are pretty soundproof :)

Good observation. Theoretically, if Disney had maintained PI's original storyline, they could have added a few relatively unthemed attractions to the area (think of Paradise Pier at DCA) without seeming "cheap." Then again, clubs + roller coasters = :hurl:.

Wow, you guys are really pathetic to get exicted over a steel coaster that has all the charm and theming of IOA's other big green machine. I didn't know there were so many coaster fanboys here. You'll love Six Flags.

While I somewhat agree with you, I don't think people have the same initial expectations of Universal, since honestly, while they've made great themed individual attractions, they haven't been in the 100% immersive theming business until IOA was built.

Universal is in the position of being nearly everything in Orlando that Disney isn't, so therefore they need to make things that are more extreme and "cool" to the crowd they're trying to attract (12-30+ year olds).

So they're able to make one park that's super rich in theming, (IOA), a studios park that's no less detailed than Disneys Hollywood Studios, and a vibrant, colorful nightlife area that rivals the now fading Pleasure Island.

I don't know if this has been posted yet but check out Universal's newest coaster, coming in spring 2009 near Jimmy Neutron. What a coaster! I hope the mouse makes some major announcements soon!

Yeah, it was posted, in the appropriate Universal Orlando section of WDWMagic.

Snap!

The Mummy ride is 10 times better than anything Disney has made in a long time.....

I'n sorry, the Mummy is just a crappy version of the Indiana Jones Adventure with a roller coaster track. Not to say that it isn't fun, it just doesn't even come close to IJA.

The one at Uni?
Nope. Fully custom job, not another one like it anywhere.
Like Disney did with Everest and Vekoma, Uni and Maurer are working together to build something quite innovative. Good for them.

Look out! It's Lee vs. Corrus!

Precisely. I don't care about Universal doing this because I don't expect the same thing from them that I do from Disney. Universal can throw up whatever they want and it won't matter to me, but I expect Disney to put a little more thought into what they're doing. I'm sure I'll enjoy the coaster, if it was done at Disney that would certainly dampen my enjoyment of it.

13 years ago is a long time by theme park standards IMO. I've never heard it being compared to IJA before...there is really no other ride that combines a dark ride with a rollercoaster like the Mummy does (Test track is the closest I can think of)

I wasn't really comparing the ride systems, I was comparing them on the basis that they are both thrill rides meant to immerse you in the world of a popular action/adventure movie, which IJA far surpasses Revenge of the Mummy.

Understood, the budget far surpassed it as well

Hello don't you remember American Idol! Everyone watches that (that watches Hannah Montana and HSM.... uhg to the last, just a little uh to the first, and yes I know others watch it too.) and that is so much better that a land based on a classic novel/movie series that will fade away within the next five years, wait....:lookaroun

Oh....:lookaroun
