Wouldn't it be cheaper to just have the APs with your photo on it? Universal doesn't use the scanners since the photo is on the AP....the team member just has to look at it.

Cheaper yes, but not as accurate.

With the direction of the new ticketing/price combo's and choosing your length of stay tickets, it would not suprise me to see Disney at least fancy the idea of using something like those 'toll-passes' on highways... only geared to track and charge based off usage (the more you go, the less the charges...)

You know... west-central Florida has the "Sun-Pass", good for all state toll roads. Pay your balance and just fly right through.

Just a thought.

Whats the reason for the expected record-setting attendance next year?

1. The Happiest Celebration on Earth marketing promotion.
2. The improving economy, both in the US and abroad.
3. Since the economy has been poor the last few years, there is significant pent-up demand.....many people have been not going on big, expensive vacations the last few years, opting for shorter, cheaper vacations.....these people will be taking large vacations again.
4. The large amount of capital improvements at the parks
5. The weak US dollar has made international travel to the US a bargain......exchange rates are very favorable. (UK traffic should hit a record next year).

Yea, what he said.

Isn't international travel going to set a record for 2004 before being broken in 2005?

Well, this thread answered a question I had in my Trip Report (to be posted sometime later today). :)

Just read the article in the Sentinel yesterday that theme park attendence is up something like 9% this year, with MK taking over the #1 Attended Theme Park crown from DL, at something just over 15 million guests. Maybe now they'll get their butts in gear and work on Pop Century: Legendary Years?

The hotel market is still very saturated. Many large hotels were under construction before the economic downturn, and opened during the dark days.......I think it will be 2007....or VERY late 2006 before any new hotel projects open.....timeshares, on the other hand, were not effected as bad.

The current problem in the hotel market is that the peaks of high demand periods are very night, but the valleys are still very low. The rise in international (esp UK) is good, as they tend to travel more in the softer months (August and September)....they really help bring the valley up a bit.

I really think they need to work on Pop Century period. The place was packed last week and I think the number of rooms exceeds their service capabilities. Plus, the buses were horrible on several occasions. I don't mind a couple of problems, that's to be expected. But it was one thing after another. The guest services lines were long, check-in was long, express check-out packet was not on the door, food court lines and table availability was really bad several times. Like I said, a few problems is ok and I wouldn't worry about, but good service seemed to be the exception last week.

I will have to say this... the room was perfect, location was great, mousekeeping top notch and the food hot and good. So, I really think they packed to many rooms into the place and the staff, services and buses are overwhelmed during peak occupancy.

Sorry for the thread drift! :)

There isn't much than can be done for the half that's open. There really isn't more room to add any more stations. I've worked at Pop some and at times there are CM's at every station, but there's still a huge line.

That's why I wouldn't be surprised to see the other half completely built, but only add a couple more buildings.

We thought the same thing when we stayed there in July. We thought that the food court seemed too small for the number of rooms, and thus, guests staying there. Our feeling was that they struck gold with the layout for the All Stars, and were trying to one-up themselves. Unfortunately, I don't think they are going to better what they did with the All Stars. We didn't much care for the gift shop being almost integrated with the food court seating, also.

Paramount has installed metal detectors?

Last time I was at Carowinds in July '03 they didn't have any....I would be surprised if they did now. I would think that Six Flags might have 'em though.
In California, Paramount's Great America, and Six Flags Marine World and Magic Mtn all use metal detectors. PGA has been using them for years.

Cheers.

Just returned from the World yesterday and spent lots of time with a good friend of ours who is involved in doing the training for the new ticketing system. She confirmed what many of you have said--the construction is for additional turnstiles because the new ticketing system will be using the biometrics machines for all tickets. A few additional details that I didnt see anyone else mention in this thread--there will be a signature line on the backs of the tickets so the owner can sign the back and avoid confusion about whose ticket is whose. Also, research apparently showed that the new system will increase the time at the turnstiles by about 20%. That the reason for adding the additional gates. At least Disney had enough forethought to do that research and plan for it. I think everything else I know has already been covered by others.

We went to MGM a few times last week and every time out AP were checked diffrently. Once scanned and fingers scanned as normal, Once tickets only scanned, Once was not scanned at all just looked at by cm, Once got a stamp on AP with the date. As far as Busch Gardens in Willamsburg their ticket system for APs is terrible, Our finger scans always takes us two or three scans before the machines reconizes our fingers, I have never had any trouble with our APs for Disney as far as the Finger scans.

The way I see it is this- they could strip search everyone in the park, but if someone really wanted to get a weapon into the park, then theres nothing Disney could do to stop them.

I think that the security checks are just to make people feel safe (and, maybe theres some sort of insurance reason behind it?)

Airports are now guarded better than the white house, yet there have been tests done, and people (either a government study, or 60 minutes or something- I can't remember) have been able to sneak guns in, etc... There is no amount of security that can stop people if they really want to bring a weapon into the parks...
