Well we SWITCHED our vacation!!

We were charged a total of $0.00 by Spirit and Disney!

Instead of going tommorow until Tuesday (August 12-17), we are now going Monday until Saturday (August 16-21).

The price increase of teh flight was $600 and we don't have to pay one cent!!!

The lady from Disney on the phone was amazing , friendly, and in about 3 minutes changed our reservation!!

We're not going to get THAT much when it hits - this won't be a major storm, especially when it reaches Central FLA. Charley'll probably be around 105 mph when it hits southwest Florida, and will then significantly weaken by the time it reaches Central Florida. Lots of rain, wind, and we'll be on the Northeast side of it, so will be prone to weaker tornadoes.

We shall see. . .

I've heard that with the amount of land that needs to be covered for the storm to get from the coast to central FL, it will lose one category of strength leaving winds around 70mph. Also check out ther report here: http://www.wesh.com/video/3643960/detail.html#

Of course I'm hoping its not the case, but central FL hasn't really seen a storm like this in a long time, which is why I worry people are underestimating it.

The parks have never closed for any hurricane, including major ones.

As someone else stated, DisneyWorld did close for Hurricane Floyd. I was there then and the predictions were pretty intense. Fortunately, DisneyWorld wasn't really hit and the storm moved up the coast to the NY area and we got hit pretty hard here.

Being from NY, everyone was originally concerned about me being in Florida, when, in fact, I had to be the one worrying about everyone up here.

Only 70 more days til I'm Home!!! :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

I'm suprised more of us locals haven't chimed in yet to give you the real scoop....

In 25 yrs here in FL, the things I can assure you (and others will speak for me)...

A) Storm is 'most' intense from dead center to approx 30-40 miles in either direction...all others will experience wind gusts. (nothing to write home about)

B) Catagories 2 and under seem to drastically diminish within 2-4 hrs of being over land masses (fact) because storms need warm waters (80deg. +) to continue growth.

C) Biggest problems with any storm is not the winds and rain... It's the storm surge coupled with tides (this is what us locals...on the coasts...are most concerned about) All Northern Hem storms spin counter-clockwise. Here on the coast, we watch to see what side of the storm we are on to see where the winds will PUSH water and surge into the land, making it even worse.

Disney is perfectly situated in the state. High winds? sure. SUSTAINED winds of 70mph +? No way. It would have to be a cat 3+ for disney to think twice (as history has shown).

BTW... we're planning on having our usual Hurricane BBQ/parties here along the west central coast :D Come on over to Clearwater/St. Petersburg to join in the fun tomorrow!

Actually Floyd had winds around 130 mph and gusts up to 160 mph. Floyd was a category three and huge. It was twice as large as the average Atlantic hurricane.

That would have been winds in the orlando area :)

Ladies and gents...

If you do not live on the coast...or in the Sarasota/Ft. Myers area...

then don't sweat it.

Sweat when it reaches cat 3, but untill then, have a drink!

First rounds on me!

I believe Floyd was a borderline 4 when it was barelling down on us. We knew it would take a major turn to the north, but we didn't know if it would hit south florida and then turn, or start the turn and plow through central florida, or (what it finally did) turn and miss florida entirely. He was the first real big storm since Andrew hit down here, and everyone I know took it very seriously.

We "evacuated" to WDW during Hurricane Georges a couple of years before that. Once it passed through the keys (well west of us), we took advantage of the free turnpike and suddenly reduced rates at the Contemporary (hey, if you're going to evacuate, it's important to find a sturdy concrete structure) and made a weekend out of it.

*chuckles* Yeah I'm over in the same area and I'm not sweating it. I'm just hoping my Love's company choses to close. If he gets a day off out of it, that will be cool.

We actually had to evacuate from where we lived (in St. Pete at the time) last time around because of huge panicked worries and being in a low-lying area right on the Bay. Nothing happened.

Really, it might be a little windy and rainy, but Orlando will fare well through the pending storms. The serious threat, like mentioned by Bob, is those of us on the coast. (Especially those of us in Pinellas County since it's a peninsula itself and surrounded by the Gulf and the Bay.) The predictions at the moment are hitting further south then Tampa Bay and the major brunt of storms is to the east and south of the track, meaning it will fall short of really affecting central Florida weather.

So what about us poor souls in South Florida (from West Palm to Dade)? Can we sweat or can we have a drink? Well, either way I can't drink because I'm 19 but I can still sweat, so do we need to ?

You'll be fine.

Other coast...minimum 70 miles away from target area...and due east of the storms projected north-east track.

"Bottoms-up!" :slurp:

*laughs* While that sounds like fun, Rob, my mechanic told me that my car's on it's last death rattle and driving to Orlando would be A Very Bad Thing. Since I don't have anywhere near the $ for a new(er) car, I'll have to sit this one out.

But take pics! :)
