Tropical Storm Faye...

I am hoping for the green line, but thinking that I am not going to be so lucky. This will be my first hurricane/tropical storm as a resident of Florida. I also have my final walk through for my new townhouse scheduled for Tuesday, which is the proposed date of impact. :brick:

You might want to contact your insurance company, as they might not be able to write a policy until the storm passes. I know I had that problem once with getting insurance on a storage unit; I had to go back and get it after one of the storms passed.

Wow... I think there's absolutely no chance I won't be experiencing this.

My reasoning: Our flight gets into Orlando at 10 a.m. Tuesday. According to the NWS model, the center of the cone of uncertainty (OK, let's call it the cone of slightly more certainty...) is at Port Charlotte about two hours before we arrive. Now, Port Charlotte is actually where my sister is storing her stuff for college, so there might be some flooding of valuables. If the SHIP model sails off into St. Pete -- boom, direct hit on the college. Also, three of the models are leaning towards Cocoa Beach (though, over mainland first, so downgrading is likely), where we'll be staying the first few days of our vacation.

The irony in that last scenario is that I'm visiting a couple of prospective schools on the coast for a potential degree in meteorology. Talk about initiation. :lookaroun

I actually paid in full on my policy prior to there being any talk about Fay, as I needed proof of insurance for the closing. My mortgage company received whatever documentation they needed and everything should be in order for the closing. I am glad I didn't wait until now or this past week. I am sure it would have been harder to get a policy.

I love the Cone of Uncertainty?

Would you believe it's a category 5?

I was trying to explain it to my mom today, and she only just realized that "Cone of Uncertainty" was a real term used by meteorologists regarding hurricane tracks. :lookaroun

Now it's looking like it'll miss us completely... dang!

Oh, hooray... Embry-Riddle's closing their campus in Daytona Beach, therefore my tour scheduled for Wednesday will have to be Saturday. (I say "have to" because Florida Tech, as far as I know, is still scheduled for Friday, and Friday night we're supposed to be at Buena Vista Suites back in Orlando...)

I swear sometimes I should just keep my voice quiet so the fates can't overhear...

I survived hurricane Charley and it's not to be taken lightly everyone. It was very scary and not fun. And not having any power or gas for a week wasn't cool. :mad:If your a visitor to central Florida just be careful ,and stay indoors. International Dr. took a bad hit during Charley with down power lines and trees. Disney, Sea world and Universal also had some damage. I hope Fay just goes some where else. I guess there is a price to pay for living in paradise.

We rode out Hurricane Flloyd at the Yacht Club. They shut the parks down early the day before (turned out to be too early, but better safe...). When the Hurricane hit we were stuck in the hotel, on our floor. Disney set up bagged lunches for you to purchase near the elevators. It was a bit of a drag with a toddler. We wound up playing tag and hide and seek with some other families but security made us stop. If they advise you to prepare, listen to them. Stock up on beverages and snacks and things to do. The shops were closed and all of the restaurants/room service. By evening they set up dinner in the Yacht Club Galley as a buffet. But at some point they stopped letting people come down because the storm picked up again. They also had the bagged lunches for dinner. The bags were pricey, dinner was a little pricey but it was a good spread and the food was excellent. Again, if they're warning about closures, stock up! I have no idea how they handled things in the value and moderate resorts that don't have the enclosed walkways. The day after the Magic Kingdom was empty! It was raining but everyone was having a blast, including the employees. Disney also gave us Hurricane pricing on the rooms during that stretch (the airports closed 2 days before and didn't reopen until a full day after). Disney also gave priority to people already checked in, even if you were supposed to be leaving. So check with the front desk to make sure that your room is secure. And have fun!

big difference in intensity too charley was a cat 3 hurricane this will be a minimal cat 1 at best and if i remember correctly charley was a pretty fast mover as well as where fay is like 14-15 mph

Actually, Charley was a Cat. 4. It was a cat 2 up until about 45 minutes before it made landfall about 2-3 miles from my house...it JUMPED to a Cat. 4!

Thank You sooo much for this!! I am sooo tired of people saying, "Charley wasn't so bad."
No, it wasn't a Katrina, but that was bc it moved sooo fast. If it went slower, it would have FLATTENED my town. People all around me lost their homes. We had trees and poles down everywhere. We lost power for 2 1/2 weeks and had no water for some of the time. There were no stores, restaurants, gas stations for days. And even after that, it was limited. We had a 6pm curfew for weeks that was strictly enforced by armed guards. If you had no reason to be out, you were arrested.
I had a close friend that was taking refuge in a friends house...they were in the hallway with about 8 kids, and they watched to roof peel from the house. When the eye passed, they ran to the neighbors house for refuge. Maybe Charley "wasn't so bad" in other areas, but where it made landfall...Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda (my home!) it was bad. It was scarey and I don't want to go through it again.
So unless you were here when it happened, you have no idea how bad it really was!
