To my knowledge the pirates extended queue still exists by Indy, they just keep the doors closed.

If so, why wouldn't they use that space instead of clogging up the walkways.

This second pic shows why they built the enclosed area in the first place to get the queue out of the walkways.

It's still there, but rather small, and only used for the noobs who veer left instead of right when the queue splits.

Please tell me you're being ironic. Those "doors" are a wall. On the other side is the Indy queue.

After you leave Indy's entry temple, go through the zigzag, pass the drinking fountain, then start down the long slope with the exit path to your left, you are in the old Pirates extended queue. It went almost all the way down to the bottom, just before you enter the caverns.

No, it doesn't. It used to go way further back. I couldn't find any photos of inside the extended area, but I did find this that picture that I believe shows part of it:

That area is also part of the emergency exit route if the ride needs to be evacuated.
