Trip to the World with a First Timer: Sept. 8-12 Pre-Trip & Trip Report

so exactly two weeks from today i will be arriving in orlando and beginning my vacation in walt disney world! :sohappy:

this trip is more exciting than usual for me because i am going with my best friend from college and former roommate, maggie. we both graduated in 2008 from elon university (woo!). after graduation, i stayed in nc and maggie moved back to her home state of georgia. since graduating we have only seen each other once  and that was actually just this past may when she returned to nc to see her brother graduate from elon.

maggie_me.jpg

maggie and ashley (that's me) from the glory days of college. ahh...it's only been two years since graduating and i already miss it. good times.

so back in march maggie had mentioned that some of her friends had just returned from a vacation in wdw and they loved it. she has never been and she knows how much i love it so she asked if i would want to go with her and show her the world! ummm...did she really have to ask the question?! so immediately i kicked it into planning mode and we decided to go in september for value season and low crowds.

first we had to decide where we wanted to stay. maggie and i are both pretty frugal (i hate that word. let's say financially responsible instead) so i thought that maybe the values would be a definite for us. i had also suggested maybe doing a moderate or staying at the wilderness lodge since it is on the lower end price wise out of the deluxes. i was very pleased when maggie said she wanted to do her first trip right and we would splurge and stay at the wilderness lodge! i have never stayed here before so i am very excited to see what it's like. i also suggested that doing the dining plan might be a good idea and maggie was on board! (i love planning for someone who is so open to suggestion!) i figured that there would either be a room discount or free dining coming out after we booked the trip and sure enough, free dining came out for disney visa card holders (that would be me :D) and we got free dining. a financially responsible person's dream come true!

since this is maggie's first trip to the world, i decided to make her a "first timers guide to walt disney world" i put together a binder with information including the wdw planning dvd, free park maps, menus for the restaurants we would be eating at/considering eating at, disney trivia, park hours and a pair of minnie mouse ears! on her visit in may, we went over her binder and i showed her some shows i had on the dvr that were in wdw.

so now you know the planning process of how our trip came to be. now, on to the scheduled itinerary!

i am so excited for this trip and to experience seeing wdw with someone who has never been! i know i need to slow down from my normal pace and let maggie enjoy all the small things that make wdw so wonderful. its crazy, but i actually hope we have some wait times for attractions so she can see all the cool details that go into the queue.

i will be taking a ton of pictures while there and will try to post my trip report shortly after returning. thanks for reading!

I loved your report! I'm currently listening to Illuminations, so I feel like I'm really there.

My best friend went to WDW with us for the first time back in January and got hooked. I love taking new people and seeing the World through their eyes. :)

and he is touching me. like our legs and arms are touching, that is how close he is to me. well there was no way i was moving. i was there 40 minutes early! so the entire fireworks show, this guy and i look like we are boyfriend and girlfriend. ugh. it was ridiculous. and meanwhile, this family starts creeping up on maggie and the lady's are touching maggie's back.
Man!! I get rude with people when they close in like that. Yuck!! I'll just say, "Um, excuse me, but we've been here waiting for a while, could you please give us some room...?" The worst that can happen is they'll say no or give you a snooty look. But I can't stand some weirdo touching me like that. Ewwwwww.

and these are just too cute to eat. i wanted to get one but i would never want to eat it.

Mmmmmm, I want one of these!!

Just teasing you...I have found the same thing, as things I would like to buy in the parks, are at the resorts...I was at Kidani Village in June and it was pretty limited in what it offered, and it was all animal/jungle themed...Small in comparison to some gift shops...Jambo was larger and had more variety...not sure how WL was for you....

I am really liking the latest reports by you and blackthidot and disneygirl1..My last trip to WDW was very eventful but in a negitive way(my father had a major medical emergency while there) and I didnt have much of a vacation after that...so these reports take me back a lil....:)

the wl gift shop had a pretty good selection. at least, they had everything i bought  i'm sorry that on your last trip you had to deal with a medical emergency. its sad that as much as you want to get away from the real world while at wdw, that the real world stuff still happens. i'm glad that you enjoyed my report!

Loved the last installment! That totally was not oversleeping, tho! LOL! Looks like a relaxing final day.

Looking back, y'all did pack a ton into those 4 days. Pretty amazing, really.

So glad Maggie caught on to the magic even if it wasn't quite as much as we all have pumping thru our veins. There really is something for everyone at WDW if they just keep their minds and hearts open to it. Very cool. You did a great job being the tour guide. Kudos to you! :sohappy:

So when you going back and when will we have the next report to read???:wave:

i know it really wasn't oversleeping! normally i don't wake up until after 10 on the weekends. but in disney, i am so good at waking up early so me turning off my alarm but bad. i was so happy that maggie enjoyed it so much! i hoped that i was going to be a good tour guide so thank you for that! i'll be back december 10th - 17th! woo hoo! a whole week!! and my first trip at christmas time! i can't wait to see the decorations! hopefully i can get the report done before the holidays...probably won't happen though but i will try! :D

Yay! I just finished reading. I loved all the pics. I am so glad Maggie liked it! And I'm glad you loved Le Cellier!! It will always be my favorite. You guys really made good use of your time. You went all over!

I hate packing too, but it makes it a little easier when you have another trip planned!!:)

thanks tammy! you were a great help with this trip! and we both LOVED le cellier! it was delicious!

i love listening to wdw music! it helps take me back! it is cool to go with someone who has never been but i am looking forward to going with my bf in dec since he has been just as many times as i have. that way we don't have to rush to get things done. thanks for reading!

Excellent trip report! Congrats on converting yet another first timer. I really love WL, and I think that was a great choice for resort for a first timer. It seems like the two of you got a lot done for a relatively short trip. Oh, I think it is so funny that Maggie ate healthy food the entire time. That is completely against my cardinal rule of vacationing!

thanks for reading! i am so happy that maggie had such a great time and i agree that the wl was a perfect choice for someone who has never been to wdw before. and the september crowds (or rather, lack thereof) were essential in us being able to get so much done in only 4 days. yea, i don't follow the eating healthy thing in disney. the food is way too good to worry about being healthy :slurp:

Exactly why you need me there! Thursday nights is two for ones at the little bar in the mall where my daughter dances. A few moms go and have a cocktail while we wait. We always tease this one friend because she can never finish her second drink. So me and another friend always have to split it! :D
