The group at the production company told us which park and resort we would be reporting on. It made some sence when you think about it -- the extended family with young kids at the MK, the honeymooners at Epcot, the young adults at MGM. We were a little disappointed when they assigned us Animal Kingdom, but staying at AKL was enough for us not to argue! I felt bad when I saw the we were at AKL, another was at the Poly, another was at the GF, and then the largest was at Pop Century! But they were trying to showcase that new resort.

Welcome to the board. You are a minister? It seemed Disney was trying to be 100% PC and cover all the bases, except I did not see any Asians or Hispanics represented, or did I miss something?

Welcome to the boards from me and my mom (tigsmom)!!!

It had nothing to do with your family or any of the others who did the show, but having been to the parks many times, we kinda already knew all of this.

It's amazing how tame these posts have gotten since Dave came on the boards. Be honest people. Don't just blow smoke up this guy's ***. Sorry that Travel Channel and Disney cut out the good stuff, Dave.........they should have given each family a whole hour.

Hey Dave Welcome to these here boards!!! I enjoyed the show last night and while it certainly wouldnt contribute much to the hard core types on this board ( Myself included) it certainly would be great for a newbie to watch to get some great ideas as well as to get a taste of the parks and what they might like to do and see while in Disney. Not everyone can have a really experienced tour guide you know!!! Belle

I got the impression (and correct me if I'm wrong) that for the most part, the things seen, said, or done by the families in this show were not their own choosing. Disney picked. It became really evident when the Epcot family were purchasing their tickets. It seemed like the producers said to them "Ok, now go up to the window and buy your tickets and say something about how buying park hoppers is good because of the freedom they give you and they never expire. Annnnnnnd........action!" And as for them getting FP's to Mission: Space, that was Disney's way of killing two birds with one stone. Showing the FP system and a new ride in one segment. So, no, I don't think this is what the actual families of experts came up with. It was Disney's way of showcasing what they wanted showcased, but having the families doing it instead. Very wolf in sheep's clothing.

Was this more of the case, Dave? Or am I getting carried away? :p

Welcome to the board!

I enjoyed the program and also learned the little tip about the AK parade route from the show. Anytime we have a new Disney special, I'm happy.

One thing I thought was how tired you all must have been. All the groups went all day with few breaks-- I know I couldn't have kept up that pace! Then the MK family went to Downtown Disney too! No way, my butt would have been in the bed! I was happy to see Bob Sehlinger got a few tips in too. Good job--it looked like you all had a great time.

Are you kidding, the Epcot family slept in till 8:50, got a massage, rode two attractions at Epcot, and then had to take a break.

I think you all get what the Travel Channel and Disney were trying to do through the production -- even if you don't like it. If we weren't in it, we'd be making the same comments. But when you consider there is no WDWMagic Channel, you get a better idea of the demographics. Everyone here may know everything we talked about on camera -- but the majority of the audience did not. The Travel Channel is producing introductory programming to WDW because the vast target market are not experts. Makes sense, even though these shows are now a dime a dozen. It's part of the reason that old Disney Channel "Scoping the Parks" show died a slow death.

They could have given us each an hour (with all our "shortcuts" and dollar shaving tips), but that would have been contrary to the access these production companies get from Disney. These guys at Lightship knock themselves out -- they did all four families in about a week, and the day they shot us they were at our room at 5:30am and let us go at 11:00pm, and may have arrived home at 1:00. The next morning they were up shooting interviews at 7:00am.

Do you seriously think they slept in that morning? That the camera men and crew snuck into their room very quietly and just sat there filming them until they woke up? Of course not!

Assuming they didn't change the clock to read whatever time they wanted it to say and were filming it actually AT 8:50, then that means that couple was awake several hours earlier getting ready for the film shoot and the crew was in their room setting up everything. And again, just because we only saw them on two rides does not mean that's all they got done. It's just all that got aired. But I wouldn't doubt it if all that they accomplished was two rides, but keep in mind they probably had to ride each multiple times to make sure the crew got all of the shots they needed, and the time between takes of the same "Hi, I've got PS seating reservations" 12 times and resetting shots and things, they probably WERE exhausted and wanted that break.

And again, Disney probably said "Now you're exhausted and you want a break, so say that." Disney "scripted" this show. It's a glorified commercial and they had complete control over what was done and said.

I'm not ragging on you, because I agree, it kinda sucked. Just playing devil's advocate. :)

Well, I can only speak for my family (they kept us away from the other groups). We were asked about how we would plan a day at the Animal Kingdom. They wanted us to spend the whole day there with the Sunrise Safari, and I told them that if it was us planning, we'd never do a whole day at AK. We also didn't want to do the shows there (both are not a favorite for our teen boys). They looked our schedule and agreed. If you look at us at the Lion King show (which we first saw when the boys we small), you can see us "acting."

As far as our schedule -- you can see that our family believes in getting to the park early. This demonstrated the difference between the families. I would NEVER go first thing into Adventureland, and NEVER buy tickets at the gate. They also cut out many of our on-camera tips like getting there before the park opens, using our Disney Visa to earn free tickets, going through the Rainforest gate while the others line up, cutting through a path by the giftshop on the way to Dinosaur, taking the new bridge from Asia to Dinoland, etc., etc.

I like watching anything about Disney World even the planning videos!!! It does seem like they tried to cram alot into a one hour time slot. With four groups, they should have either made the show longer or in segements.

Just nosy

Dave--
How much longer did you get to stay at WDW besides the two filming days? Did you actually get a chance to enjoy all the things you would normally enjoy on a trip?

I said this on another thread, but I thought Dave's family's enthusiasm for WDW came through, and there was no way to cover four parks fully with multiple families in less than one hour, so I enjoyed the production.

The laminated individual schedules!  Thanks for that! My little binder now seems practically normal by comparison!

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, checked in at the AKL (where they gave us park passes and some Disney Dollars spending cash), and ran over to MK for the evening. Monday was all day at DAK and evening in MK filming. Tuesday we ran over for a morning in Epcot, at noon I went to the Boardwalk to shoot the interview (got a killer sunburn on the side of my forehead that not covered by my televangelist hairstyle), spent the evening filming the Dino ride after DAK closed. Tuesday, we spent the morning at MGM, and flew home in the early evening.

It was the most bizzarre schedule I'd ever done at Disney, but we considered it a "working" vacation. No real shopping -- very little swimming -- most of our spare time on E-Ticket rides. The good news is that we'll be back in 11 day from now for a "real" vacation.

Goodnes... working vacations. I've had way too many working vacations...

Except Hawaii... That seems like it was the last full-break-real-type vacation I've had... :lookaroun

Have fun on the real vacation - don't forget the sunglasses or we'll see you in the celebrity sightings thread!

Oh, I will have a good time. I'm not too worried about being sited if I can get a free coconut smoothy at Boma's. This 15-minutes is more than I've expected. Many emails and phone calls today. Ah, the life of an expanded-basic cable one-time co-star!

Okay, so I have to know. Do you really print out schedules for everyone in your party on all your Disney trips? My family rebels when I tell them which park I want us to go to because I've made a PS!

Thanks for the insiders view - I will watch the show again with a different "eye" knowing you were being supervised by Disney during everything you said and did. And thanks for the tip on the AK parade!

How long ago was this filmed?

Personally, I hated the show. All the families were way to fake. It wouldn't make a difference what they tell you to say, you also say what you want. Not to be offensive, but come, ponchos on the river rapids? Getting wet is what the entire ride is all about. Following a schedule, even if they gave it to me I wouldn't follow it. I could not stand any of the families, except the ones at the Value Resort. All it was is a home movie for each familily. I would not want to watch another one.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but that is how I felt about the show.

Hi Dave!

Welcome to the boards!

I must tell you - out of all the things you said and did I was the most impressed with the trip planning binder. We also organize everything to the nth degree but we keep ours in a folder. The binder blew me away. I knew I had to have one. Tonight I will be organizing all our stuff into the official binder. This make me very happy.

Dave, it's a pleasure to "meet" someone as about WDW as me.

Thanks for the great idea.
