Tramway project and security relocation at TTC.

Transfers to EPCOT via all modes of transport: (PROBLEM)!!! Guests will be screened before entering monorails at monorail resorts, guests will be screened before entering monorails at the TTC, guests will have already been cleared if they board a monorail from the Magic Kingdom. Since the monorails would become within the "secure zone" of the TTC, there will be no need to re-screen monorail riders when they arrive at EPCOT. Unfortunately, due to the current set up of the monorail unload platform, it will be difficult to separate pre-screened monorail passengers from arriving bus or tram guests at EPCOT. This problem is the reverse of what used to happen when people riding from EPCOT to the Magic Kingdom were screened twice. Thus, people transferring to EPCOT may indeed need to be screened TWICE (once when they board at a resort or the TTC, and again when they enter EPCOT). This could be solved by either re-routing the monorail's exit at EPCOT, or by simply reversing the station flow all together and boarding passengers through the exit. This would have the added benefit of allowing a screening area for the Monorail by using the Monorail's current huge exit platform area that was never used for other monorail connections. Since Disney was okay with making people go through screening twice using the old system, I have my doubts that they'll try to fix that problem here. Unfortunate, I've always hated the double screening and it looks like it's going to continue.

I'm just picturing this in my head but couldn't they set up security near the bus station and keep the front security for tram unload, keeping the monorail exit within the safe zone?

That's an option, though they don't always unload trams on that side. It's only when a heavy amount of guests are arriving from the bus side that they divert the trams over to the other side. Besides, the monorail exits directly into the path of the bus areas and moving the check point back past that would mean they'd actually have to stop using the tram stop for unloading all together and would need to permanently unload on the other side. That would mean they'd have to staff the bag checks on the other side, which are commonly just closed right now. I think it would create more problems than it solves.

I'm just thinking of the mess that a backup creates with the escalator if security is after it instead of before it. Maybe I'm off base here though.

Same thing with poly and grand - I can see the lines backed up right through the resort doors and then, well, everywhere.

I had the same thoughts on all three locations. It seems like there would be enough space on the platform, and as such I'm not as worried about backups at the Contemporary, but I also have not been there recently during the morning and do not know how crowded the monorail platform can be. Placing the security check before the escalators creates all kinds of logistical challenges because of the elevator bay, restrooms, and arcade and shops that are in close proximity.

As for Poly and GF - I just don't see any other options for those resorts.

Monorails should be a value added option IMO. This would help with their upkeep and possibly finance future enhancements to the transportation systems on property.
Yes! Disney needs more reasons to upcharge for what they always gave you for free! Great thinking!

Is there any security re-work being done at Epcot yet? Everything posted here so far seems to be opinion. I may have missed something.

For EPCOT, there's not much reworking needed. If they're comfortable making Monorail guests pass through security twice (like before with Magic Kingdom) then I don't see anything changing.

Nothing is free. Plus consider wear and tear etc. And they are already charging for the internal bus system. Add to that, eventually the monorails will be overwhelmed without a new system. Especially if they add more rooms on the MK line which is strongly rumored.

No
Might have to add a third one eventually anyway. Gondolas might also work here. Or a bus option during peak times.

When did you last go to WDW?

Would you two have any interest in doing a podcast together? I think it would be hilarious. Kinda like a point/counterpoint format, or in this case, a fact/fiction format. :)

I see it going something like this:
@jt04 : I just heard that WDW will begin using flying buses by 2020.
@marni1971 : No they are not.
@jt04 : Well, it's been widely rumored.
@marni1971 : No it hasn't.
Pure gold right there!!! :D

@Viget is asking about the poly, not the contemporary which I assume you are describing here.

I haven't seen a definitive answer on the poly question yet, but I agree with you that DVC members wouldn't be happy about closing that path. The worst case scenario seems to be that you might have to walk over to the tram security screening area if they don't put a dedicated check at the end of that path.
I'm not sure how they could reroute that path to push it through the new screening area, as it would lead directly into the path of the trams. It currently feeds into the ticket booths. I'm hoping this will mean a dedicated check for the path, as opposed to closing off the path completely.
