Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

There's an interesting thought. Using Mater's and the existing Midway Mania, plus the best guesstimate for Slinky, we come up with this;

Alien Swirling Saucers = 90 Seconds
Slinky Dog = 75 Seconds
Midway Mania = 6:15 Minutes

Total = 9 Minutes of total Ride Time for Toy Story Land
Take the ten year old TSM out of the equation and it’s sober reading.

I don't get you.

A new land with a total ride time of a few minutes?

Yes. That was the original purpose, to provide something SMALL, SHORT and ENTERTAINING (because it will be entertaining). That's the same reason that Storybook Circus exists in MK and Mickey's Toontown exists in DL.

Storybook Circus:
Dumbo= 1.5 min
Barnstormer= 59 sec

Mickey's Toontown:
Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin: 3 min
Gadget Go Coaster: 52 sec

It misses some good elements (e.g. a playground or a waterpad, a meet n' greet and shops) but it's not in desperate need of them. It has some flaws but they can be fixed later. But TSL was a great idea from the beginning and definitely NOT a failure.

Ok, but they took out a 45 minute Backlot Tour for less than 3 minutes of new ride. Thankfully, you’ll get to spend the remaining 42 minutes (or more!) waiting in the sun, so no harm done, right?

I can’t help but continually feel that Disney should have updated the rides they already had and then had these two lands and Mickey as new builds. Then we’d have a world class theme park.

1) The Studio Tram Tour didn't actually last more than 25 minutes. And it covered a much bigger area than TSL (that now will be part of SW:GE).

2) It consisted of a bad preshow and the actual ride had cheap objects placed here and there to give the impression that you are in a "studio". The only nice scene was the Catastrophy Canyon and it didn't last more than 3 minutes.

So to sum up. You now get a new land in an area that was previously occupied by a dull ride that had nothing more cheap props and sets and one short "real scene" and it didn't appeal to children (like pretty much almost everything in HS back then). TSL is a good replacement for this space and most people would prefer to ride the Slinky Dog Dash thab the Studio Tour.

About the other lands they do may need updates but this doesn't make them any less appealing.

At the very least, they could have added a dark ride that would take 5-7 minutes with scenes from all the Toy Story movies (but not a retelling). Slink Dog could have been designed to take up less space. Then, it would feel more like a complete land.

You forgot IMHO.

Since you are a newer member (welcome, by the way!), the one thing you will learn is what other members appreciate in an attraction/land/park. @marni1971 loves the older rides that Disney used to produce (and he knows pretty much everything about everything in WDW). They took numerous things into consideration: queue, length, capacity, aside from incredible theming/effects by Imagineering. There was an utter completeness to how the older Disney approached designing projects. When EPCOT Center first opened, it was filled with thought-provoking omnimover attractions that pulled people out of the summer heat and both entertained and educated them with rides that lasted from 15 to 40 minutes. It is more of a bang for your buck for the price you are paying for park admittance. Today, it seems in some respects that Disney at times employs Budgeteers as opposed to Imagineers.

I am very excited about seeing this land next month when we go back. I think that the fact there are 3 rides and a new QS is great! And the theming of the rollercoaster at night looks incredible. That being said, I can see some of the points that others are making. I would have loved more theming consistent with the original concept art that was presented at D23. There are some elements that were removed that I feel would have really completed the land. An air conditioned merchandise area and character meet and greets would also have helped a bit.
