Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

I really hope they put the money back into slinky. It's better to have one mediocre and one nice ride rather than two subpar rides IMO.

For those who have forgot just how disappointing the new version looks, let's go back to the concept art comparison:

The first one looks leaps and bounds more fun. It's more than just a coaster but also a fun tour of Andy's backyard, seeing all sorts of toys from the movies and a lot of fun sets (and according to the original description of it, things would be triggered and move, so there were some things that were more than just static effects).

There is nothing in the second piece of art. It's just so incredibly dull. And even what toys are there and the second launch, both looks kind of ugly with the red track (at least in the art they do). Not to mention the winding path that went through the coaster is gone. Things like that are just cool to have areas to explore and there to be lots of live kinetic energy around you.

As we all know the art is never gospel when it comes to what we actually get, but still it looks so lame and not really fun in the second. I could maybe understand them wanting to cut all the rock work for what should be a cheaper land, but come on, how much could a big plastic shovel cost? :p
I always questioned if it would get built the way it was in the original as it seems there is a lot of track going over walkways. But the trenches looked like they would have added so much to this ride. I wish they would add just one of the 3 trenches back.

The D23 version had multiple fiberglass figures around Slinky, some animated props and coasters aren't cheap cheap to build. Plus it had a free standing building for toilets, M+G venue plus shop. The new version has the shop, M+G and brand new toilet facility cut and most of the fiberglass figures were cut and most if not all moving props have been cut from Slinky.
So now there is no building for the toilets, they are just out there? talking about cutting cost.

Edit, I see someone already beat me to it.

According to rumors we are getting a new high capacity ride but it's simply replacing one that's already there so for capacity it's pretty much a net gain of zero.
There could be practical capacity increase with Mickey ride if they expect more people to ride it than GMR. I am wondering if GMR ever runs to full capacity these days? Just because it could get x number of people in an hour does not mean it does :).

(of course, much better option would be a serious update to GMR and new Mickey ride elsewhere, but hey...)

Spend some money Disney.
Actually, they are spending a lot of money. The real problem is how inefficiently it is being spent. It sounds like the new price tag is $250m (+/- $25m) and we are all applauding that since the original price tag was $400m. But in my mind this is as ridiculous as original estimate. Yes, they have cut ~30% of cost but frankly they've done the same with content, both in terms of quantity and quality. The number is still ridiculously high.

I think the main thing that people forget with the budget for the TSL is Disney probably included the cost of the demolition in it as well.

Inflating the price.

Yes and people here keep forgetting that....
We are still talking hundreds of millions of dollars :)

I am not in construction business so really do not know but I have hard time imagining demo to cost anything more than $10-$20m? And there is always some sort of preparation work, even if they started on a previously unused piece of land (clearing, drainage, etc). I wouldn't be surprised if in some cases it actually costs more if you start 'clean', especially considering Florida's swamps.

That's how I feel. I don't think including demolition costs is inflating anything. I was just stating that it's why BLT sat dormant for so long

When I saw the original concept art, I wasn't "wowed" by it but I got the idea--a boy digging trenches to run his toys through to make a rollercoaster in his mind, the kind of thing children do. Now it looks like a simple roller coaster with a few decorations.

I still can't believe Disney is going all six flags on us with this coaster that is continuing to be more and more unthemed.

I'll say it again - welcome to the new Disney *sigh*

Yes
Forgive me if this has already been clarified, (I'm not really in the mood to read 240+ pages to find the answer I seek,) but according to DPB TSL will take place in Andy's backyard. Why does it take place in Andy's yard? In the movies, Andy is all grown up and the Toys live at Bonnie's house now so shouldn't it take place in Bonnie's yard?

What do you mean more and more unthemed? The first concept art showed it themed to a certain level...then the second concept art that came out showed it less themed to a certain extent. So the theming only changed once (by looking at the concept art) unless I am missing a new piece of information???

Based on what was said at the D23 announcement of TSL and SWL it sounded like the new direction for the park was going to be immersive themed lands. I assume that Andy's Backyard was the best they could come up with as a way to tie these sorts of rides into a themed land. The land doesn't have to be set in the current timeline of the movies, there is no reason it can't be set around the time of the first movie.
