Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

Based on what was said at the D23 announcement of TSL and SWL it sounded like the new direction for the park was going to be immersive themed lands. I assume that Andy's Backyard was the best they could come up with as a way to tie these sorts of rides into a themed land. The land doesn't have to be set in the current timeline of the movies, there is no reason it can't be set around the time of the first movie.

I would have preferred to have a land based on the toys and an imaginary playtime scene. Something like the Old West imagination play scene at the beginning of Toy Story 2. That scene could have allowed for an Old West Woody's Roundup area too.

But if this takes place around the first movie then the TS3 characters in TSMM won't make sense. Come to think of it, the TS3 characters in TSMM don't make sense in the first place if TSMM takes place in Andy's room.

I guess TSL will just be a hodgepodge of Toy Story characters not bound by timeline cannonity kind of like the current Star Tours is with Star Wars.

Maybe Disney needs to quit releasing concept art.... because you know after it's built it's only half of what we had hoped or were lead to believe

See, thats the genius of concept art...there's never a guarantee that the finished product HAS to resemble it...but more just to give you a concept of what it could (but probably won't) look like.

I just want to point out that DHS/MGM never had a "heyday". Even in 1999, the whole working studio aspect of it was over and it was short on rides. Not that they've added more than ONE ride in the 17 years since (which is a disgrace), but the point is, the park was never great.
The theme, intimacy and feel were astounding though. So exceptional that it made the park special.

Agreed. I would play devils advocate to say it's to gain public interest in the concept. But being a marketer, these concepts and ideas should have been fully vetted prior to making them public. Who knows though, I've never worked for Diz (please call me!) so maybe this is part of their data gather process; that is to release these at a point they're comfortable and gauge the outcry and react accordingly, budget withstanding.

I wasn't aware of the New Fantasyland project nor a follower or member of WDWMagic at the time, is it common for concepts to be release and dramatically changed until actually "go time"? Knowing what I do about the history of Disney projects, things are changed even past the initial foundation/construction phase. From the original HM in DL though to NFL Mermaid, there's constant changes for various reasons. Mostly are actually subjective artistic revisions, some budgetary. Maybe the insiders and historians can chime in if not too far off OP.

Personally, I believe that Disney just doesn't think the casual fan will notice. They will notice after it is built and the land is meh, but casual fans don't dig as deep as we do here on this site.

I do agree that Disney needs to get their concept art straight before they release it. Showing the concept art for TSL and claiming it would be as immersive as Carland was a mistake. It wasn't a short post on the DPB, it was at D23 in front of the most intense fans. Then they post the new art on the construction wall and it is value-engineered. It is like getting a rug pulled out from under you.

Fantasyland concept art included Pixie Hollow if that tells you anything... ended up being the circus carnival junk

Fantasyland was the most dramatic change between original concept art and final product that I can remember. It was originally going to have two interactive princess M&G's which were replaced with the Mine Ride, and a Pixie Hollow area over where Storybook Circus is, but that was eliminated and the whole area changed to Storybook Circus.
