Disney Top 10 WDW mistakes

Each year, millions of people visit Walt Disney World. While Disney makes it easy to have a great vacation, people still make mistakes while planning and visiting the parks. You can still have a fantastic time, even with making many of the mistakes below, but why not avoid them, and assure yourself of a trip of a lifetime.
#10: Underestimate the size of WDW - Remember, Disney World is twice the size of the island of Manhattan. For the most part, you cannot walk anywhere, and when you can, it is a LONG walk. I hear people all the time who think Epcot and the Magic Kingdom are next to each other, that all the Disney hotels are within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom or that the monorail goes to all the parks and hotels. It takes time to go anywhere at WDW. Plan on at least 30 minutes to get from your hotel to the parks. Plan on everything taking twice as long as you think it will. Don’t assume this is Disneyland where everything is on one city block.
#9: Trying to do too much - Our typical trip to WDW is 10 - 14 nights. I see families who plan on staying 4 nights, but try to do more than we have planned in 14 nights. Their days are so packed and scheduled, they end up running their kids into the ground, they have no time to enjoy all the options Disney has to offer that you can’t schedule. Go with a plan, but make sure your plan leaves plenty of wiggle room for unexpected changes.
One related item, don’t force character meals on the kids. Plan one or two during your stay, your kids will get bored pretty quickly with them, if you do any more than that. You will be surprised how much they enjoy a nice dinner in the parks, without characters.
#8: Extra Magic Hours/Park Hours - I see so many families who show up to the parks at noon, having slept in. By far the least crowded time in the parks is the first few hours, show up when the park opens, it is the best time to be in the parks. If you need to take a nap, do so after lunch, when the parks are the most crowded, and then come back a bit later. Also, I see families who have no idea what Extra Magic Hours are. Make use of them, especially the night time ones, where the parks are open three hours later to Disney resort guests. While not all the rides are open, most are, and it is great to be in the parks at night when it is not crowded, they are beautiful. For the record, I avoid morning EMHs, they just seem to make that park extra crowded, and I usually show up at the night time EMH just before the park closes to the public, one of the benefits of park hopping.
#7: Disney Transportation - I guess I should say not making use of Disney transportation, but that was too long. Disney provides extensive transportation options, from buses, monorails and boats from your Disney resort to all parts of the parks. Disney also provides the fantastic Magical Express airport transportation. I am always shocked when I see someone rent a car, drive it from the airport to WDW, and then drive it to the parks. Learn and use the Disney transportation system, it will make your vacation much more simple and enjoyable.
#6: Booking directly with Disney - There was a study done last year by Disney, concerning booking habits and the relative success of the resulting vacation by Disney World guests. Not surprisingly, those who booked directly with Disney through the Disney World website had the worst vacations, followed by those who called Disney directly to book, with the best results coming from those who booked with a travel agent. Say it with me, “I will not book my family’s vacation directly with Disney“. There, you are one step closer to a fantastic Disney vacation. Travel agents, specifically Disney specialists, have gone through this many times before with their own families, and help thousands of families each year get to Disney successfully, they can answer your questions, help you with problems, make suggestions on restaurants and resorts and get you the best price possible. It is a win/win relationship, you get a better trip, your travel agent makes a little money. It won’t cost you any money, or take any more time, so why wouldn’t you use a travel agent?
#5: Planning last minute - Nothing says bad vacation like last minute travel. Disney does not ever have any great last minute deals, in fact, it is usually more expensive to book last minute as you pay full rate. You will also be limited on resort choices, as your preferred resort may be sold out. Also, waiting to the last minute will keep you from being able to make decent dining reservations. Plan ahead! I usually suggest to book at least three, if not six months or more in advance. Do your research, get the thing booked and let your travel agent worry about getting you any discounts that show up, there isn’t any reason to wait.
#4: Not using Fast Passes - I cannot count how many times I have been walking through the Fast Pass line (it seems like it is always on Space Mountain), and I get jeers or comments about “butting in line”. My guess is less than 20% of park guests make use of the Fast Pass system, or even know what it is. Use it, it will save you time like you can’t believe. Fast Pass is free, simple to use, and even on days when the parks are empty, you should use it. Head on over to Fast Pass Information, and learn what the Fast Pass is, where you can use it, and the process, it will be worth the 5 minutes of your time.
#3: Don’t do research - This is the one that really drives me crazy, and is basically a guarantee that you will have a horrible time. With the internet, and the number of Disney fan sites and information Disney provides, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to do a bit of research into resort, rides and restaurants, not to mention all those special things Disney does each and every day. If you are just starting your planning, here is what you need to do:
  1. Buy a decent guide book (I prefer the The Unofficial Guide to WDW
    ir
    ), then read it
  2. Find an online Disney forum and sign up so you can ask questions that you may have
  3. Find a decent Disney travel agent to help book your trip
  4. Find out park hours, Extra Magic Hours schedules and rehab closures while you are there, as well as any special events made available during your stay.
  5. Make dining reservations to fit with your park plans (more on this below)
  6. Re-read your Disney guide book
Now, you have to remember not to over plan as well (see #9 above). I typically have a calendar listing where we are going each day, the park hours, Extra Magic Hours and our dining reservation shown for each day, and I take it with us to the parks, the rest is open to what we feel like doing that day. Granted, I have been there a ton, you may want to add in notes on things to do, rides not to miss, etc.
#2: No dining reservations - Since the introduction of the popular dining plans at Walt Disney World, all of the restaurants, both in the parks and resorts, have become extremely crowded. Our last trip, earlier this year was during a very slow time, and every single restaurant was completely full, and they were not allowing walk ups. If you show up at Disney without dining reservations, plan on eating counter service meals every meal, as that will be your only options. In addition to simply making your dining reservations, you must make them as early as possible. As soon as you know you are going, get them booked and set, you can always try to make changes later.
#1: Staying off Disney property - I can see, back in the day before the value resorts were built, there may have been reasons to stay off property. Today, I can’t think of one. It isn’t any cheaper to stay off property, it takes longer to get to the parks, and you miss out on all the great perks Disney throws your way for staying in a Disney resort:
  • Disney’s Magical Express
  • Disney Transportation
  • Extra Magic Hours
  • Disney Dining Plans
  • Free parking
  • Disney service 24/7
If you want to assure yourself of a poor Disney vacation, choose to stay in some non-Disney resort, rent a car, and spend all day driving back and forth between your hotel room and the Disney parks. Uggh, pure torture.
I hope this top 10 was helpful in your planning. Of course there are more than 10 WDW mistakes, feel free to comment below and add yours to the list to help others planning.

I pretty much agree with most of it except for the following:

1. Character meals- I do not agree that most kids will get bored with more than one or two character meals. Sure, there are some families who do not want to do more than that, but we could eat at one everyday and my kids would never get bored with it. I actually tell my friends who are planning to do as many as they can....it sure beats standing in a 30 minute line to greet one character.

2. Disney transportation- Sure, Disney has great transportation system set up. Even with the complaints about long waits for buses at certain resorts, the system they have set up with the buses, monorail and boats is pretty amazing. But....if you have a car with you, it can be much less of a hassle to drive to certain parks (and DTD) depending on which resort you are staying at.

3. Booking with Disney- I think the author went a bit overboard with this. Travel agents are great for people new to disney or people who do not enjoy doing their own planning, but if you know what you are doing and enjoy the process, booking through Disney is fine. I don't have anything against travel agents! In fact, I have recommended Kingdom Konsultants to several friends. I just think the author made it sound like it would be a terrible mistake for anyone to book with Disney, which I disagree with. I also think they should have specified that it is best to use a travel agency that specializes in disney (such as Kingdom Konsultants).

Just my 2 cents.:)

I agree with you on everything, especially about booking with Disney. I would never book outside unless I really had to, booking with Disney is part of the experience.

I also disagree with the "Booking With Disney" part. We booked our last vacation entirely through the Disney website, with the exception of the airfare (thanks to a fantastic deal from Spirit). We had no problems at all, and when the discount codes came out, we called Disney directly and ended up saving A LOT of money. We had an excellent vacation!

Just someones opinion. Each to their own, hence it`s opinion. Each and every point is right or wrong depending on who you are.

We need time for things to happen.
I'd guess this list is mostly for Disney Newbees.

Most of the list makes sense, but I would agree that
Booking directly through Disney for me is half the fun.

Then again even some of the seasoned veterans around here come from the camp of
having someone else they trust, (like the fine crew at KK ) do all the leg work for them - makes their vacation more enjoyable.

But imagine what would happen if you did absolutely no research,
and booked with disney and got someone (as some of us have experienced) who was less than informed - how your vacation would turn out. :veryconfu

I agree with most of that except: I would never leave the park to take a nap. I can nap at home. I am at Disney World and I am going to make use of my time that I have there. We begin our days at park opening and leave after the fireworks (Usually). We do take a day off mid week, but usually end up back in a park late afternoon.....

We prefer the offsite. We can park at our door, have a fridge and microwave and newspaper included. It does not cost more because we have 3 in our room instead of 2 adults. We like walking out of a park to our car, getting in and being back to our room in l5 minutes and not waiting on busses that may or may not stop for us, have to stand at times and being crowded in.

my opinion....

I figure mostly everyone in the room knows what 'mistakes' not to make.:) Of course, I guess there are things that could always make your planning and stay at the world better.

I have to agree with the problems with Disney Transportation, particularly the amount of wait times we have from certain resorts (i.e. Wilderness Lodge is particularly bad) for the buses.

But I have to disagree with Booking Directly Through Disney. I have done so on several of my past trips and have never had the slightest problem in doing so. The people on the phone have been courteous and helpful if I call for arrangements, and the website also has been extremely easy to navigate and I have always gotten just what I needed.

The people that don't plan at all annoy me the most.

They really ruin it for themselves.

"OH MY GOD MOM I WANNA GO RIDE THE SUPERMAN RIDE AT DISNEY'S UNIVERSAL, AND I'M SO SICK OF WALKING AROUND THESE COUNTRIES AT THE GOLFBALL PARK THATS NOT EVEN DISNEY!" :zipit: :lookaroun

:ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL:Yeah. I hear ya. I really hate it when people confuse Disney with Universal! They think just because its all in Orlando, its all the same place.

Is the author of that list nuts?? Disney transportation is horrible. The last thing it will do is make a person's vacation more "enjoyable". :brick:

I think with any vacation, Disney or not, planning and flexibility are the key factors.
As far as transportation goes, we much prefer to drive our own vehicle, but I fully understand that not everyone wants to drive while on vacation.

The same goes for staying off-site. We absolutely love renting houses off property - we save a lot of money that way, the kids each have their own rooms, we have our own pool, so we're not swimming in someone else's diaper dooty. But I know lots of people prefer to stay on site.

To each his own, it's all good!:)

I disagree with the #1- offsite can be just as "magical" as onsite. We have done both, and they both have their pros and cons. We prefer to pay less, have bigger accomodations, drive our own car (we never have to wait for a bus, stand in a long line at closing, or get crammed onto a crowded bus), and have less expensive dining options by staying offsite. We always feel the magic of WDW, whether we are sleeping on property or not. YMMV of course.

Depending on where I'm vacationing, I will often opt not to drive but use cabs or other public transportation instead. Usually in big cities like New York, or San Francisco, where the public transportation is great, I opt not to drive. In an ideal world, it would be great to leave the rental car behind while visiting WDW. You wouldn't have to worry about parking, you'd save money by not paying for a rental, etc. But unfortunately, the reality is that Disney transportation is just terrible, disorganized and unpredictable (referring specifically to the buses, not the monorail or watercraft).

I agree with most everything except with booking with Disney and the Disney transportation system. I love to book with Disney because I am a planner and I like doing everything myself.

We have found that while we love using the Disney transportation, we can normally get around quicker in our own car. So, we use both. We always drive to the parks in the afternoon because it is much easier and faster to get back at night. I like that we have the option though, it makes planning the day much easier.

It isn’t any cheaper to stay off property

This is just factually incorrect, based on my experience.

it takes longer to get to the parks

And this is in the running for just plain wrong...especially since he/she suggests using Disney transportation if you stay on property. It really depends on where your hotel is.

I can agree to most of this:

#10- I helped a co-worker and her family plan a trip to Disney World. Her husband thought that they'd be able to walk from their off site hotel to all the parks. I had to really work to prove that they were not going to be anywhere near the parks and that it really would not be safe to do so.

#8- We try and use Disney Transportation as much as possible, but as many others have said if you have a rental car you can: park at the theme parks for free, and get to where you want to go quicker than having park or bus hop.

#6- We have tried booking through AAA and other sources and we thoroughly enjoy booking directly with Disney. Granted we now are DVC members so it's slightly easier. We also learned not to buy our park passes at AAA because they almost always have a hard time activating the passes. If you do get them from a location other than a Disney Store or at the parks/ your hotel, bring your reciept with you.

#4- I'm still AMAZED at how many people don't use fastpass. But I still think that off site guests think that it is ONLY for onsite guests and it's not true. I've even stopped a few people who insisted that they couldn't use it because they were not onsite Disney guests.

#3- Agree, agree, agree. That pretty much sums up the entire post right there. Some just don't want to do it, and I guess that's fine. But we're all biased.

#1- It can be much cheaper to say off Disney property and there are many testimonials to that effect on this very board.

I had to help my uncle plan a last minute vacation to WDW. They thought they could just go up to any restaurant and eat there. I had to do some research to assist him on trying to enjoy the parks last minute. He tried to call Disney Dining to get any ADRs with no avail. But he still had a great time.
