Toontown is Pitiful

Just for a confirmation, I've also heard this rumor, and that whole corner of the MK is in for a rehab. (Not at the same time of course):D This includes the area of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mickey's Toon Town Fair, Ariel's Grotto, the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway, and Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. It's a huge area, and there'a a lot planned. :)

I don't think Toontown is as bad as you guys are making it out to be. It's certainly no Frontierland, but it does have more to do than Liberty Square, and it's as detailed as the other lands in the Kingdom.

Improvements:
- The walkways do need to be widened. Either that, or another walkway needs to be created (Maybe from the Town Square area to the land's entrance?). Considering how much stroller traffic we have here, the paths aren't nearly wide enough.

- A big attraction needs to go in the tents. It doesn't have to to be Roger Rabbit's Spin, because that would be a clone (we want something original, right?) and it doesn't fit the country theme of the land. And it can't be a 3D movie or walkthrough exhibit either. :) I think we'd like a boat ride or a simple dark ride. Perhaps they could take the layout of Superstar Limo over at DCA, and use characters instead of celebs (I believe that this was discussed as a possible conversion over there).

- A possible conversion to Toontown instead of Toontown Fair. While I like the unique feel we have, it's tough to expand on, and it's a little tougher to relate to.

Overall, I think the current version of Toontown Fair is a lot of fun.
- Goofy's Barnstormer is off the shelf, but it's still fun and it's also well themed. I frequently visit this ride towards the end of the day and ride over and over again (little to no line).
- Mickey's and Minnie's houses are fun to walk through. They're nothing significant, but they're fun to look at and interact with.
- The visual gags around the land are a riot.
- The current state of the land is much better than it was when Goofy's Barnstormer was actually a farm (anyone remember Minnie Moo?)
- Donalds Boat is fun to watch. There are a lot of visual gags and details to look at, plus it's fun to see parents and adults try to stay dry in there.

Minnie Moo was fantastic. Grandma Duck's farm, those were the days dude! Man I wish we heard more from the lesser known characters, but I won't start on that again.

With all this talk comparing DL's and WDW's respective Toontowns, here are a couple of maps I have of Toontown from a proposed Disney theme park I have been designing on the Imagineer forum. The first map lists the rides and attractions, while the second lists shops and restaurants.

http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/showphoto.php?photo=6820

Here is a list with descriptions of the rides and attractions which can be found there:

1.) Chip 'n Dale's Treehouse
2.) Disneyland Railroad Station
3.) Donald's Boat: This boat sits on real water, not a blue plastic pad like the other Disney parks have!
4.) Goofy's Barnstormer
5.) Goofy's Gas: much like its Disneyland counterpart; with restaurants, public telephones, and Goofy's Toon Up Treats candy stand inside!
6.) Jolly Trolley
7.) Ludwig Von Drake 's House of Genius: basically an interactive learning area themed to Ludwig Von Drake's laboratory.
8.) Mickey's House
9.) Mickey's Movie Barn: much like its Disneyland counterpart; with the Prop Department (where Mickey's props and costumes are stored), the Screening Room (where clips from Mickey's cartoons are screened), and Mickey's "meet & greet" area, complete with photo and autograph opportunities!
10.) Mickey's Toontown Fountain
11.) Minnie's House
12.) Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin
13.) Roger's Fountain
14.) Scrooge McDuck's Money Bin: play area based on Scrooge McDuck's immense money bin. Also a treat just to visit and look at!
15.) Toontown City Hall: primarily a character greeting area, with three different rooms offering guests the opportunity to meet various Disney characters! Similar to WDW's Toontown Hall of Fame, but set inside a City Hall building instead of a huge tent.
16.) Toontown Courthouse, featuring Roger Rabbit's Courtroom: a 3-D interactive cartoon along the lines of the cartoon at Mickey's Philharmagic (animation-wise), where Roger is the judge and YOU in the audience are the jury!
17.) Toontown Fire Department
18.) Toontown Post Office: similar to Disneyland's, where each character has their own mail slot, where you can hear them say something upon opening them!
19.) Toontown Theatre: presenting Mickey's Toontown Show, a lively musical comedy much like the former Mickey's Starland Show which ran at WDW during the late 1980's and early 1990's.

And here is my list of shops and restaurants (map enclosed below):

http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/showphoto.php?photo=6831

Food and Restaurants:

A.) Clarabelle's Frozen Yogurt
B.) Daisy's Snack Wagon
C.) Dinghy Drinks
D.) Goofy's Free-Z-Time: Set in a vacation trailer parked on Goofy's Wiseacre Farm by Goofy's Barnstormer, which sells large frozen slurpy drinks.
E.) Huey, Dewey, and Louie's Goodtime Café
F.) Mickey's Trailer
G.) Pluto's Dog House: serves hot dogs, chicken nuggets, french fries, cookies, and Pluto's Cripsie Treats (basically Rice Krispies treats shaped like dog bones).
H.) Toon Pop: a popcorn stand serving both regular and caramel-flavored popcorn.
I.) Toon Up Treats: Once again, this is a candy stand inside Goofy's Gas.

Shops:
1.) Gag Factory
2.) Toontown Delivery Company
3.) Toontown Five and Dime
4.) Toontown Fire Station: This shop sells a variety of 101 Dalmations toys and gifts, as well as Mickey Mouse firefighter souvenirs. Toontown Fire Station basically sells what is sold at WDW's Main Street fire station, which seems to have turned into a shop as opposed to a turn-of-the-century fire station. (The MS Fire Station in my proposed park still has the antique fire engine and other firefighter equipment which was taken out of WDW's fire station)

I find it odd that WDW's Toontown would have so little to it, especially since WDW is the largest and most visited of all the Disney theme parks! IMHO, Disneyland's Toontown was built so much better just to get more people to come to Disneyland! Tokyo Disneyland also has a very elaborate Toontown , in fact bigger and a little better than Disneyland's!

The Toontown in my proposed park is basically a combination of the best features from each park's Toontown, as well as the standpoint that my park is built in the somewhere in the U.S. (due to familiarity with the culture and the fact that it would be nice to have another Disney theme park somewhere close by!)
As far a location is concerned, logically, I'm learning towards someplace in the Central U.S. (particularly with a warm climate, such as Texas) or possibly even Hawaii, which would be a fun place to have this park, IMHO!

If anyone has questions, comments, and/or suggestions, please fell free to post! :)

Kent, nice! i like the layout off it in comparison to WDW's current layout. your's is much more 'town-ish'. would you say that it's possible for WDW to put in something similar to your proposed Toontown...that is, if they scaled it down. in other words, do you think it would fit in the space alloted them. i think it might. i mean, if they used the 20,000 Leagues area i think they would. and they would definately have plenty of space if they took out the speedway.
nice plan! i think it could work in WDW!

i guess that's fair enough.....though, haven't you guys already taken over the Odyssey? how bout we split Epcot? you guys take FW, and we ladies can take WS....and of course, we can intermingle. and that way, we'd both have 1 1/2 parks each! :D

sorry to post 3 in a row, but just wanted to comment on this....

Ariel's Grotto badly needs some refurbs! the paint's rubbing off, and it seems like when i was there in June, there was some graffiti on the inside cave wall...makes me wonder if Disney even looks for this kind of thing anymore!

and, are they thinking of removing Cosmic Ray's, or just updating it? cause they'd be foolish to get rid of it...it's much too popular (and my sister's head would explode). but it could definately use some updating...inside and out! parts of the outside still look a little too 70's, and the inside looks a little too 90's.

Actually, my Toontown wasn't planned for WDW-- I designed it for a proposal for a new Disney theme park (Disney already has parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo, and Paris; with a Hong Kong park scheduled to open next year) if/when they ever build a 6th park. I have dozens of different maps/proposals for this park posted to the Imagineer forum. Just thought you'd like to know! :D

um, yeah...i know all that. i was just saying that your version of Toontown could probably work in WDW. i wasn't saying you had proposed it for WDW or any other park...just that it could work there. :)

i've been wondering about that too! but i wasn't sure how people could get to the other side. i thought of a bridge, but i think it'd have to be too tall. and a cross walk could be really dangerous.

So tunnel under it....a nice, roomy, enclosed walkway just before the tracks that dips down and back up. If you have enough room, you could make the dips so subtle that they're barely noticeable.

(Yeah, I know it costs more to dig than go through or over something...just a thought.)

hm, yes...a tunnel. always a possibility! even though i'm sure it'd be super expensive, i think it'd probably be more practical than a bridge and definately safer than a cross walk.

Hi...

Yes...a tunnel is reasonable...that's what they did in the Splash Mountain area. Go under the tracks and leave the station above!

To answer the earlier question, Yes there is room beyond the train station for a substantial addition to Toontown.
Getting to it would be tricky.
A tunnel is what they did at DL, but that was in a spot where the tracks were up on the berm. Same as Splash.

Thanks Lee...good info. You're right...the RR station in ToonTown is set lower than the rest of the terrain so maybe a bridge would be a better way to go. Hey, ya never know...someone in the Disney Ivory Towers may read this and make it his/her own idea.

hey, tramp...i had forgotten about the Splash Mtn. queue area being under the RR Station. i guess i've just never thought of it because Splash was already built on my first trip to WDW (my first was summer 92'). :)
