Seriously, after the 50th there's no excuse not to close Space Mountain for a full refurb/rebuild. If they can have Splash down for months at a time or Big Thunder, they can definitely be without Space for 12-18 months when they have a brand new E-ticket built next to it.
Yeah after TRON opens it would be a good and reasonable time for a Space Mountain refurb :)

Current, popular "Crazy Mouse" coaster traveling around at fairs:
View attachment 239864

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Crazy Mouse coaster just that there's two different structures for two different reasons.

Wow, who know they tore that ride in Dinoland USA down every night... Now if they could just forget to put it up the next morning.

Could be the difference between 60's aeronautic design and 2000's design. The second deck hump was a revolution but not really practical in today's world so they have the complete up and down to avoid changes in exterior skin. Manufacturing techniques have advanced as well. I don't think aesthetics really played into either.

The 747 being taken out of service has nothing to do with its design or aesthetics. It's a damn shame, too, because they are still very functional aircraft. And, unfortunately, I will not have the pleasure of flying on one before they are retired. :grumpy:

If they ever rebuild SM's track (doubtful they'll let it rot and replace it), would you support them changing the layout?

I'd support them buying an off the shelf junior coaster (x2) so long as it comes with upgraded tech including speakers in the cabin, new digital effects, etc. I'm no purist, well not on this attraction anyway. It's classic sure but I don't think a complete gutting and replacement would really negate the classic vibe. I'd rather them bring in a newer coaster vs more rebuilding; keep the layout or change it. Makes no never-mind to me so long as they bring it up to standard and return SM to the family friendly headliner anchor attraction it's supposed to be within Tomorrowland.

I was told some stories about Primeval Whirl from someone who helped install them. Basically, WDI bought those Reverchon spinning mice based on one thing: the cars appearance. When they received the rides, they had to spend millions just bringing it to "will last a few years under Disney operation" level by changing all the nuts and bolts. Alas, Disney did not learn from their mistake as they ran into similar issues with Crush Coaster in Paris. They had to upgrade most of the components on that ride so they would last Disney 365 days, 9 hours minimum a day minimum operation.

This is wild speculation but part of me wonders if they let SM fall into enough disrepair that after Tron is built they just shut it down (leave the structure for a decade or so, of course). Tron is the "new Space Mountain" and I've thought Tron was like "Space Mountain v2 at the same park", which always struck me a bit odd, plus it's placement.

I was excited when I initially read that Tomorrowland was getting some love earlier this year. After being there 2 weekends back, it looks as though "love" meant:
- painting the rocks out front blue
- closing Stitch and replacing with a M&G (probably for the better)
- repainting Space Mountain and adding some RGB LED lights to it (which is welcomed - it looked a lot better)

They don't really have to do anything, though, as ticket sales are still solid. Maybe they could raise the price for entry.
This is why I thought a move to Epcot was in order. Have a brand new "Best in the World" Space Mountain built next to Mission: SPACE as another anchor on that side of that park. Then you could have Tomorrowland by the home of movie based IP attractions including Guardians and Tron.

Yeti working or not, doesn't affect ticket sales. Why fix it? (current management's thought process).

The current management has made it so bad that Disney literally doing anything to their parks (any sort of improvement) is met with awe and a, "It doesn't matter if it doesn't fit... It's an improvement! What are you complaining about???" You can see that with nearly any recent thing that has opened, will be opening, or changed. They could put another Frozen ride where Stitch is (was) in Tomorrowland and people would laud it as finally Tomorrowland is getting some love/improvements. People would line up for it out of curiosity and everyone would pat themselves on the back about how right it was to put Frozen in Tomorrowland (because at least it's something).

I hate to say it, but they (management) are right. You can starve your customers of what they want and then if you produce something/anything people will clamor for it.

Think about The Force Awakens. It wasn't a particularly good movie. The problem is that it had been so long since a good Star Wars movie (1980s) AND I, II, & III sucked so much that literally anything that didn't suck as bad as I, II, or III would be thought of as great. I thought the same thing when I walked out of the theater until, a bit later, it dawned on me, "...it really wasn't that good. It just didn't suck like the rest." It's a pretty low bar to set: It doesn't suck / continue to suck.
The Yeti should have been fixed prior to Pandora. With the huge draw that Pandora is generating it would have been nice to have something substantial refreshed on the opposite side of the park. This has worked before with Diagon Alley and Transformers and Disney is looking to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway to do this when Galaxy's Edge opens. With the latter, they would have been better suited with MaMRR as a new build and a refreshed Great Movie Ride as an additional draw.

It's weird because they moved CoP across the country, but they wouldn't move it down the street (it'd be a better fit in Epcot).

It really would, and would be a great addition to one of the Communicore buildings with a fleshed out Walt Disney Museum and historical section of Walt Disney and the World's Fair... that would make an engaging brilliant pavilion...
And then Small World at the very center of the lake esplanade...creating a visual gateway to the countries of the world, with stadium seating for Illuminations built into the back of the building facing the lake... That would make total sense...

I hadn't thought of that but you're right. It really would be a great fit. It would also free up room in the MK for other Fantasyland-like rides and you could argue, Small World doesn't really fit Fantasyland (though I know we're all used to it being there).

Fantasizing a bit here: If you removed IaSW and Pinnochio's Haus then you can open up Fantasyland to that whole back area up to the tracks. That could be a neat little enclave.

CoP in one of the Communicore buildings would be fantastic.

I think a lot of people have felt that Moving COP and IASW to Epcot makes the most sense. It benefits BOTH parks and gives them a lot of room and ideal situations. As one poster above noted with IASW, perfect gateway to World Showcase, perfect place to create seating for illuminations. COP as the centerpiece of a Walt centric museum, full of facts and history. Then use the empty space in TL to flesh it out more in line with Tron, a new Space Mountain cleaned up and refurbed. I know its basically the same type of ride as TSM but move Buzz to TSL and put another futuristic based attraction there. Clean up the TTA to fit the new attractions. If we must have the speedway, clean it up and redo it to an autotopia or Cars theme. A win win for BOTH parks. The area vacated by IASW and possibly Pinnochio Haus ( if they build the Hanuted Mansion restaurant PH could go away without an issue.) could be used as a gateway into the Beauty and Beast ride or a ride based on Tangled or other IP that fits fantasyland. Go old school and do a couple of smaller attractions based on classic disney movies. The optinos are endless. But, is there $$$ for it and would the powers that be see a benefit not only to the guests in each park, but, the companies bottom line as well.

Moving it's a small world and Pinocchio's would allow them to put in the Beauty and the Beast ride, add Frozen to Fantasyland (where it belongs) and possibly a smaller scale Tangled attraction as well. We operate as if the Magic Kingdom doesn't have problems because Epcot and DHS have much bigger problems, but MK is a park that is in need of a refresh and additional capacity. It's a Small World has a high hourly capacity but the space that it's on could likely generate an even higher ride capacity across multiple attractions.

Where would you put IASW at Epcot?
