Considering we're getting the stupid Groot overlay in Small World, I wonder if that's the start of an ongoing trend of "updating" classic attractions.
There was a tweet around the time Groot was announced that said more IPs were coming and that also said one of WDI's goals for TDL was the replacement of Splash Mountain. I'll have to refind that tweet.

I don't believe this rumor. Why would TDR replace a ride that fits in so well with its Critter Country? And causes absolutely no controversy in Japan? (Although the Splash Mountains in the U.S.A. didn't really cause any controversy either, except to pinheads, certainly not with park guests). Highly doubtful TDR would replace its excellent Splash with the laughably bad U.S. PatF conversion, or with their own version, given that the PatF IP revolves around a sub-par film with only one good scene in it. And that the Japanese public feels no enthusiasm for. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

If what I'm hearing is correct, Disney is willing to fork over the money to replace Splash in Tokyo now. The snag before is that Disney wanted Tokyo to pay for the conversions in both WDW and TDL at the same time since the two rides are extremely similar.
