Every single restaurant in the United States expects you to tip.
If you aren't tipping when you eat out because you don't think servers deserve it (because you're bagging your own leftovers?) then trust me, you're making a lot of servers upset on a regular basis everywhere you go. Sounds like you don't really care, though.

I've worked at a restaurant where the owner has said something to the customer about their tip. They were cheap and he asked if there was a problem with the service, when they said no, he gave them the speech about how this is how the servers make their money, etc.

Yes; however, servers do in fact make less than minimum wage, correct?

If you want to be more clear, restaurants I go to often like Red Lobster, I always request the same server and she gets an amazing tip. But if it some place I will never return, a $1 or $2 is suffice.

Housekeepers are making more than minimum wage.

I've personally watched managers and servers chase people down to ask why they left little to no tip, and I've watched managers go on tirades about cheapskates that they don't want to ever come back. Skipping out on a tip is a bad idea.

This is true lol. However, at the end of the day I do not think a tip outweighs business. To this day a manager has not chased me down and I would actually love that to happen but I have not been so fortunate.

You mean every table service restaurant (not counter service or food truck).

So you are saying that you tip like crap, but only if you won't give them a chance to spit in your food for it? Hmmm, I wonder why you only tip poorly at places that you do not return to. Is it because you know what you are doing is wrong, and a jerk thing to do? You just keep making yourself look better and better.

I had a lovely new kitchen table delivered yesterday. I tipped the delivery men $10, a modest tip. I'm probably never going to order furniture from that store again so I probably should have kicked them in the shins and told them to get the hell out of my house.

I am sure you were charged a delivery fee?

I don't think fixing something is a service. Doing something for someone else is a service, cleaning, serving, cutting hair, etc. Fixing a problem with a computer is like fixing a washing machine or a car. There is a difference.

Sorry, but pretty much every IT person I've ever known from tech to CTO would disagree with that statement. They most certainly see their labors as a service to both individuals and the organization.

Basically it comes down to this. If I skip out on a tip, will I get arrested for not paying the waiters wage? No I will not. No where in the US will that happen. Tipping is not mandatory. Tipping is for rewarding those with great service a nice bonus and to those with poor service, a way to rethink why they got a crappy tip. I also have never been banned from a restaurant for not tipping. If they do not like what they are getting paid. Get a new job. No one is forcing them to work there. You make bad decisions in life that prevent better pay, than that is their fault, not mine. I will not tip out of pity. I tip because they earn it.

No, you will not, because tipping isn't generally the law. It's just assumed that people are decent human beings who pay 18-20% tip if they receive the service they expect. If their service is poor, speaking to the manager gets results; simply not tipping doesn't communicate anything but "I'm a cheap jerk". Tipping isn't for "great service", it's for receiving service.

Correct. if they're doing their job correctly, tip. If you aren't tipping people who're doing their job correctly, then you shouldn't eat out.
