Confirmed they started working on the story of this back in 2018, so early stages / concepts for a story for this ride started back in 2018.

I think the general consensus is that, prior to 2020, the Princess and the Frog had been considered as a potential Splash Mountain retheme for a few years and that some concepts had been created, but that the pandemic and the protests and the petitions accelerated the timeline and moved the retheme from something Disney was working on in the back burner to priority #1.That's already confirmed in the mind of everyone who isn't refusing to believe it for... reasons. I highly doubt that this would change their minds.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the ride at nighttime. It looks gorgeous with the lighting and has the potential to be a Pandora-at-night like draw for that section of the magic kingdom if what we get matches those renderings.
