This also brings to memory the Disney Sing-Along Songs series released on VHS (later on DVD) that ran from 1986 through 2006. It incorporated the "bouncing ball" that helped us sing along. The very first volume was titled "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" which featured the song and clip from Song of the South. In fact, that initial release happened to promote the 40th Anniversary re-release of the movie in theaters. That release brought in $37,459,346 ($87,914,438 in today's dollars) in the box office. I believe it was only re-released domestically.

For comparison, PatF only grossed $104,400,899 ($125,699,042 in today's dollars). This, of course, doesn't take in account pre-1986 earning for SotS which in today's dollars is over $1B. Worldwide, PatF pulled in $324,576,765 in today's dollars.

Note: All numbers above are theatrical release only and don't account for video sales which I'm not sure will be readily available since SotS was never released in the US on video.

This brings back a lot of memories!

So aparently Zip A Dee Doo Dah was removed from the entry music
Just saw that as well. I mentioned this before on the forum, and that’s how I had a strange dream a while back where I was watching someone’s Instagram story of splash mountain where Zip A Dee Doo Dah was turned off, and all that you could hear was the clicking of the pneumatics in the animatronics, and people talking amongst themselves about what was going on. In the events of this dream, about an hour after this Instagram story premiered, the site that shall not be named made a story on it, similar to how they just made a story on how the music had been removed from the esplanade.

I still am holding out hope for the end result of this reimagining will be a quality product for a new generation, but I really think it’s just silly to remove the song from the entry loop right now unless/until there is a quality replacement in place going forward.

Unless this retheme is now planned sooner than we’ve all been led to believe, I think it’s appropriate to give this a proper send off for everyone that grew up with the ride and wants to rekindle the memories of this classic attraction.

Otherwise it just kind of strikes me as borderline pandering and cheap corporate expediency.

Do you think Disney really believes the claim that "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" is based on a song from a minstrel show that has the word "Zip" in the name, or are they just pandering to the people who believe that?

Wow this is really happening. Just came here to share this. Ridiculous and Sad.

Could there be a silver lining here? While sad if its true, could it be more indication that DLR is on the verge of reopening? Otherwise why remove it now if not reopening anytime soon, again if true. Anyways just saying....

The loop plays in Downtown Disney, so I don't see this being a sign of a close reopening.

I take it as a sign that Disney has to keep some audio engineer busy during the shutdown and tossed them this bone.

Not for me. ☹

The instrumental version is racist too ?
Depends on the point of view. But I'm not here to get into all that.

This is obviously always going to be a sensitive subject for a lot of people on this board, including and maybe especially for you. I was just trying to find maybe some silver lining in light of this otherwise sad news. And maybe it doesn't mean anything all. But its curious they are doing this now as opposed to when DTD and the esplanade first reopened. To me it just seems maybe like another domino is falling as we inch closer to the eventual reopening.

Maybe you're right, but again I ask why now and not prior to DTD reopening.

I take it as a sign that Disney has to keep some audio engineer busy during the shutdown and tossed them this bone.
And maybe you're right, but just seems the timing doesn't make sense at least to me.

But anyways who knows maybe its nothing, only time will tell.

B.O. Numbers aside, SotS is a very weak film that very few people today could even sit through. PatF is a solid movie that’s been embraced and much-loved via DVD and streaming by Disney’s target audience. The retheme makes sense for DL, and if done well (granted, that’s a big if), could actually make DL’s Splash a better ride.

Isn't "Turkey in the Straw" considered offensive now too? Maybe that's why "Steamboat Willie" was removed.
I assume they are going to try to do anything to prevent Steamboat Willie from coming under attack. So anything that can be thrown under the bus and sacrificed to lead attention away from it will be done.

I agree, I finally viewed SoTS a few years ago as an adult and found it very, very boring, though I do have fond memories of the soundtrack from watching the sing-along-songs and of course riding Splash.

Assuming that this redo is all but assured, there are few themes that I think would be a better fit for Disneyland than P&TF. My only concern is that this needs to be done right and not cheaply. I’m certainly glad they didn’t pick Zootopia or Tangled, for example.

It’s hard to keep track. General rule is has X exist over an extended period of time? If yes, X is likely to be deemed offensive to a select few because it has likely been applied inappropriately under today’s cultural lens. But I can say the dual crises of high unemployment and stigmatizing mental health doesn’t help in terms of curbing “cancel culture” in this country and (to a lesser extent) abroad. But that’s a topic for another thread.
