There's no Eartha Kitt, what is the point?View attachment 631573
Sharp rocks at the bottom? Most likely.
Pocahontas would be too controversial as many Native Americans found the movie offensive. And while I like the movie, I also think it takes itself too seriously to work well as a "fun" theme park ride. The Pocahontas segment of Fantastic feels a bit out of place for this reason. Can I just say that, while I'm still against the retheme, I would much rather have Splash Mountain be rethemed to The Princess and the Frog than something like Pocahontas or The Emperor's New Groove?
I think "found the movie" offensive comes off as too much of an "I'm sorry you feel that way." It's not about bring "offended." It's about how the false history and depictions of Native people, especially Native women have lasting real life consequences. It's not about "being offended."Pocahontas would be too controversial as many Native Americans found the movie offensive. The Emperor's New Groove is hilarious but lacks the timeless quality that PatF has. It's very funny but I think it lacks warmth. It also doesn't have any catchy songs.
I apologize if I made it sound like the criticisms were unwarranted and people were being oversensitive, that's not was I was going for at all. I believe there are valid concerns about Pocahontas. The real life Pocahontas (Matoaka) lived a tragic life and Native Americans were subsequently subjected to genocide, disease, the Trail of Tears, etc, and the movie has an extremely sanitized/whitewashed depiction of that history. It gives the false impression that everything turned out all right in the end for Native Americans when that obviously didn't happen. Pocahontas is also sexualized far more than any of the white Disney princesses, there are stereotypes about Native Americans being mystical (which further others them) and the song "Savages" wrongly equates the actions of Radcliffe and the English with that of the Native Americans (a problematic "see both sides are wrong!!" takeaway when white people were the invaders). In short, when I say Native Americans "found the movie offensive" I mean it in the same way that Black people were offended by the revisionist history and racist stereotypes of SotS. Having a fun flume ride based on a tragic historical figure would seem in poor taste, even if the movie heavily features water and has some good songs.I think "found the movie" offensive comes off as too much of an "I'm sorry you feel that way." Speaking only for Disneyland PaTF is the most thematically consistent IP for the area. Even Zootopia with its pop score (no offense to Shakira) really would not make sense as a long form musical flume attraction. An Emperor’s New Groove ride wouldn’t even thematically make sense in Critter Country. Pocahontas is a little more on point, but also, not really.
Oh, I have zero faith that I will personally find the end product to be acceptable. No faith or hope whatsoever. Disney has had way too many misses over the past few years, in my opinion.Speaking only for Disneyland PaTF is the most thematically consistent IP for the area. Even Zootopia with its pop score (no offense to Shakira) really would not make sense as a long form musical flume attraction.
I do/did think this has the potential to be a great refresh under the proper team and budget. That said, to say I’m concerned about how this will turn out under the current leadership is an understatement. The only film other that would kind of work is Robin Hood but it has a fair level of unfamiliarity with modern audiences.
Yes. This is exactly my reasoning.Pocahontas would be too controversial as many Native Americans found the movie offensive. And while I like the movie, I also think it takes itself too seriously to work well as a "fun" theme park ride.
While Disney clearly doesn't give a rat's tail about thematic consistency anymore, this is ALSO my thoughts. The Princess and the Frog is kind of stretching it too since there are so many human characters, but at least that movie does have animals that are major characters and most of it takes place in a bayou, so it's not too unfitting (especially with New Orleans Square nearby). An Emperor’s New Groove ride wouldn’t even thematically make sense in Critter Country. Pocahontas is a little more on point, but also, not really.
A Zootopia retheme of Splash Mountain would be awful, too. Imagine the finale being turned into a Shakira concert.Even Zootopia with its pop score (no offense to Shakira) really would not make sense as a long form musical flume attraction.

DON'T GIVE THEM ANY IDEASI think it’s easier to just keep the name as Critter Country. Changing the name creates more issues than it solves. Changing it would make the Canoes, Hungry Bear and Hundred Acre Woods/ Poohs placement illogical even if still harmonious with the atmosphere. The only thing changing the name does is help make sense of why there is a New Orleans themed attraction outside of NOS. To that I’d say it’s unnecessary and one can still view the land being in the country adjacent to NOS. These types of things didn’t have to be explained in the past. In addition, the only references to New Orleans are inside the show building making it even less pointless to change the name.
In short, the land doesn’t need a name change. It needs a, wait for it, backstory.
DON'T GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS
At least they had hired actual Native people and not people in red faceThe area used to be Indian Village
A friend and I were talking about it when we were in the parks last year. What if they have one involving Mama Odie's gumbo pot tipping over and enchanting the bayou and ends up creating a "swell" of magic or something.Haha I prefer a silly backstory in this case.
I physically cringed reading that.A friend and I were talking about it when we were in the parks last year. What if they have one involving Mama Odie's gumbo pot tipping over and enchanting the bayou and ends up creating a "swell" of magic or something.
Totally ridiculous and stupid, but on that same note it would be fitting for modern Disney....
Looking at you, Cosmic Rewind..
Imagine what I felt thinking it up.I physically cringed reading that.
