I'm listening to the press conference from LaGuardia right now... they are saying that there will be changes in security and maybe 30 percent of the usual number of flights will be flying--a "very limited" schedule...

The security measures will be stricter than they were during the Gulf War...passengers will need an extra hour to go through security... The general manager of LGA is saying not to expect to run through and catch a flight anymore...

He's on his way to a meeting with the airlines, and he said we'll know when airspace will open at 3pm.

I guess the scene is pretty tense at the Pentagon. About 10 minutes ago a policeman had gotten on the loud speaker telling everyone to move away from the area as quickey as possible and that there was an incoming plane. About 3 minutes later a voice from the loud speaker came back on and said it was a false alarm and the plane was a "friendly".

They are evacuating the Pentagon because they can't get the fires out.

The FAA just announced the airspace will be closed indefinitely....

U.N. pullout/Afghanistan attacks

Information provided by CNN.com:

Local U.N. staff have been paid their salaries and it was likely there would only be a skeleton staff of U.N. officials left in Kabul and other cities around the country.

Many other smaller non-government organizations and aid groups are also preparing to pull out of Afghanistan.

The U.N. relocation is expected to be completed by Thursday, a statement said.

Also on Wednesday, helicopter gunships operated by the Northern Alliance attacked Kabul's airport, firing missiles at targets.

The Northern Alliance have been involved in a long running civil war with the Taliban control about five percent of the country.

The Taliban says two airplanes and a workshop were damaged in the attacks.

Logan Security

I flew in and out of Logan airport in August, and must say it was the most chaotic airport I've ever seen, including Atlanta at Christmastime. When we arrived, people waiting to check in were lined up from the counter, through "crowd control" lines, and out into the street, making it difficult to get through. When we came back to leave, it was the same! We waited 2hr 15 mins to check our luggage...fortunately, we were almost 3 hours early. The clerks were telling people to check in at curbside(which also had huge crowds...that's why we walked by it), and were rushing people through security so they could make their flights. THIS WAS NOT AT A "BUSY" TIME! This was a Saturday 3 PM flight. I can imagine what it is like at 8AM on a weekday! Other people who fly in & out tell me my experience is typical. I can easily see how someone could get weapons through security there!

Freak, the FAA is only allowing those flights diverted yesterday to continue on the their intended destinations today, carrying only the original passengers. The airlines may move empty aircraft into position for tomorrow, but that will be the earliest for any airlines anywhere in the US.

Midway Airlines has closed its doors forever today, concerned that Americans will cut back on flying out of fear. They had filed for Chapter 11 reorganization.

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given
recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from
Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator. What follows is the full text of his
trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional
Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the
Americans as the most generous and possibly the least
appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and
Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the
Americans who poured in billions of dollars and
forgave other billions in debts. None of these
countries is today paying even the interest on its
remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956,
it was the Americans who propped it up, and their
reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets
of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the
United States that hurries in to help. This spring,
59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes.
Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped
billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now
newspapers in those countries are writing about the
decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that
is gloating over the erosion of the United States
dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country
in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo
Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?
If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the
International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting
a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese
technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German
technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about
American technocracy and you find men on the moon
- not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs
right in the store window for everybody to look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded.
They are here on our streets and most of them, unless
they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American
dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India
were breaking down through age, it was the Americans
who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and
the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an
old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced
to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name
me even one time when someone else raced to the
Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside
help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone and I'm one
Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get
kicked around. They will come out of this thing with
their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled
to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating
over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one
of those."

Stand proud, America!

I also hear that Midway Airport in Chicago has gone belly up. They were in financial trouble already with their expansion and with the canceled flights they lost way too much. Mayor Daily has also been trying to get a third airport in the Chicagoland area for years. People beware of even more delays out of O'Hare airport which is already one of the top three bussiest in the world.

Sorry, false report on Midway Airport. It was only Midway Airlines.

Confirmed from Port Authority police:

3 Arab men got into an altercation with a crew at JFK on a flight to California at about 9 am--the crew called the police when the men refused to leave the aircraft. The men fled when the police came running to the plane--those men have vanished. It was a United airlines flight. It is under investigation.

Thanks Tramp. If I ever had to go to combat, I would be proud to serve under your command.

Here's to the red of it -
There's not a thread of it,
No, nor a shred of it
In all the spread of it
From foot to head.
But heroes bled for it,
Faced steel and lead for it,
Precious blood shed for it,
Bathing it red!

Here's to the white of it -
Thrilled by the sight of it.
Who knows the right of it,
But feels the might of it
Through day and night?
Womanhood's care for it
Made manhood dare for it.
Purity's prayer for it
Keeps it so white.

Here's to the blue of it -
Beauteous view of it,
Heavenly hue of it,
Star-spangled dew of it
Constant and true.
Diadems gleam for it,
States stand supreme for it,
Liberty's beam for it
Brightens the blue!

Here's to the whole of it -
Stars, stripes and pole of it.
Body and soul of it,
O, and the roll of it,
Sun shining through.
Hearts in accord for it,
Thanking the Lord for it,
Red, White and Blue!
