They ruined DL's Small World how much longer before they ruin ours?

I happen to agree with the statement made. Clearly Disney is already trying to make money off of this rehab, which I seriously doubt if they didn't add these characters.

It's quite obvious. I also stand by my statement that it is a Synergy move. Walt didn't add Mickey Mouse to all sections of Disneyland, or characters where they didn't belong. Everything had a place and the original theme would stay prevalent throughout, even if changes were made.

Adding characters as an excuse that this is an "imaginative" effort for updating the way Walt would have wanted is really underestimating the intelligence of people. But that's the way Disney operates these days. Add characters, the general public doesn't care.

Put Stitch in the Hall of Presidents or Goofy in the Haunted Mansion next, why not?

The only constant in the universe is change. Like it or don't like it, it's created a buzz. I've seen the pics and hopefully we'll be seeing it first hand in a couple weeks. It's not what i was expecting and I think it's cute.

Well that's the problem. The kids will ride looking for the characters. The message of unity and world peace will be completley lost on future generations.

Yea, cuz I'm sure kids were riding IASW saying, "I really enjoy this ride's message of world unity."

No kids like the ride because of the song and the cute dolls.

I don't know what Walt would have done but I know that he respected Mary Blair too much to put his own charactres in her attraction.

Her attraction?

Check out this picture of the ride at the World's Fair. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/31/91607744_187815faed.jpg?v=0

The marquee there does not say;

PEPSI-COLA
presents MARY BLAIR'S
it's a small world

The marquee says;

PEPSI-COLA
presents WALT DISNEY'S
it's a small world

Mary Blair created the interior set design. Alice Davis researched and created all the dolls costumes. Rolly Crump created the tower marquee out front. Richard and Robert Sherman composed and wrote the iconic theme song. Pepsi-Cola paid for the entire thing. Joan Crawford was the celebrity spokeswoman for the attraction and often helped serve Pepsi in the post-show refreshment garden.

But it was still Walt Disney's attraction. :D

^ underestimating Mary's influence on ALL areas of the attractions design is a gross understatement. No kidding it took more than one person to make but saying it does not reflect her overall vision or aesthetic design is outrageous. No kidding it says Walt Disney's not Mary Blair's out front. Who the hell is Mary Blair? Walt was/is a person people knew/know about. There is a reaosn the Blair family in particular took offense to the idea of adding characters.

Or not.....
I completely disagree. No average guest gives a rat's about any message that may or may not exist in that ride. It's a bunch of dolls, representing the countries of the world, all singing a repetitive, almost hypnotic song.:snore:

This is the most positive thing that could happen to that ride. Now it might be interesting for a demographic above toddler. Maybe.

You talk like a 50 year old trying to sound hip and edgy

"Yea man It's a small world is soooo SQUARE! but now that there are disney charecters in my face its totally COOL dude!"

You should be right at home on a Space Mountain jampacked with Stitch\

and if you don't want messages in your "kids rides" stop coming to WDW. Go watch redneck TV or go to six flags.

Any change in this ride has to be an improvement, nothing could make it worse or ruin it totally. Yes, I am not a big fan. However I have to ride it because it is there.

Wow. Harsh. Is that really necessary? I sure don't see the need to go on the attack just because we disagree about small world. I definately don't take it that seriously, and don't appreciate the tone of your statements to me.

Stitch in SM? Apples and oranges, but no...I wouldn't like it, and have gone on record saying as much.

Name another kid's ride with a message. I can't think of one. Little kids neither understand nor care about any message that might be there.
And how exactly does my dislike for messages in rides exclude me from enjoying WDW, or specifically the MK? Again.... there aren't any messages there.

Ok, it's official.
After watching the new videos and checking out Miceage's photos, I have formed an opinion about the Small World change.

It reeks of AWESOME!
I totally dig it.
Seriously, bring it to MK asap.

I walked past the MK one today and was compelled to throw a verbal jab it's way, "Yeah, now you're even more boring! Hurry up and get yourself some characters you lazy ride, you! Why can't you be more like your big brother?"
Nailed it again Lee.
Stupid Haters.

sorry I wrote that in a hurry I didnt mean to sound harsh. From the vids it doesn't look too bad I just have a few complaints (in-your-face jesse and woody and an annoying voice on ariel). Hong Kong's version looks nicer though (better lighting, set quality, charecters arent as in your face) I wish they would have gutted it and rebuilt it to be just like HK Disneyland's instead of going the lazy route.

I do strong disagree that rides shouldn't contain postivie messages that promote world peace, or in the case of Epcot Center exploring science and technology. People (kids AND adults) need inspiration in this world desperatly or we are never going to progress. Walt Disney wanted to inspire people and he did to an extant. Now adays it's difficult to find people like that so that in the future we can actually have space travel, gene therapy, better medical care, etc. It all starts from inspiration and its important that Disney does it even in a subtle way.

I just get upset when people say there should be no messages or inspiring elements in Disney attractions and that they should just be "mindless entertainment" (which has its place but I firmly believe the Disney parks should offer both).

I'm still not seeing how characters are supposed to prevent kids from absorbing the ride's message. That criticism seems to really underestimate their intelligence, as if walking AND chewing gum is a little too advanced for them.

Also, the more I think about it, the ride has always had an element of pointing out the more interesting or animated dolls along the way. "Look at the hyenas! There's the girl with her ducks! etc." Pointing out Cinderella doesn't seem too different from the way I think a lot of people already approach the ride.

Yea its nowhere near as tacky as it could have been and it actually looks decent. The big critcism is that this is an extremly blatant attempt to sell more cartoon merchandise as opposed to improving the quality of the show for guests and it adds more cartoon tie-ins in a park that has far too many already.

The only other issues with the Disneyland version are:

- Why didn't they do the complete gut and redo so it looks exactly like Hong Kong's which is very nice
-The America scene was really unnecessary as are the big and inyourface woody figures
-some AA's were replaced with static figures. Some AA's like a whole set of geese were removed altogheter to cut costs.
- Ariels singing voice JESUS

Other than that its a nice freshining up.
