ORLANDO (Orlando Sentinel) -- A greeter at Universal Studio's Spiderman ride accused of molesting a 4-year-old guest at the amusement park was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a plea deal Thursday.

In addition to the prison sentence, Circuit Judge Frederick J. Lauten gave the former Universal employee, Tanner K. Larson, 10 years of $ex-offender probation.

Larson, 23, originally was charged with $exual battery of a child and lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under age 12.

In a deal reached between the State Attorney's Office and Larson's lawyer, Marc Lubet, the molestation charge was dismissed and the other charge changed to attempted capital $exual battery. Larson pleaded no contest to the new charge.

A conviction on that charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years, but both sides agreed to a 10-year sentence.

Last April, Larson was working at the theme park when a family from New York asked him to find a bathroom for the 4-year-old girl. He took the child to a men's employee bathroom. When the girl came out, she appeared upset and later told her family Larson had touched her inappropriately with his finger, according to the prosecution.

Larson later said he had been abused as a child. Universal Studios fired him immediately, Lubet said.

The popular Spiderman ride is at the park's Islands of Adventure.

In court Thursday, Larson told the judge, "I do feel sorry for any damage I may have done."

Assistant State Attorney William Brown said the child's family agreed with the plea deal. They wanted to spare the girl from going through the court process and being asked to recall the ordeal.

Lubet said his client wanted to avoid a trial on the initial charges, which could have resulted in a life sentence. "I think it was a very fair resolution, under all the circumstances," Lubet said.

Makes you wonder why a member of the childs family didnt accompany their child with the cast member to the bathroom - I'm not saying that the family are guilty of neglect but it would have prevented the incident from happening.
Do any of the theme parks run pre employment checks on potential staff with regards to a sexual offenders register ??

Yeah--you hate to blame the victim, but there is no WAY I would let my 4 year old go to the bathroom alone, or with anyone other than a family member.

Before anyone says that "this couldn't happen at Disney," remember that NOTHING could have prevented this, short of the family bothering to look after their child better. This completely happened spontaneously, and nothing on the part of Disney, Universal, or even Six Flags could have prevented it.

It is definitely a good thing that cooler heads prevailed in the court room so that it would not escalate into something more traumatizing for the family.

Since it happened at Universal, I don't think this shocking news would flood the media since the Universal name alone is less delicate than Disney's.

Sorry for the double post. I meant to edit, but I replied. LOL.

At least it looks like USA has the right idea for people like this. 10 years and that with a plea bargain!

In the UK, he would probably have got 2 years max.

Hey MKT Thanks as always for the scoop!!! And I have to agree with all on here. Why on God's green earth would you allow your 4 year old to go off unsupervised by a family member anywhere??? What was the family thinking??? I cant understand this at all. Belle

Do we share halves of a brain belle? I was thinking the same thing. I would NEVER, even in Disney, allow someone else to take my child like that. I just wouldn't. Not even Mickey himself would be able to. I remember one year when I was very young and with my parents that the entrances/exits to Disney was shut right down. Noone in or out because there was a lost/stolen child. Even as a child I thought, where were the parents that this child was allowed to wander off? Granted, I don't like seeing parents walking around with their kids un leashes, but I can see their reasoning. We have never had a problem though. I do remember going into the Florida Mall when my kids were little and the security guard telling us to hang on to the boys' hands and not to let them out of our sight because blonde and blue eyed were the most commonly abducted there. He said they can have them changed closewise hairwise and complection wise in less then 3 minutes. Freaked me out.

Honestly, why would parents let a MALE CM bring their 4 year old DAUGHTER to a restroom? I can't imagine letting a female take my daughter, nevermind a male. This doesn't excuse the CMs behavior in any way; I just wish more parents would use their common sense once in a while!!

I agree with you Mom. This makes no sense to me. Some people are either too trusting of others or too lazy to take their child to the restroom themselves. My oldest son is 9 and I will not let him go into a men's room alone. If my husband is not with us, I take him in the women's. We had an incident here in Ohio where a 10 year old boy went into a men's room in a Cracker Barrel restaurant alone. While in there, he was molested. The crime was stopped when another man came in and heard the boy crying.

I wish more public places would provide family restrooms because it's just not safe anymore for kids (especially boys) to go in a restroom alone.

Huh? I am not talking about disney. I'd never heard of a thing like that in Disney ever. It was a security guard at the Florida Mall almost 11 years ago that told us that about the mall. Not about DIsney.I would say. My mom was still alive then. So it had to be at least 10 years ago. The security guard to make this post clear as well as the last, he was talking about in the Mall not in Disney. My point was I'd never heard of problems in DIsney. The only problem we'd ever encountered was a warning by a security guard at the Florida Mall about the Florida Mall.

I'm like that also with my boys. I never let them alone in the bathrooms. My hubby has to go with them. Now that they are 12 and 13 they can go but they must go together and they know they have the 60 second rule. If they aren't out together by the time I count to 60, I'm coming in after them. Which this reminds me....I went after my boys in a restroom in Florida. Stevie B's we went for dinner and they had to go to the bathroom they went in and I was waiting and waiting and thought what is going on. I knocked on the door and said Mom coming in and opened the door. There my boys were playing with the hand dryers. These hand dryers are so strong they push the skin back and they thought that was so cool. Somewhere in Disney they found the same dryers with my hubby and they played in tht bathroom blowing up there cheeks etc for a good ten minutes. Everytime they had to go potty the entire trip they looked for those dryers and were disappointed in every bathroom that didn't have them. Mind you, thanks to Stevie B's, they checked out every bathroom in Disney. My hubby was so not thrilled with the bathrooms being the "best thing".

LMAO   Your husband got in on the action too? If he did, that makes your story all the funnier because I can just imagine two boys and a grown man getting excited over hand dryers
