The World's Most Magical Celebration - Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary

It's fair. I just think there might be better usage of your time (and maybe mine as well).

The negative crowd here and elsewhere has me wanting to go off the grid.
Many have certainly noticed this trend. So called social media enterprises (hate that name) appear to be contributing factor. There was recently a Wall Street Journal article on the subject, though I haven't read that specific article. (Just heard reporting on it from other sources, but it was widely reported).

Regarding this forum, I agree a some posters are a bit over-the-top at times, but IMO that goes both ways. (Personally, I think Trauma has given some nuanced opinions in this thread.) Some forum members are SO negative about WDW, that I really wonder why they post to this forum. After reading them for a while, I have often found that many of the really negative forum members rarely visit WDW. They post here many times a day, but they haven't been to WDW since 2015. SO partly they are legitimately angry they can't afford to visit WDW, and partly they are projecting.

Conversely, some forum members also fall into the WDW can-do-no-wrong tribal thinking. Simply, WDW's 50th celebration could have been better. Yet say that, and some forum members quickly interpret such a statement as a personal attack that needs defending, as though they themselves have personally been attacked.

************************************
One more very important factor of social interaction is that we often don't consider how much of our in-person communication is non-verbal. In-person, we moderate our tone, facial expressions, and quickly make corrections when necessary. Online, that isn't possible. Tone is hard to convey.

An acquaintance of mine had this problem. In person, she's very petite, and generally speaks softly in a very feminine tone. In person, she just doesn't (generally) sound angry. Her emails though....Phew! I daresay, she likely adopted such a mismatched style because soft words coming from a soft voice = people ignored her.

I haven't seen anyone say that the 50th couldn't have been better. I've said it before - there's a whole lot of things they should have done better.

They sell them during the kite show. On discount.
About this kite show….

Can this thing last with all the abuse the kites are taking? I keep seeing them crash into things.

I applaud the attempt to get some new entertainment but I honestly wonder if the show can stay in one piece for an extended period of time?

They can easily replace the kites as needed. With tuppence for paper and string, you can have your own set of wings.

I understand the issue thus far has been the jet ski guys not keeping their fists holding tight to the strings of their kites.

Amateurs.

Best friends 2 year old also regularly wears a mask with no issue.

Regardless, there are enough parents who don't want their kids in masks and enough parents who are waiting for the vaccine for their kids to significantly impact a family destination - agree on that?
I saw plenty of 2 year olds wearing masks with no problems at WDW last week. Their attitude about it is entirely dependent on their parents attitude about masks.

Hey, I tried to get a food conversation going, no takers! 😂
I was pleasantly surprised with my food for my trip last month. Every single meal was what I would consider passable, and most I would consider excellent.

This was also my first trip where we didn’t have quick service even once. We cooked a large breakfast in the room every morning and would come back to the room for lunch if we where hungry.

My next trip is over New Years and I’m already having dread about trying to secure dining reservations. If we can’t get into our first choices we will be flexible.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews about the atmosphere of Space 220 anyone here get to experience the food yet?

That’s not always true. Seems like it should be, and I’m sure it’s true for many, but there are many parents who struggle with getting their very young children to wear masks regardless of the parents’ attitude toward masks.

This is literally a fantastic thing. As guests, we should WANT high-performing managers to get kudos from their bosses and under-performing areas to get corrective attention.
Because it creates an enviroment of driving by metrics instead of a organization of PEOPLE!

You've conveniently glossed over all the human factors and how Disney is setting themselves up to take credit for whatever they please instead of actually identifying the actual spot the rubber meets the road.

Which happens at just about every job, everywhere!
There is no glory for the grunt workers. (I am one. My boss gets bonuses based on the work i do)

But besides all that (or because of all that)- I agree, there should be a way to call out a specific cast member.

So I just finished walking through Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream and realized, except for the ABC special, where are the recognitions and tributes to Walt. Sure the Bob’s gave lip service to him Thursday night but that’s it.

Couldn’t space have been set aside in MS, even temporarily, showing WDW over the last 50 years? Start off with Florida project history then other exhibits showing opening of SpaM, River Country, Epcot, HS and finally AK. Then random photos over the years.

If they couldn’t do that, at least spruce up the HS exhibit. No recognition of the 50th there at all. At the back is empty space for an exhibit which looks like it might be for the cruise line. They couldn’t bring back the large poster of Walt pointing at Central Florida for his future project?

I’m really not trying to be negativist but this was a lost opportunity recognizing Walt and the last 50 years. Plenty has already been opined on what was actually done so I’ll stop there.

Managers SHOULD be driven by metrics.

HQ directs their managers by metrics, then it's the managers' jobs to direct their staff.

The problem with the old system is that it was only set up to receive praise. This makes it much easier to source *negative* feedback as well, which leads to corrective action.

You live and breathe as an analyst instead of actual leader.

Metrics are tools - you gotta be able to recognize when you stop using that tool to actually achieve the goal instead of focusing on the metric alone.

Dumbing down a system to remove the granularity that allows you to actually CONNECT the message to the execution only serves to prevent recognition, not improve your insights. Nevermind the actual personal relations issues it causes.
