I do the same thing for any road course. I still pass parts of Birmingham or others places and say, "At that very place, I remember thinking (this)"

Ill never walk over the bridge going from the Boardwalk area to the Yacht club without thinking about the woman that (I assume due to a few reasons) had to have been running the second half relay part of the Inaugural W&D pull up on the other side of the bridge on the right and hurl about a gallon on Powerade. Right in front of me. So glad I was 2 seconds behind her and not next to her.

I feel the same way every time I drive over the Verrazzano Bridge ever since the NYC Marathon. In fact, my kids refer to it as "Mommy's bridge"! lol Gosh does it brings back memories from the first 2 miles of the marathon to be on that bridge.

So sadly I think I'm going to be withdrawing from the race :( We have not kept up on our training the way we should and are still running 60 seconds, walking 90 seconds and have yet to break 2 miles and at 1.97 miles (our longest yet) we're very winded. My training partner is not taking it seriously. She feels we can just get there and make 10 miles happen. I told her it's not that easy. So I think it's best we just step out now. It stinks but what can ya do?

Just trying to be encouraging. Don't give up hope yet. Jeff Galloway's beginner program has you run/walk no more than 30/30 and completing the race on time. I bet you could still get in gear and ready by September 29th. It is still 3 months away. I have been slacking due to work and heat but am going to get my butt into gear and not miss another training run so if I can get back on track I'm sure you can. Have you tried adjusting your run walk to help? I'm doing about 2.5 to 3 miles during my short runs during the week and this weekend am going to try and get up to 4 miles. I use a 15/45 pace right now due to my asthma kicking it at anything faster at the moment (Dr. says that will improve with training my asthma goes hand in hand with fatigue and is not really not crippling asthma as he put it). If you already booked everything I say try to get back on track and see what reducing your run/walk ratio does to your runs.

Which training plan are you using if you don't mind me asking?

We actually are doing the couch to 5k program. We began it back in ohhh, February so we could then move onto a 10k training or the actual Tower of Terror training but clearly we have not made much progress. If we do this race, I want to be able to run the majority of it. I have also done 30 second run, 60 second walk but we did pretty good with that so we moved on the next week on the schedule to 60/90. I just feel like if I am not going to be able to finish, I want to give someone who can finish a chance to do it. I think if I had stuck with my original training plan and ran when I was supposed to I'd be at a good place right now but I slacked off (partly my own fault and partly due to work, family commitments, traveling, etc)

Aw well that makes sense. Hope you won't give up on running. This is my first time ever training for something and I have settled with fact that this is my first race and there is no need to push myself to be a "runner" per se but I want to be able to finish and get the medal. Maybe by the August I will be up past 15/45 or 20/40. I did the 30/60 with C25K and found that if I don't have the C25K program I get lost in tracking. When I stay with just minute intervals it is easier to keep track of on just a stop watch or at the gym.

Hopefully you can do another race soon.

Bowing out? Really? It's ten miles. That's not really fair for me to say...granted, i'm an ultra guy, and I'm just warming up at 26 miles in a 100 mile race. But seriously, at any distance, you just have to put in the work, that's all. I don't believe in training programs, just hard a-- work. Get back to training and kill that 10 miles.

No No no....You gotta want it. No excuses. Walk on lunch break, walk at midnight... you gotta want and earn this medal.

You still have plenty of time to reach this goal. You gotta find time to make this happen. Keyword in that... make this happen. I dont want to miss time from my family, so I run before anyone gets up and work. The running Gods threw me a curve ball this february and I fought back from not even being able to walk February 15th, to self rehab for a month, to walking, then run/walking... to now running again. Took me 4 months. I lost everything. I want that ToT medal.

If you want it... you can do it. Dont rely on other people or partners. They will always fail you. Running is an individual sport. We are all here for encouragement... so that is why Im pushing you.

I wish I could 'like' Joel's post multiple times. Well said buddy. Sacrifice, and don't care what the clock says, you decide what time it is. Logging my 165 mile training runs in 5-6 days isn't cupcakes and gum drops.

Thank you for this. This inspired me VERY MUCH. On that note, I am going running right when I get home from work!

Good!

We are here to motivate and encourage and give high fives when you do well. If you give 100% and fail, we will slap you on the butt and tell you to get'em next time.

In February, I could run 20-30 miles on any given Saturday. It was routine to do a 15-20 miler on Saturdays. 30-40 miles a week. After my last full, as I stated above, I injured my knee going for a goal. I got my goal, but paid the price. 1 month of no running, then it was hobbling, then no running again, the started over. 4 months of questions if I was going to be able to do it again. It is all about what you want to do and what your goals are. Nick ran/runs multiple times my distance... but we both share one thing, we have a goal, we reach it.

Lastly, I signed up for the ToT when I couldnt even run. I knew Id finish, even if I had to walk. You owe it to yourself to do it at least once. It will be one of the best experiences of your life.

That is great news that you are going to press on. In the words of some famous people, "Baby steps" (Bill Murray, What About Bob) and "Do your best and forget the rest" (Tony Horton / P90X).

Take your time. You know your body. And although you have / had a friend running with you, running is an individual sport. It's all about you. It's you against your mind, your body, and the clock. Don't let "time" get in the way. Do your best, bill up stamina, and press on.

Jeff Galloway has an 18-week training program for beginner runners, like you, to get you prepared for the end of September. Here's the link to the PDF.

Here's other useful information for you from Jeff.

I am in no way a distance runner, but I have run in mainly 1.5 mile fitness certification races for the military and 5K races. But since Memorial Day week I followed Jeff's running program and Friday afternoon I ran nearly 3.75 miles in 30 minutes. A few weeks ago I ran just about 3 miles in 30 minutes and at the beginning I could not hit 3 miles in 30 minutes. I'm now staring down a 5-mile run this weekend, which I have never done, but looking forward to. Hey, that's 5 miles closer to 10 miles.

Best of luck, and in the words of Dorry, "Just keep swimming," or in our case ... "Just keep running." Pace yourself and most importantly have fun.

Excellent! Remember in your training, the point is to have fun and finish. This is a Disney race! I did my first Disney half with a 2:1 run/walk and wasn't even close to being swept. You only need to train for a 15-minute pace so you can plan for a few pictures if you want. You will see a lot of walking at Disney races.

I am thinking of doing this race as a character. I wonder how difficult it would be to make not only this costume, but the ash skin and blue hair?

Thank you everyone for such inspiring thoughts! I did go home and run on Friday... well, it was more like a run/walk for a little bit then walked the rest of the way because it was HOT out but at least I did it! Planning on getting back onto the M W F running schedule this week!!

Good job. Getting out the door is the hardest thing to do. Don't bow out. Having that goal of the ToT race, that will help the motivation. Knowing that you registered, paid however much money, to not even try? Meh. DFL >>> DNS > DNRegister
Look at pictures of the past bling. Think of the pride you will have by knowing that you were able to finish on your own. No team to help hide any shortcomings, but tons of support (from complete strangers) to keep going and finish as you are. Whatever it takes, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. (And soon you'll be walking out that door ooor oor!)

Training partners, running clubs, even online forums, are all supposed to help support you and motivate you to reach your goals. Sometimes you need to try a different group to find your fit. Plenty of people on here will help provide motivation and encouragement, just keep with it.

I was thinking of dressing up like the Nanny in the elevator scene. Yep, drag. LOL. However, once I started researching her outfit with some of the extras, Im not sure it would be smart to run in a polyester business suit. The heat and humidity might be a little too much.

Yeah Joel, I just don't see anyone carrying a suitcase for 10 miles but if you do, I will be duly impressed. I don't know about Hades, but ever since he made an appearance at a marathon in 2008 or before, I've tried without success to find him out on the trail. Figure if Disney won't bring him back, even for a villains race like Tower of Terror, maybe I can.

But I probably won't. ha ha

See, I would carry that small suitcase 10 miles just to prove Im dumb enough to do it... in a woman's polyester business suit (sans pump shoes). I would probably take a vintage suitcase, cut off the 2 sides, combine those and make it lighter.

I remember seeing him by the BAH back for one of the Marathons. And I am pretty sure he was out for the 2nd ToT 13k race. Where added characters to the race and had 4 villains at like mile 8. In the dark. But I think he was one of them. I vaguely remember Frollo as well.

Oh Please! Oh Please! Hades is on my list of HAVE TO SEE characters for the race. I love him, and Dr. Facilier. I would also love to see Prince John. I have a picture of me and him(sucking our thumbs, of course) from 20 years ago so I would like an updated picture.
