How did everyone's first day go if they are using Jeff Galloway's training program?
I think I did ok. I went just a little under 3 miles in the 30 minute run. I adjusted runkeeper so I won't track warm ups and cool downs any more so I can be a little more accurate in how far I go and my average pace. This was my first time out in a while and I stumbled and fell since I've never done city running before so I learned a valuable lesson. Next time I'll just run on the bike path that goes down the east river.
I did not start last week like the training guide said. Instead for the past 2 weeks I ran like 10-11 miles over the course of 15 days with my military buddies while I was on 2 training assignments. Each time out ran 2 miles, most of it on a track and 2 runs on a park trail. Memorial Day week did not run until Sunday, so I think the 10-11 miles made up for what I should have done the past week.
Sunday night went on a midnight run around the neighborhood block. For the past year and a half have been running around the local high school track but last night decided since I am training for a long-distance road race what better way then to run on sidewalks and abandoned city streets (I was well reflected and fully aware of whatever traffic there was).
Out and back is just about 2 miles, and the out and back is right next to one of the city's main drags, which is easily a mile from street light to street light.
I only ran for 30 minutes, just to get a feel. I listened to one of my mixes and knew when it hit 30 minutes, and I was surprised that I hit 3.25 miles at 30 minutes. Since February I have been running about 2 miles or 1.5 miles each outing, and for the past 2 weeks have been running to get my breathing and pace down.
I was quite impressed. I was amazed how far my body can run without feeling drained. Walked the rest of the way home and felt refreshed, not tired, not spent, and breathed normally. Clear skies, about 65 F with a slight wind.
Tuesday and Thursday will likely duplicate the 30-minute runs and Saturday or Sunday June 9-10 will increase it to 4 miles as per the guide.
Never ran further than an 8K. I've mainly run 5Ks, and with never running a 10-mile race before just guesstimated at my ToT time of around 1 hour, 40 minutes for the registration. After Sunday night's 30-minute run of a little over a 5K, I believe I can finish the 10-miler in about 90 minutes. Time and training will tell.
Look out Tower of Terror 10 miler. You might be a tower but not a terror. You are easily attainable.
